Cronkite School Announces Brett Kurland as New Assistant Dean

Brett Kurland has won an Emmy award on the sports media side of his career in journalism. He’s also the founding director of the Cronkite News Phoenix Sports Bureau at the Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communication.

However, he’s now jumping into helping oversee the next generation of journalists on the news media side. The Cronkite School announced that Kurland is the new assistant dean for Instruction and Partnerships.

“We are incredibly fortunate to have Brett expand his leadership duties and responsibilities. Brett has done a remarkable job serving as the director of sports programs and strategic initiatives, playing a leading role in building our sports program into the top sports journalism program in the country,” Cronkite School Dean Battinto L. Batts Jr. said. 

“He has led the strategy behind our bachelor’s and master’s degree programs in sports journalism. Those programs now boast more than 500 students.”

In his new role, Kurland will supervise the Cronkite News bureaus in Phoenix, Washington, D.C., and Los Angeles and the Cronkite Sports bureaus in Phoenix and Los Angeles.

“I could not be more excited to share some career news!!! I’m so fortunate to continue to work with the amazing students, faculty, and staff,” Kurland said on Twitter
