Bob McCown Returning To Local Radio in Canada

Nearly two years after parting ways with Sportsnet 590 The Fan, Canada’s iconic sports radio host Bob McCown is returning to the terrestrial airwaves with a daily show.

Beginning March 15, McCown and his former co-host John Shannon will reunite for a sports radio show, joining news talk station Sauga 960 AM every weeknight at 6pm. McCown joined the station’s morning host Mike Richards on Wednesday to discuss the new venture with Sauga 960 AM.

The announcement comes just one week after McCown told The Athletic he recently had talks about returning to Sportsnet 590 The Fan, the Toronto sports radio station he became synonymous with. Despite the mutual interest, an offer never materialized.

For 30 years, McCown served as the primary host of Prime Time Sports in  Toronto. A fixture in sports media for over four decades and a sports radio pioneer, McCown helped to launch the format in Canada.

He owned the area’s top-rated afternoon sports show for the better part of three decades, where he was considered an elite interviewer known for tenaciously challenging guests and callers. Nicknamed the “Bobcat,” McCown would don a pair of sunglasses during his TV simulcast and used coined phrases such as “who gives a flying fadoo?”

The 68-year-old native of Ohio recently said his 2019 exit from Sportsnet was led by a financial decision from the company. After parting ways with Sportsnet, McCown had no plans of retiring, saying “I’ll be back.” McCown has since launched multiple digital ventures and podcasts through his production company, Fadoo Productions, but the new partnership with Sauga 960 AM marks his return to terrestrial radio.
