CBS News has closed its Tokyo bureau this week in a move intended to cut costs, with several staffers seeing their jobs eliminated in the process.
The cuts came on Tuesday when CBS News London chief Andrew Roy arrived to deliver the news, according to a report from the New York Post.
“CBS News will continue to have a team in Asia, including an on-air correspondent,” a network spokesperson said. “We also have a partnership with the BBC which provides us with additional resources in the region.”
The only other Asian bureau the network has now is located in the Chinese capital of Beijing. However, that location only features a producer, with no correspondents on the ground.
The news of the reductions in the Japanese capital comes on the heels of other cost-cutting measures put in place by the outlet earlier this year. Parent company Paramount Global slashed 800 jobs, with 20 news employees cut at that time.
