Dave Wannstedt: I Didn’t Think Dan Bernstein Knew Anything About Sports

Towards the back half of his tenure as head coach of the Chicago Bears, Dave Wannstedt crossed paths with 670 The Score host Dan Bernstein.

Bernstein joined The Score in 1995. By that time, Wannstedt was entering his third season in the Windy City. Wannstedt coached the Bears through the 1998 season.

In an appearance on Parkins & Spiegel on Friday, Wannstedt said when he first noticed Bernstein, who at the time was hired as a reporter, he didn’t think Bernstein was part of the press pool.

“I thought he was there to work in the front office or something. I didn’t think he knew anything about sports,” Wannstedt said.

Dave said he figured team director of PR Bryan Harlan never invited Bernstein to any press conferences. But Wannstedt did admit he was more focused on coaching than interacting with the media.

“We didn’t have much contact,” he said. “I had bigger fish to deal with and fry than Bernsy at that point. He was just getting started. He didn’t know if it was stuffed or blown up, the football, when he showed up.”
