Bari Weiss: CBS News Not ‘Producing a Product That Enough People Want’

1

CBS News Editor-in-Chief Bari Weiss has unveiled her vision for the company in a town hall meeting with staffers on Tuesday.

During the event, she shared that she believes her role needs to include shifting the network’s mindset to more digital aspects.

“I am here to make CBS News fit for purpose in the 21st Century,” she said. “Our industry has changed more in the last decade that in the last 150 years, and the transformation isn’t over yet. Far from it. It’s almost impossible to conceive of how fast things will move from here.”

Weiss aadded by stating that honesty will be the best policy going forward. And admitting that it hasn’t lived up to its end of the bargain by producing enough credible news, in her view.

“We have to start by looking honestly at ourselves. We are not producing a product that enough people want,” she said. Weiss added that “We can blame demographics, or technology, or fractured attention spans, or ‘news avoidance,’ but these are all copes.”

She continued by stating that the falling trust in mainstream media is partly to blame. But she believes that legacy media organizations haven’t done a good enough job adapting to the current landscape.

“We are not doing enough to meet audiences where they are, so they are leaving us,” said Weiss. “They are not tuning out, far from it. In fact, Americans spend twice as much time consuming news today as they did 50 years ago. They are going to the vast universe of podcasts, and YouTube, and Twitch, and newsletters and, yes, sometimes to our nimbler competitors.”

An increased focus on “scoops” will be enacted under Weiss’ tutelage, she shared. “This is where we can soar, and where we’ll be investing,” she concluded.

Ground Zero with Clyde Lewis to Exit National Syndication

16

After the hospitalization and recovery of its host, Ground Zero with Clyde Lewis will conclude its run in national syndication at the end of the week.

Currently distributed by Talk Media Network, the show that originally launched more than 30 years will no longer be available after Friday’s broadcast.

Recently, Clyde Lewis has been hospitalized and placed in a nursing facility following a kidney failure diagnosis. While he is on the mend, the show noted in a post on social media that it has lost several affiliates.

“We will no longer be on syndicated terrestrial radio after the end of this month,” a social media post for the show reads. “Clyde is scheduled to be out of the nursing facility mid-February and will resume hosting Ground Zero. Thank you so much for your ongoing support as we go through these drastic but needed changes with the show.”

The new version of the show will be a digital-based endeavor. The program also noted that it has not received any advertising revenue from being based at AM 860 The Answer in Portland, and is paying to rent the studio space at the station in order to produce the show.

Ground Zero with Clyde Lewis is currently heard on several stations, including 840 WHAS in Louisville, 580 KIDO in Boise, and 98.9 WORD in Greenville, among others.

Tony Romo: Outside Criticism of CBS Sports Broadcasts Is Part of the Job

0

Tony Romo has heard the noise that comes with being one of the most visible analysts in sports television. He just refuses to let it define how he approaches his job. Appearing Tuesday on The Pat McAfee Show, Romo offered a candid look at how he processes criticism surrounding his work on CBS Sports, while also explaining the philosophy that shapes his approach in the broadcast booth.

Romo acknowledged that scrutiny is unavoidable in a role that places him front and center during the NFL’s biggest games. However, he said the key is maintaining perspective and staying true to the instincts that helped him land the job in the first place.

“You’re doing you,” Romo said. “You’ve got to be yourself and everything. You’re trying your best. You’re never not trying your hardest to go be great at something. But then you look at it, the noise is the noise. It’s part of being in this job.”

That mindset extends to the online criticism that often follows high-profile broadcasts. The former Dallas Cowboys quarterback has been no stranger to criticism over performance during his career on the field and off it.

Romo explained that while social media commentary exists, it rarely aligns with the feedback he receives in real life, where fans consistently express appreciation for the NFL on CBS team.

“All the fans come up to me and say how much they love us,” Romo said. “That’s what I feel. As far as looking at stuff online, it’s just part of the process. I don’t think it really changes things. They’re watching you.”

Rather than adjusting his delivery to appease critics, Romo said he focuses on authenticity and preparation. He believes his instincts, enthusiasm, and willingness to react naturally to the game are what set him apart when he transitioned from quarterback to broadcaster.

“You have to be yourself and just go with it,” Romo said. “I got to this position because of that.”

Romo also discussed how his playing background influences the way he talks about certain players during a broadcast. He admitted he often gravitates toward certain athletes, particularly those whose passion and commitment stand out on and off the field.

“I want the game built up,” Romo said. “I want certain players, the guys who care deeply. I want you to give everything you have and literally care that much.”

That approach, Romo added, comes from respect rather than favoritism. Having played at the highest level, he understands how demanding the NFL can be and believes effort deserves recognition when it consistently shows up on Sundays.

“You root for those guys,” Romo said. “Not everyone gives every ounce of themselves. So many players do, but not all of them.”

As Romo continues to occupy one of the most scrutinized roles in sports media, his message remained simple. The criticism will always exist, but his responsibility is to the game, the audience, and staying true to the style that earned him a seat in the booth.

NFL Lifts Reported Ban on Dave Portnoy Attending Super Bowl

0

Barstool Sports founder Dave Portnoy will be allowed to attend the Super Bowl in Santa Clara. The decision ends a years-long rift that previously kept the outspoken media personality from the NFL’s marquee event.

An NFL spokesperson confirmed to Front Office Sports that Portnoy is permitted to purchase a ticket for the game that features the New England Patriots and Seattle Seahawks. The change in status was first reported by TMZ.

The apparent unbanning closes a chapter that began during Super Bowl week in 2019. That year, Portnoy, a vocal New England Patriots supporter, was removed from Super Bowl LIII in Atlanta during the Patriots’ matchup with the Los Angeles Rams. Video of the incident circulated widely after Portnoy mockingly went limp, mimicking what he later described as a “dead fish,” while being escorted out.

Portnoy’s 2019 ejection stemmed from events earlier that week. He had falsified a media credential to attend a Super Bowl-related function. Authorities charged him with criminal trespass following the incident. The episode was not isolated.

In 2017, longtime Barstool podcaster PFT Commenter also falsified a media badge in Houston. The incident followed the outlet being denied credentials. It further strained relations between the digital media brand and the league.

Tensions between Portnoy, Barstool Sports and NFL commissioner Roger Goodell stretch back even further. In 2015, following Tom Brady’s suspension in the Deflategate scandal, Portnoy and several Barstool employees protested outside NFL headquarters in New York. Portnoy later escalated the feud by distributing merchandise that depicted Goodell as a clown with a bright red nose.

The company has strengthened its ties to the league’s broader media ecosystem through a partnership with Netflix and FOX Sports. Portnoy’s personal relationship with Patriots owner Robert Kraft has also remained intact. Now, with the Super Bowl door reopened, one of sports media’s most polarizing figures appears poised to reenter the NFL’s biggest stage as a fan.

Former Daily Wire CEO Jeremy Boreing: Candace Owens ‘Most Talented Person in Conservative Media’ But I Regret Hiring Her

0

Candace Owens has long been a controversial figure, going back to her time at The Daily Wire. The company’s former CEO, Jeremy Boreing, admits he regrets hiring her.

In an interview with Deadline, marking the first time he’s spoken publicly since departing the organization he co-founded with Ben Shapiro, Boreing was asked what his greatest regret was during his time leading the company.

“Well, I did hire Candace Owens, so I probably owe some penance for that,” Boreing said.

He later added that the relationship between Owens and The Daily Wire — and Ben Shapiro — soured strongly and continues to get worse, saying it “seems to get more and more toxic all the time.

“Candace is, I think, probably, the most talented person operating in conservative media,” Boreing said. “She’s one of the most talented people I’ve ever met in any media, and she has enormous charisma, enormous charm.

“But she’s sort of like a nuclear energy,” Boreing continued. “If she’s harnessed, she can power a city. If she’s unharnessed, she can level it. When she uses those powers for good, I think she’s enormously effective. I don’t think that she is using them for good now. I had misgivings from the very beginning, and I didn’t trust my misgivings.”

Boreing, who exited The Daily Wire last March, added that he’d be interested in launching a new media company in the future.

“I’m exploring exactly where I think I can make the most impact … I want to continue to have a voice in the cultural and political issues of our time, both directly and through art, and over time, I’ll build whatever mechanisms are necessary to effectuate that. I’ll be producing podcasts and movies in the not too distant future, but it won’t only be single project producing. There will likely be a company to act as a vehicle for my passions.”

Stu Burguiere to Depart The Glenn Beck Program After Nearly 30 Years

3

Stu Burguiere has been a key part of The Glenn Beck Program for nearly three decades. But that run is set to end this week.

Burguiere has spent the past 28 years working on the show alongside Glenn Beck. He has served as a producer and co-host of the popular program during his long tenure.

In addition to working on The Glenn Beck Program, Stu Burguiere has also hosted a pair of shows for the Beck-founded TheBlaze. He hosted The Wonderful World of Stu, which ran until 2020, and also helmed a show alongside Pat Gray.

He currently hosts the podcast Stu Does America for the company.

In a post on social media, Burguiere revealed that he is in his final week working alongside Beck on his radio show.

“Only 5 more shows with Glenn Beck on radio, and snow, ice, and evil technical demons have stolen one of them!” he shared, noting that the weather made him unable to appear on the program Monday morning.

Burguiere has yet to announce what his next endeavor will entail. He told one commenter on social media that “I’ll have more on what is next later in the week.”

CW Network Reach Broadcast Rights Agreement With MGM Slam

0

The CW Network continues to expand its live sports portfolio after reaching a broadcast rights agreement to air The MGM Slam, a $1 million men’s professional tennis event scheduled for Sunday, March 1, from T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.

The third annual tournament will air live from 7–10 p.m. ET and 4–7 p.m. PT, placing the fast-paced exhibition squarely in a prime-time window as the network deepens its commitment to event-driven sports programming.

The MGM Slam features a single-night, eight-player knockout format built around 10-point tiebreakers, creating a condensed and high-stakes competition designed for television audiences.

Headlining the field is American star Taylor Fritz, currently ranked ninth in the ATP world rankings. Fritz will be joined by fellow American Tommy Paul, the world’s No. 20 player, along with Italian standout Lorenzo Musetti, ranked fifth globally. Kazakhstan’s Alexander Bublik, a recent ATP Hong Kong Open champion, rounds out the group of top-10 talent.

The lineup also includes several internationally recognizable names who bring both pedigree and personality to the event. Norwegian star Casper Ruud will participate while competing at the Australian Open, the season’s first Grand Slam. Nick Kyrgios, one of the sport’s most polarizing and popular figures, adds further intrigue, while Brazil’s Joao Fonseca and France’s Gael Monfils complete the eight-player field.

Coverage will be led by veteran broadcaster Ted Robinson, who will serve as the play-by-play voice. Chris McKendry will handle host reporting duties throughout the live telecast.

Robinson brings more than four decades of broadcasting experience to the booth. He has called major tennis events across multiple networks. Robinson also serves as the lead play-by-play announcer for Pac-12 football on The CW.

McKendry, a longtime ESPN tennis presence, remains one of the sport’s most respected studio and event hosts.

The MGM Slam aligns with the network’s broader effort to attract appointment viewing and reach passionate fan bases through marquee events rather than traditional season-long rights packages.

CBS News Adds The Free Press Writers and Podcasters As New Contributors

0

CBS News Editor-in-Chief Bari Weiss has announced a new list of contributors to the network, including writers from her The Free Press digital outlet and podcasters.

In a meeting with CBS News personnel, Weiss revealed that columnists and contributors from The Free Press, like Niall Ferguson and Patrick McGee, will join the television network as contributors, according to a report from Axios’ Sara Fischer.

The Free Press, established by Weiss following her high-profile exit from The New York Times, was purchased by CBS News parent company Paramount Skydance last year for a reported $150 million. That acquisition led to her being appointed the new leader of the network’s news division.

Also joining are lifestyle contributors like science podcasters Andrew Huberman and Peter Attia, chef Clare de Boer, culture-focused writer Casey Lewis, and cookbook author Caroline Chambers, among others.

Dr. Mark Hyman, a close confidant of Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr., will also join the network as a contributor.

The additions follow a plan implemented by Weiss to utilize independent writers with an established following to contribute to the CBS News brand.

For the first-time ever we’re uniting professionals across news media, sports media, and music radio. The show takes place June 30-July 2, 2026 at the SVA Theatre on West 23rd Street. Tickets can be purchased and hotel rooms can be reserved by clicking here. A huge thanks to our presenting sponsor, Point to Point Marketing for helping us make it happen.

23 speakers have been previously announced for the event. On-Air hosts Paul Finebaum, Angela Yee, Sid Rosenberg, Damon Amendolara, and Buck Sexton are involved. So too is Audacy CEO Kelli Turner, and programming executives Jon Zellner, Keith Dakin, Greg Strassell, and Jeff Sottolano. Click the Summit tab up top to see the full list of speakers.

Speaking of speakers, I’m thrilled to add another heavyweight to this year’s show. I’ve had the pleasure of welcoming this gentleman to our news conferences in Nashville and Washington D.C., but this is the first time he will join us in New York City. It’s my pleasure to announce the addition of Clay Travis to the 2026 Barrett Media Audio Summit.

Clay Travis has a strong grasp on the media business. He has lived it as a local and national radio host, podcast host, writer, author, TV personality, and owner. Clay regularly discusses media issues on his nationally syndicated radio show (Clay and Buck), during appearances on Fox News and Fox Sports 1 television, and on his podcast, Outkick The Show with Clay Travis. Whether you agree or disagree with him, he knows the business, captures your attention, and makes you think. That’s been reinforced during prior conversations at our Summit.

Since stepping into the timeslot previously occupied by Rush Limbaugh, Travis and Buck Sexton have grown the show to over 550 radio affiliates. They’ve become one of news/talk radio’s most formidable duos despite working together for less than five years. Travis has quickly made his mark nationally in the news/talk format after doing the same in sports while hosting mornings for Fox Sports Radio.

The Nashville native previously wrote for CBSSports.com and served as an editor for Deadspin. He also co-hosted the top-rated 3HL on 104.5 The Zone in Nashville for five years. A graduate of George Washington University and Vanderbilt Law School, Travis is married with three children, and lives in Nashville, Tennessee.

Clay Travis will join us at the SVA Theatre on Tuesday June 30th alongside his on-air partner Buck Sexton. This is the first time the two men will share the stage together at our show. News/Talk executives, program directors, talent and advertisers are encouraged to be in the room for what should be a smart, honest, and compelling conversation. We hope to see you there!
