ABC Picks Houston & OU For Sunday Night Kickoff

A Sunday night contest has become a fairly new tradition for the opening weekend of the college football season. In 2019, ABC has selected the Houston Cougars’ visit to Oklahoma for that slot.

The game will feature a Sooners team that has been to each of the last two College Football Playoffs and is welcoming Alabama transfer Jalen Hurts as its new QB. They will host a Houston Cougars team that just lured Coach Dana Holgerson away from West Virginia in an attempt to reclaim their spot at the top of the American Athletic Conference.

Each of the past three years the Sunday night slot, which ABC has dubbed The Sunday Night Primetime Special has scored huge ratings. Each of the last two seasons the game has been the most watched of college football’s opening weekend. This year’s Sunday Night Primetime Special will kickoff at 7:30 pm on September 1.

The rest of the week 1 college football slate is still coming together for ABC and ESPN. The company previously announced that Florida and Miami’s meeting in the Camping World Kickoff game in Orlando would headline what has become known as “week 0” on August 24, when only a handful of teams start their seasons.
