David Glenn Out, Leads To Lineup Changes For The Fan

The North Carolina Sports Network has let syndicated host David Glenn go. His show was heard weekdays from noon until 3 pm on 11 stations across North Carolina.

Glenn and the North Carolina Sports Network teamed up in 2013 after Glenn’s successful run at 850 the Buzz in Raleigh. He not only went to work for the network, he also sold his magazine The ACC Sports Journal to the North Carolina Sports Network’s parent company, Curtis Media Group.

The David Glenn Show had a unique relationship in its home market of Raleigh. It originated from a studio in the Curtis Media building and was sold by Curtis reps, but aired on Capitol Broadcasting’s 99.9 the Fan.

Afternoon host Adam Gold will move into the 12-3 slot for 99.9 the Fan. That means a new afternoon show is being put together. It will feature Gold’s co-host Joe Ovies and former News & Observer writer Joe Giglio.

Giglio has been a sports writer in the Raleigh/Durham/Chapel Hill area for the last 20 years covering both the North Carolina Tar Heels and the NC State Wolfpack. In addition to his radio duties, Giglio will make appearances on the Capitol Broadcasting owned NBC affiliate WRAL-TV.

“It’s not often that you have the unique opportunity to get better when moving an air personality of Adam Gold’s stature to another time slot and also add a sports reporting vet like Joe Giglio to an already established show, so we’re very fortunate,” Fan program director Dennis Glasgow said in a press release. “In the end our listeners are the big winners.”

  1. Wow!! Terrible news! Best sports show by far gone? Really bad move. Glenn is the only local host that actually knows his stuff. Now there’s only goof off sports radio. So sad!!????

  2. Looking for where David Glenn will air next. He was the best personality in NC behind Mic Mixon.

  3. Oh my. So sorry to hear. David always brings a well thought our discussion for ACC sports and is excellent with interviews and reporting. Wishing him the best in his future which I am sure will be bright. You will be missed.

  4. Let us know where to find David Glenn show. Curtis Media just lost one of the areas best sports platforms.

  5. Nice cover story. Has to be about $ for you to let David Glenn get away and replace it with the Adam/Joe clown show.

  6. Terrible decision! Golic and Wingo is the only decent time slot they have left. I’ll be listening to David Glenn on another station or streaming if needed.

    • What is the rationale here? The most thoughtful, reasoned and logical on-air sports host, who keeps things light and puts things in perspective when needed.

  7. Whatever the reason, a bad outcome for intelligent, thoughtful, challenging sports/culture radio and young listeners/learners in RTP and NC. It is the end of 99.9 and WRAL for me – Golic and Wingo included[even though my daughter and son-in-law were Mike and Mike producers at different times] early in their ESPN careers.

Can not imagine the hole in real sports coverage and education that this move will generate.

  8. David will land on his feet, hopefully here in the Raleigh area. The only thing constant at Curtis Media is change.

  9. I liked D.G. but he did talk about politics a lot more than the guys on 98.1 the score, so I listened to Cowherd more. Interested to see who they put in the spot in the long one. Good luck to D.G. I’m sure he’ll find a good spot to land, & move on. Nothing wrong with a change

  10. So is Glenn out at just the Raleigh station or the entire statewide reach? I agree with many that Gold and Ovies at 3pm seem to think of sports as a sideline sometimes. On the rare chance they let someone call in it seems to surprise them listeners want to discuss sports and that seems like a joke to them. Both them and Glenn delved into politics way too much.

  11. In the words of Vince Lombardi what the hell is going on out there I will be finding out where David Glen goes tuning 99 the fan out

  12. Glenn did not get into politics – he did however get into social and economic and bias and other issues when listeners/callers or other biased sports media types [and there are plenty of them] got on the wrong side of facts, law and process. Sports runs all through aspects of life, not just a 3-2 pitch. David covered it all and rightfully so.

    • I disagree, I don’t tune into to hear his political opinion. And he was connected politically. He often boasted about getting Obama in an on air interview. One does not get a sitting president on air unless he/she strongly connected in politics of that president’s party. I don’t have a clue about Mark Packer’s or Wes Durham’s politics and they do a well informed sports program w/out the listener knowing their opinions.

  13. I am a little surprised about DG but you can’t continue to say people who do not agree with him politically are just ignorant and not expect some blow back. No doubt DGis a smart guy but he often seemed too ready to remind us how smart he thinks he is. Talented guy. Interesting to see what is next for him. Looking forward to finding out the entire story about this.

  14. When he started 10 years ago, I enjoyed his show because he really knew the ACC. He definitely got too political. After several snide remarks about Trump, I vowed to boycott his show which I have done. Since he discussed ECU and App. State a lot, maybe someone should have told him those are Republican strongholds. Perhaps I’m not the only one who tuned out. I tune into sports radio to avoid political discussion. Not sure if he is made to be in front of the camera, but could see him doing something with the ACC network. If he sticks to sports he would be an asset there.

  15. Wow! Are you kidding me?!
David Glenn is some of the best radio I have listened to in my life and that includes radio markets in Boston, NY/NJ and CT. As a transplant to the area I learned so much about the local sports scene and the ACC through his show.
This sucks and is not a good decision.

  16. I agree with Paul. When he would starting talking about his left leaning social stands, I would quickly change to another station. He knows his sports and does a decent job covering all of the major schools including ECU. The change is certainly about money, however I hope that he learns from this and keeps his show about sports!

  17. Won’t be listening to new host here in Greensboro. Glen was excellent! Another class move for Curtis media.

  18. Kinda stopped listening to him over the last 18 months as more of his show leaned towards professional sports instead of college. Wonder if this was why he was fired?

  19. I really used to love this show. Hell we knew he had a liberal slant even though he denied it. When trump won he really started a extreme left slant in shrewd way. I continued to listen. I started to feel like an idiot for disagreeing. He went off the deep end. I loved the show. It’s sports. He was good.
Do y’all remember the line where the guy said something along the lines of. “ politics have no place in sports .. who made that rule. “ well I guess we did.
Maybe you and Bumani (sp) jones. Can enjoy your podcast.

  20. Thank goodness Glenn , his love affair with unc chapel hill and his liberal outlook is gone. Most biased among alloadcasters

  21. Let’s see, you take the best North Carolina sports talk show off the air and still have the nerve to leave us with that obnoxious idiot Josh Graham!! Thanks. I’m done with barrettsports.

    • Well barrettsports didn’t own Glenn’s radio production they just produce content on sports media shows in general. It’s a news report. So blaming them for Glenn’s demise is completely incorrect.

  22. Adam Gold should have his own show in his same time slot. DG is one of a kind. His show was like no other. He isn’t another espn puppet. Sports radio is turning into daytime talk shows. They are all the same.

  23. I am disappointed that there is no longer a David Glenn show. Was listening to the replacements recently, not really knowing what was going on and they were clearly a step down from David Glenn

  24. David Glenn provided some of the most insightful and intelligent sports radio I’ve ever heard. He was right about people who make outrageous statements or comments. They need to be able to back up those outrageous comments, but most times with these people it’s just bluster. He will be missed as his comments were insightful, intelligent and progressive. Politically, he saw certain politicians for what they are, and he called them out and spoke truth to power. That made him memorable. Can’t wait to see where he lands in the media world.

    • Politically he definitely chose sides which is only useful in a non sports, highly opinonated talk show. No place for shows mkted as “sports talk.”

  25. I cannot believe that starting at 12 o’clock we have to listen to locker room chatter and everything that has nothing to do with sports. Will have to find another sports talk radio show some where.

  26. I was hoping a change was afoot where Sportschannel 8 would get a 3 hour afternoon slot, instead I’ve got to avoid 99.9 for 3 more hours, Oevius and Gold are both garbage, they dont know sports, Golds voice hurts my ears and Oevius’ intonation is excruciating.

  27. If you’re talking about the Raleigh mkt Adam Gold prob never been in a locker room as a participant.
But he will surely provide sarcastic, smarmy commentary as if it’s enlightened. Beware Raleigh, he may not have seen half the games he’ll pontificate about.

  28. Clear channel studied and made a change, fine. The show was excellent. also has a radio tree – Sports Ch 8
You are confusing Glenn injecting logic, decency and rationale with politics. Many folks have an inability to discuss real topics, which disallows talking about much socially, or economically. His show was very fact based – that’s a turn off for some, especially if you disagree on the – despite facts.
Think back to: women’s sports trying to get more funds topic on the show.
The HB2 topic which DG had to educate guys with uneducated opinions as our state lost millions.
The Rutgers women’s basketball comment from Don – and DG taking calls.
Go back and listen to a guy who was real versatile: Great convo’s on honesty, effort, and thinking for yourself about the right side of things.
That’s life. Sports is just part. Since you can’t hear Dillon Fence, now – check out the Greg Humphreys trio

  29. Really not an opportune time to launch a new sports show. DG seemed to like the sound of his own voice too much, but he was willing to tell people where he stood. We need more of that I will miss his show.

  30. Adam and Joe talk about sports less than 10% of the time and now they will be on for 6 hours? Thats terrible. DG did get preachy at times but still had the best show on the channel. Ive been listnening to podcast on my afternoon commute after realizing I was listening to a sport talk show for about an hour a day and not getting any sports information, but atleast Joe can name all of the songs of the 90’s. Horrible move

  31. I enjoyed Glenn’s show. He’s very knowledgeable and understands ACC country well. Listened to the show that replaced him and it’s a poor substitute – had to turn to something else.
I hope he returns soon on a different local station.

  32. No reason to listen after 10am now-horrible move…the guys after golic &wingo are horrible!!????????‍♂️

  33. Let’s see now, you kept Josh Graham Cracker but got rid of David Glenn ? Has to be a money issue . Grahams show is more about him and his buddies talking about nonsense instead of sports. I turn WSJS off at 3 pm. Losing Glenn is sad news for sure.
