Dave Portnoy May Be Eyeing Franchise Ownership

Barstool Sports founder Dave Portnoy sent a vague, oddly worded tweet today that seems to imply he may soon have an ownership stake in a professional team.

Portnoy lives in New York. The Mets are expected to go up for sale very soon. Even without knowing who the anonymous source Portnoy refers to is, it seems like New York’s National League team is the most likely the “anonymous professional sports team.”

Given the recent valuation of Barstool and Penn National’s investment in the company, it isn’t hard to imagine that Portnoy would have the capital to be involved in purchasing a team. However, his tweet simply says that he has been asked if he would “like to be involved.” That could mean any number of things.

Another question that could need to be answered is how does the league this “anonymous professional sports team” is in feel about Portnoy and Barstool. Major League Baseball once expressed hesitation in allowing Mark Cuban to buy a franchise simply because he was more outspoken and hands on than typical team owners. Given Barstool’s edgy brand and Portnoy’s outspoken and controversial identity, it isn’t hard to imagine a league pushing back on the idea of him owning a franchise.
