John Sterling Says He’ll Never Retire

The radio play-by-play voice of the New York Yankees is 80-year-old John Sterling. At that age, most people would think about slowing down, but not him. In a recent interview with Awful Announcing, Sterling said “I never plan to retire.”

In fact, this weekend Sterling will add another sport to his schedule. He will call the Atlanta Hawks’ visit to Brooklyn for YES. A spokesperson for the network said it will be the first time Sterling has called an NBA game in at least 12 years.

Calling basketball is nothing new for Sterling. He used to be the play-by-play voice of the Hawks. He also filled in on several occasions as the voice of the Nets on YES before Marv Albert joined the crew.

Sterling plans to broadcast for as long as he can. He cites Tony Bennett, Mel Brooks, and Carl Reiner as his heroes, because they are “all in their 90s and they’re still working.”

There is only one thing he can see stopping him. “Now if my voice goes, that takes care of that.”
