Twitter is implementing a new change that has caused controversy. Only verified users will have access to TweetDeck, a dashboard allowing users to organize and monitor the accounts they follow. Businesses and media organizations often use this feature to manage and track different feeds. The platform announced this update on Monday.
The change will take place next month and was initiated by billionaire owner Elon Musk, who took over the company last year. Despite some users protesting the changes, he has been seeking to add revenue streams to the platform.
Musk recently launched a new feature on Twitter Blue, offering a blue check mark to its subscribers.
Additionally, he announced temporary limits on Twitter reading, allowing verified users to read up to 10,000 tweets per day, while unverified accounts are limited to 1,000 and new unverified accounts to 500. Musk cited “extreme levels of data scraping & system manipulation” as the reason for this limitation, but it’s yet to be confirmed. The announcement of TweetDeck paywall followed shortly after.
A tweet announced that users must become Verified within 30 days to use TweetDeck. Some users had experienced issues with the old version of TweetDeck after reading limits were implemented by Musk. Twitter seemed to limit access to its platform for those not logged into an account.
The company announced on Twitter that they are launching a better version of TweetDeck. They assured users that all saved searches, lists, and columns would transfer to the new site. Twitter experienced a loss of advertisers during Musk’s leadership.
