The New York Times retracted a story regarding the cause of death for a Capitol police officer who was thought to have been killed by Trump supporters.
“New information has emerged regarding the death of the Capitol Police officer Brian Sicknick,” the paper wrote.
The initial report indicated that Sicknick was struck with a fire extinguisher but as the investigation progressed authorities began to question whether or not he was hit.
The article stated that he died “from brain injuries he sustained after Trump loyalists who overtook the complex struck him in the head with a fire extinguisher.”
Investigators reportedly found no evidence that Sicknick sustained blows to the head. The article cited anonymous sources who said that the cause of death was blunt force trauma to the head.
Authorities said Sicknick actually suffered a stroke which may have occurred when he swallowed pepper spray.
