Clay Travis: Pat McAfee Isn’t Responsible For What’s Said On His Show

Pat McAfee has taken some shots over the last week following Aaron Rodgers comments about ABC host Jimmy Kimmel, but Clay Travis thinks it’s not on McAfee to dictate what guests say.

On OutKick The Show on Tuesday, Travis said in general he feels that hosts shouldn’t be liable for anything a guest says that may be offensive or controversial.

“I don’t believe that any host should be responsible for what any guest says on their program,” Travis said. “That is, I fundamentally reject the idea that you are somehow responsible for what someone else says on your program.”

Travis felt like no matter whose program Rodgers appeared on, his being an active quarterback and a decorated quarterback in the NFL was worth having conversations about.

“It makes sense to have him on any sports show in America,” Travis said. “And if you have him on and he says interesting things that make news whether you agree with him or disagree, I think that’s the goal of the guest.”

“The only thing I can control is my opinion and my work ethic and what I put out into the world,” he added.

Clay Travis continued that a host-driven show is more preferred over a guest-driven show. He felt like a guest-driven show was a larger sign of a host not having solid enough chops for the job.

“If you’re relying on a guest exclusively, then that means that you’re not a good enough host,” he said. “Ultimately, anyone in my kind of job has to be the driving force behind whether the show is successful or not.”

He finished his point by saying ultimately it’s the guest’s job to be entertaining or informative, and if you’re lucky like with Rodgers, sometimes you’ll get both.

“What guests should do is give you interesting opinions or expertise,” he said. “If a guest is not giving you interesting opinions or expertise, they make no sense at all as a guest.”
