CMA and Disney Extend Partnership Through 2032, Adding Disney+ Streaming

0

The CMA and Disney are staying together — and going bigger. Their renewed deal extends through 2032 and brings country music to Disney+ for the first time.

What We Know: The two companies added six years to an already 20-year partnership. The expanded deal covers the CMA Awards, CMA Fest, and CMA Country Christmas. Most notably, this year’s CMA Awards will stream live on Disney+ alongside the traditional ABC broadcast. The agreement also unlocks new opportunities across streaming and digital platforms.

What They Said: CMA CEO Sarah Trahern called it a milestone moment. “Extending our collaboration with Disney and expanding the show to livestream on Disney+ marks an exciting next step for CMA, allowing us to reach new audiences while continuing our role in elevating and shaping the genre.”

Disney Entertainment Television Chairman Debra OConnell added, “We’re grateful to Sarah Trahern and our incredible partners at the Country Music Association and are excited to continue hosting the most iconic night in Country Music for years to come.”

What Remains Unclear: Financial terms of the deal have not been disclosed. It’s also unclear how Disney+ viewership will be measured against the ABC broadcast. Additionally, no details have emerged yet about changes to CMA Fest programming under the new agreement.

What It Means: This deal signals a serious push to grow country music’s digital footprint. Streaming live on Disney+ broadens the genre’s reach well beyond traditional television audiences. Furthermore, the timing matters — Trahern retires at year’s end, and she’s clearly closing out her tenure on strong footing. Country music’s biggest night just got a much larger stage.

Sean “Slim” Widmer Returns to Spokane, Joins KDRK for Midday Shift

0

What We Know: Widmer joins KDRK as the replacement for Morgan Marie, who left in December for a career outside radio. He previously spent years at Spokane’s KXLY, joining in 2009 and adding music director duties in 2022. He departed KXLY in 2023 to relocate to Lexington, KY. Now he’s back in the 509, stepping into the midday slot at KDRK.

What They Said: Widmer made the announcement himself on social media. He stated: “I’m so stinkin’ excited to be doing middays on New Country 93.7 The Mountain. I am so excited to be back on the radio, it’s going to be so much fun. It is gonna be interesting to get into midday mode. Getting to work with TC again… is going to be great.”

He finished by joking: “When I get back to Spokane to visit, if I can do the show live there again, or visit the building again… the number of things I have hidden in the ceiling tiles there is insane.”

What Remains Unclear: It’s not yet known whether Widmer will take on any additional programming responsibilities at KDRK beyond middays. Furthermore, no details have emerged about whether his podcast, The Sean Widmer Podcast, will continue alongside his new full-time role.

What It Means: This move signals a strong vote of confidence from Stephens in a proven Spokane talent. Widmer brings familiarity, market credibility, and on-air experience to a key daypart. For KDRK, landing someone with deep local roots is a smart, low-risk play. Ultimately, it’s a homecoming that makes sense for everyone involved.

“This summer’s World Cup will be the biggest yet, with more teams than ever competing as the U.S. Men’s National Team takes the global stage on home soil, and we’re thrilled to partner with FOX Sports to bring this monumental tournament to our combined audiences. This partnership allows us to deliver complete, live coverage at an unprecedented scale, reaching fans wherever they are — at home, in the car or on the go — and connecting them to the passion and unforgettable moments of the World Cup.” -iHeartMedia Chief Programming Officer Tom Poleman

What Remains Unclear: It is unclear if the radio broadcasts will include pre- and post-match coverage. It is also unknown which broadcast radio stations will carry the USMNT and World Cup Final matches. The company did share that more than 100 FOX Sports Radio affiliates will broadcast those select matches.

What It Means: iHeartMedia has access to play-by-play audio of one of the most important events on the sports calendar. And by utilizing the FOX Sports broadcasts, it will cut down on costs for the network. It receives, conceivably, high-level programming at little or no cost. With games taking place in North America, the schedule is much more advertiser and listener-friendly than in years past.

And Yates’ expertise as a former White House national security advisor will be a benefit to the suite of programs. Joining an already established network gives it access to an already established conservative talk audience.

Fox Business Network’s Larry Kudlow Believes Business News Affects Everyone

He’s conquered Wall Street, the Fed, the White House, plus TV and radio screens for more than 40 years. Fox Business Network’s Larry Kudlow has seen markets rise and fall only to rise again from thriving free markets.

Unlike all his contemporaries, Kudlow’s had a front row seat to the markets from nearly every possible side of business. It’s what has helped shape his wit, humor, and humble grace across the decades.

“I was with Reagan. I was with the New York Fed before then. And I was on Wall Street before and after,” Kudlow recalled. “But I was always a commentator on media. That’s how it got started, particularly when business came to cable.”

From the Fed to the White House

From the late ’70s on, outlets were always calling Kudlow because “I had a point of view. I was a free market guy.” It also helped that he “enjoyed doing it.”

During this time, he was also working at the New York Federal Reserve. “I learned a lot at the Fed. I had great jobs, particularly in open market operations, which is the monetary arm,” Kudlow declared.

He later joined President Ronald Reagan’s administration, where his experience spanned far beyond any business role. “I learned my politics from Ronald Reagan,” Kudlow affirmed. “And to this day, it’s stood me well.”

With the phone still ringing for media appearances, Kudlow left the White House for Wall Street and a gig at Bear Stearns and later became a founding member of the board of advisors for the libertarian think tank group Independent Institute.

Humble about all he accomplished before turning 50, Kudlow simply said his hard work “all just accumulates to a body of knowledge, what I would call real-world knowledge.”

Building a Media Empire

Kudlow landed his first show in 2001 on CNBC, before heading back to the White House in 2018 in President Donald Trump’s first administration as the director of the National Economic Council.

At the end of Trump’s first term, Kudlow joined Fox Business in his 4 PM ET time slot. “Fox Business has become a real powerhouse,” Kudlow acknowledged. “Fox Business is now the number one-rated business network. And in fact, I’ll just say this with gratitude that our show is the number one-rated show.”

In fact, during 2025, Kudlow held the top business news program, with more than 280,000 viewers. His show has beaten the competition by nearly 70%.

He sees “business is [being] reported like never before,” and it’s great. “It’s not only the stock market, but it’s big stories, and there are so many of them.”

“The Iranian war is part of business stories with the energy crisis and the Naval blockade, squeezing out Iran and starving them. There’s always a business angle is what I’m saying.”

So in a world full of explosive political news, there is one simple reason Kudlow encourages everyone to tune into business news. “It affects their daily life,” Kudlow said.

“There’s at least 135 million Americans who are in the stock market one way or another. IRAs, 401ks, brokerage accounts, pension funds,” he added. “[Business news] affects jobs, employment. People like to know the outlook, what’s going on that might impact their lives, their kitchen tables, their wages.”

Free Markets, Free Opinions

With his eyes on the stock market and political movements, it reaffirms his belief that the best economy is a free market economy. “I believe in low, low tax rates and deregulation, and I think when those policies are put into place, you get maximum economic performance.”

Not one to shy away from sharing his opinions, he noted, “When [the market goes through] dry spells, I call it big government socialism. You get minimum economic performance. And I think that historical record shows that perfectly.”

“I have opinions. That’s probably the understatement of the world,” Kudlow jested. “I have opinions. And I’m not bashful about putting them out there. I have political opinions. I have markets, you know, economic opinions.” It’s all based on his hard work on and off camera, working in two different administrations, multiple TV networks, and on Wall Street.

For those who might be intimidated or shy away from business news, Kudlow makes it easy to understand and digest by “creating a story that makes sense using numbers, my own opinions, even some humor.” He noted, “I like to tell stories, and I think that helps people to understand and get away from the technical stuff.”

On Saturdays, Kudlow also hosts a three-hour radio show on 77 WABC, where storytelling is key to keeping the audience. He doesn’t believe the way he tells stories changes as the medium does.

“I’m just as much of a wise-guy on both,” Kudlow joked. “I have a sense of humor.”

Work Hard, Stay Optimistic

Kudlow’s free-market ideas have shaped businesses and policy, but he gave two nuggets of advice that can shape success for up-and-coming generations: work hard and be an optimist.

“I would speak to all the White House interns and I would always tell them the same thing, work hard. And when you think you’re working hard, you have to work even harder,” Kudlow said.

It’s advice that he follows to this day. “I have worked six days a week, virtually my entire career, including right now, and I’m no spring chicken. I’m working on Fox Monday through Friday, and I’m doing radio on Saturdays.”

Kudlow attested, “That’s what you need to do to succeed, and when you think you’re working hard, that’s probably the time you have to work even harder. It’s the best advice I could possibly give anybody.”

“I’ve always been an optimist my whole life, including the ups and the downs. I’ve always been optimistic, and I think optimism is the only way to go.” He added, “I think the combination of very hard work and an optimistic worldview is just a fabulous combination for success.”

ESPN Promotes Mike Foss to Replace David Roberts

0

As David Roberts begins to wind down his career, ESPN doesn’t have to look far for his replacement. It has named Mike Foss as Roberts’ successor.

What We Know: Mike Foss elevates to the role of Executive Vice President and Executive Editor of the Sports News and Entertainment division. Foss’ appointment is effective immediately. He will report to ESPN President of Content, Burke Magnus, working closely with David Roberts on the transition process. Roberts is expected to retire at the end of August. Foss will continue collaborating closely with The Pat McAfee Show in addition to assuming more responsibility..

What They Said: “In his nine years with ESPN, Mike has continually demonstrated his collaborative leadership style and excellent organizational and management skills, as well as his boundless vision, innovation and creativity. I am confident that he will continue to do so in his new role and help make us better every day.” -ESPN President of Content Burke Magnus

What Remains Unclear: Who replaces Foss leading the network’s studio and entertainment divisions? ESPN is expected to hire for the position. How that individual settles in will be important. With Dave Roberts exiting this summer, how does the transition period affect everyone? Does Foss step in and make tweaks or do they have to wait until Roberts signs off?

What It Means: Foss has worked at ESPN since 2017. He has been behind many of the network’s expansions in the digital space and is highly regarded. But he has big shoes to fill. Roberts is one of the most well-respected executives in the business.

0

ESPN and The CW have struck a deal for the over-the-air network to sublicense ACC football and basketball games.

What We Know: The CW will take 14 regular-season football games, 30 men’s basketball games, and 10 women’s basketball games from ESPN.

What They Said: “The ACC has been a transformative partner at the forefront of The CW’s expansion into live sports. We are thrilled to continue our relationship for another four seasons and provide the widest reach possible for all their games. We look forward to continuing our collaboration with the schools and student-athletes, whose stories have resonated deeply with our viewers and helped make ACC matchups some of the most-watched live events on the network.” -The CW Network President Brad Schwartz

What Remains Unclear: What windows the ACC broadcasts on The CW will air. In 2025, the majority of the network’s broadcast began in the 2:30 PM ET window.

What It Means: The CW continues to expand its sports programming. While it already had an established relationship with the ACC, an additional 14 regular-season football games are a lift for the network. It also marks an expansion of the relationship between the network and ESPN. Last month, the two announced that ESPN would be the exclusive streaming home for The CW’s sports content.

Ted Turner Tribute From Anderson Cooper Opens Warner Bros. Discovery Upfront

0

The Warner Bros. Discovery Upfront took place on Wednesday morning. It began on a somber note by remembering Ted Turner.

What We Know: The Warner Bros. Discovery upfront began with a tribute to Turner, who died last week at 87. Part of the tribute included the first moments of CNN on the air in 1980.

What They Said: “Ted Turner was so many things, but I knew him as the founder of CNN and Turner Broadcasting, a bold visionary with an unrivaled work ethic. He believed in the value of people’s access to information, and he built a company that has impacted not only everyone in this room, but anyone who has ever watched television. The legacy that he built continues to inspire this industry every day. And it will for years to come. So before we start today’s presentation, I just wanted to leave you with this famous Ted saying, which feels appropriate for today: ‘Early to bed, early to rise, work like hell and advertise!’” -Anderson Cooper

What Remains Unclear: If this will be the last ever Warner Bros. Discovery upfront. The company is in the process of being acquired by Paramount Skydance. Conceivably, that company would simply integrate the WBD brand into is already existing portfolio. But that also remains unclear.

What It Means: The death of Ted Turner remains on the minds of those at CNN and Warner Bros. Discovery.
