MLB Meddling Holding Up Mets, Yahoo Deal

Yahoo was supposed to launch their Queens Baseball Club site before the season began. Not only has the Mets-themed boutique site not yet launched, but it has already undergone a name change. As previously reported, the site is now called Flushing Meadows Baseball Club and Yahoo is promising it will be online next month.

Back in February the Mets and Yahoo signed a three year, $3 million deal to create subscriber exclusive content. Apparently, it was not done with Major League Baseball’s approval and that is the reason for the delays.

According to Bob Raissman of The New York Daily News, MLB is trying to secure similar deals with Yahoo for other teams. The Cleveland Indians, Los Angeles Angels, and Texas Rangers are all said to be interested in building their own platforms through Yahoo. Nothing is official, but Raissman speculates that MLB is looking to get a share of the revenue generated by any future deals with Yahoo.

The Mets are certainly watching the calendar as the days go by without Flushing Meadows Baseball Club online. Yahoo is too. The site has already hired a full-time staff. If FMBC doesn’t go live before July, the amount of royalties the Mets receive from Yahoo drops.
