John Kruk, a Philadelphia Phillies analyst for NBC Sports Philadelphia, got so bummed out after the Mets regained the lead on the Phillies in the ninth inning, that he almost risked his television career.
On Sunday, the Phillies led the Mets 8-7 going into the top of the ninth inning when Mark Canha and Brandon Nimmo hit home runs to pull ahead of Kruk’s Phillies. There was a lot of silence following the Nimmo homer run before Kruk finally spoke up.
Clearly frustrated, Kruk said, “I’d like to say something, but I’m afraid”.
That’s when Tom McCarthy, the team’s television play-by-play voice, gave Kruk some advice, “Give yourself five seconds”.
“Nah, I need more than that,” Kruk frustratingly replied. “I’m afraid that this would be my last broadcast. I really – so I’m gonna – just… all right, here we go,.”
