Jemele Hill: Overturning Roe v. Wade Is ‘About Controlling Women’

The Supreme Court’s decision to overturn Roe v. Wade last Friday continues to be a topic of conversation; while many express various emotions, The Atlantic’s Jemele Hill isn’t surprised by the ruling.

During her appearance on “The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz,” Hill stated that the Republican party has been playing the long game, culminating in the decision last week.

“I can believe it because this has been a decades-long plan in the making, and, you know, the conservatives have been playing the long game. And if you want to go, go back to as immediately as 2016,” Hill said.

“The former president made it very clear from the beginning that he intended to put forth Supreme Court justices who would repeal or who would gut Roe versus Wade. He did not hide his intention. He was very clear about it. So I’m not surprised because I knew once they got in a position to do it, that they would indeed do it.”

One of the talking points following the ruling is that the decision is to hand it back to the states to allow them to decide on what to do with abortion. Hill added that overturning Roe v. Wade isn’t about states’ rights but about controlling women.

“This is one of those rights that should be nationally protected. It shouldn’t come down to various states who, as we have seen, in active trigger laws anticipating this specifically,” Hill said. “This is about controlling women, period.”

“It’s about controlling women and also putting us in our place. And so it’s a dark day. I guess heartbreaking is just the only word that comes to mind and feels really awful, the fact that there’s now a generation of women who have less rights than the previous generations.”
