Jerry Recco: I Like Rich Cimini Question After Hearing Full Audio

Date:

The New York Jets dropped their final prime-time television contest of the 2023 NFL regular season on Thursday night, falling to the Cleveland Browns by a final score of 37-20. With the win, the Browns clinched a spot in the NFL playoffs for the second time in 21 seasons. While the celebrations were taking place on the field at Cleveland Browns Stadium, Jets head coach Robert Saleh was addressing facets of the matchup in his postgame press conference. Within the postgame press conference, ESPN NFL Nation reporter Rich Cimini asked Saleh about a perceived lack of emotion and demeanor on the sidelines throughout the game.

During his question, Cimini conveyed to Saleh that he may not be expressing what he really feels inside, but he was curious to know the overall mood of the head coach. After Saleh did not initially understand the question, he replied by querying whether or not he should throw the podium on the floor. Rich Cimini responded to this statement by telling Saleh that he could do whatever he needed.

“Cimini’s like, ‘Whatever you want to do – that’s what I’m trying to get to the bottom of,’” Chris Lopresti expressed after playing audio of the press conference Friday morning on WFAN. “‘How do you feel? What do you want to say? What do you want to do?’”

Saleh has been the head coach of the Jets for three seasons and in that time has a 17-32 record with no playoff appearances. Although the team has constructed an elite defensive unit, its offense has struggled to help the team win games. Because of this and other shortcomings, the organization is missing the playoffs for the 13th consecutive season, the longest such streak in the National Football League.

“Hearing the full question makes me like the question even more and the exchange because all Rich is trying to say is, ‘You look like someone who didn’t just lose a game on Thursday Night Football,’” co-host Jerry Recco said. “Again, I’m not putting words in his mouth, but, ‘You look like someone who doesn’t give a crap really.’”

Lopresti felt that there is an element of surprise involved in the entire thing, presuming that there is still some shock after losing Rodgers just four plays into the season. Perhaps a different sentiment is being communicated behind closed doors, he conjectured, but he feels the external view is of someone who has checked out, hence the question from Rich Cimini. People were made privy to some of the behind-the-scenes facets of the team during the preseason on Hard Knocks, during which Saleh used expletives and addressed his team in various closed meetings.

“While that could be misleading or untrue, that’s all we have to go on,” Lopresti said. “I think that’s what Rich [Cimini] was trying to get to the bottom of there…. He doesn’t have to tell us. Head coaches all the time don’t reveal stuff, but I didn’t think it was an unfair question.”
