Randi Mahomes is proud of her son. She wants to make she he gets all of the credit he is due as the NFL’s best quarterback, and she knows that can’t happen if the people calling Monday Night Football can’t get his name right.
While she didn’t mention Louis Riddick by name, he was the source of Randi Mahomes’s frustration on Monday night. She tweeted that she was tired of hearing the play-by-play man call Patrick Mahomes “Pat.”
Tagging ESPN in the tweet is a nice use of the social media version of “I need to speak to your manager.”
Patrick Mahomes certainly isn’t the first athlete to deal with this. One of Randi’s followers responded that former NASCAR driver Sterling Marlin’s mother complained about announcers dropping the G from his first name when identifying his car on the track.
Steve Levy pointed the tweet out to Louis Riddick on air during the game. Riddick didn’t push back. He acknowledged his mistake.
“Guilty, guilty, guilty,” Riddick laughed. “I apologize, Patrick.”
Certainly no fan is going to hear Riddick call the quarterback of the Kansas City Chiefs “Pat” instead of “Patrick” and think there is a totally different person on the field. From Randi’s perspective though, it is about respect. The guy is the best quarterback in the NFL. He won the league MVP and a Super Bowl before he was 25. If he goes by Patrick, show the proper respect by calling him Patrick!
