WFNZ and grocery store chain Harris Teeter are working together for the 17th annual Street Turkeys food drive. The store will donate 3,000 pies, 1,000 turkey breasts, and a truckload of eggs equivalent to 29,000 meals for the homeless and less fortunate in the Charlotte area.
A second grocery store chain, Food Lion, will also donate 500 turkeys to the effort thanks to a partnership with the Charlotte Hornets.
WFNZ hosts will be on location at the Harris Teeter Doghouse on Moorehead Street in Uptown Charlotte starting at 6 am on Wednesday. All WFNZ programming will originate live from the event that day until 7pm. The Hornets will also send their mascot Hugo, the Honey Bees cheerleaders, and select players to the Doghouse throughout the day.
Listeners are encouraged to come by and donate what they can to the Second Harvest Food Bank of Metrolina. Turkeys, canned food, monetary donations and non-perishable items will all be accepted.
Over the previous 16 years, WFNZ has helped feed over 70,000 families in need. In 2018, the food drive raised over $16,000, 850 frozen turkeys and 10,000 pounds of food in 13 hours.
