They may not be considered the greatest broadcast trio of all time, but Mike Francesa thinks New York Mets broadcasters Gary Cohen, Ron Darling and Keith Hernandez are some of the best at what they do.
On Wednesday’s edition of The Mike Francesa Podcast, Francesa said Gary, Ron and Keith have a rapport and rhythm that can’t be surpassed. Mike said he spoke from experience in recognizing the chemistry they have having worked alongside Chris “Mad Dog” Russo at WFAN for two decades.
“There is a very good dynamic there among the three,” Francesa said. “They like each other, they set each other up very well. They understand what chemistry means. And if you’re gonna have a team that’s successful, and I know this because I spent 20 years on a team that was ultra successful, you have to understand chemistry and how it works. And these guys do.”
Mike continued that it’s clear that Gary, Ron and Keith all have their own unique jobs to do for the broadcast, but they all come together so beautifully in the booth.
“Ron has a distinct role, Keith has a distinct role both in terms of technical aspects and in terms of the other aspects of the broadcast,” he said. “Gary has the loudest personality to evolve more on the air so they’re as good as it gets.”
Francesa said he wouldn’t officially rank the Mets TV booth among the other greats out there because he thinks rankings are meaningless. But he made it clear that he thinks very highly of the work those three do on a nightly basis.
“You’re gonna have to go a long way to find a broadcast team that’s better than those three,” Francesa said.
