By the time 2020 ends, The Athletic will be home to 200 podcasts. Michael McCarthy of Front Office Sports reports that the site plans to add 50 new podcasts this year. It would increase The Athletic’s podcast footprint by 30%.
Nick Adler, who is the general manager of audio strategy for The Athletic, says the company is already having success in the audio space. He claims that the company’s podcasts see downloads in the “seven figures” each week.
The new offerings will be a combination of subscription only, free content, and ad-supported shows. McCarthy notes that the company would not comment on how much of the recent $50 million it just raised will be spent on the new podcasts.
Currently, the site hosts 152 podcasts. Most of them are team or region specific. Adler said that while many of the new podcasts will also follow that model, there will also be new evergreen and story-focused podcasts coming as well.
