The Sarasota Herald-Tribune is under fire for publishing a guest column that defended a group with ties to the Jan 6th riots and alleged white supremacy.
According to The Hill, the paper’s executive editor explained while denouncing the Proud Boys as a group that “promotes white nationalist views.”
“Our editorial process failed to keep this column from being published as it appeared, which did not meet our standards,” Executive Editor Jennifer Orsi wrote.
The column titled “Attacking Proud Boys does disservice to caring parents” was published on Sunday and was in direct response to a Jun 24th guest column that criticized a local school board member for alleged ties to the Proud Boys.
“The Herald-Tribune opinion page will not provide a forum for support of the Proud Boys, an extremist group that promotes white nationalist views, has been labeled a terrorist group by two countries, and has top members under indictment on charges of seditious conspiracy in the Jan 6th Capitol attack,” Orsi stated.
“We strive to provide a broad range of views from our community, including opinions in opposition to those of our editorial board,” she added.
