The NFL is back and that generally means heartache for the Detroit Lions fanbase. After the Lions began the 2020 NFL season by blowing a 17-point lead against the Chicago Bears, 97.1 The Ticket’s Mike Stone took issue with Matt Patricia defending his fourth quarter resume as a coach.
With a disappointing record of 9-23-1 since replacing Jim Caldwell who went 36-28 in Detroit, Patricia was asked during his Sunday postgame presser if there “was something in your coaching that maybe isn’t happening in the fourth quarter for you to close out games.” His response defended his coaching prowess and seemingly took credit for Malcom Butler’s game-winning pick of Russell Wilson in Super Bowl XLIX, when Patricia was an assistant with the Patriots.
“Yeah, I don’t think so. I think I got probably one of the biggest plays in the fourth quarter in the history of the NFL where I think I did a pretty good job,” Patricia said Sunday.
That answer didn’t sit well with the co-host of Detroit’s Morning Show with Stoney & Heather who isn’t interested in what Patricia did more than five years ago for New England.
In “New England you had Tom Brady, New England you had Bill Belichick, New England you had players who bought into a culture. You don’t have that here,” Stoney said emphatically.
“Don’t bring up what you did in New England after a devastating, disgusting heartbreaking loss that these fans have put up with year and year. Matt Patricia don’t go play your resume! It doesn’t wash here!” Stoney yelled.
Similar arrogance from Patricia has been on display throughout his tenure in Detroit which began in 2018. But after two losing seasons and a brutal start to year three, Stoney spoke up for Lions fans who are less than comforted by Patricia’s resume with New England.
