A mainstay in Bay Area radio is retiring after four decades behind the microphone. KCBS Radio morning news anchor Stan Bunger will sign-off for the final time next week, the station announced.
Bunger has been at the center of some of the biggest stories that San Francisco has ever seen. From championship parades, earthquakes, massive fires, and most recently COVID-19.
“Stan is the gold standard of news anchoring at KCBS,” said director or programming and news Jennifer Klurfeld Seelig, in an internal memo. “Stan embodies the role of drive-time news anchor. He is the steward of his daypart. Quarterback of an award-winning team. A leader. A mentor. He brings passion and creativity into the Newsroom and across the airwaves every day.”
Bunger’s illustrious career began in 1977 at KRKC in King City, California. He also spent time at radio stations in Dallas, Sacramento, and San Jose.
Klurfeld Seelig said some of Bunger’s greatest work came at a time when the community needed news the most, the COVID-19 pandemic.
“Stan elevated his already-stellar game to an entirely new level during the pandemic,” she said. “Truly, he has performed at an otherworldly level. His A+ game skyrocketed to an A++ game. He has been diligent and resourceful – and unflappable even on the most challenging of days. Stan recognized – very early on – the weight of the story.”
Bunger’s final broadcast is scheduled for Friday, June 11.
