The Washington Mystics and Audacy have announced a partnership that will result in Mystics games being broadcast live on The Team 980 for the 2024 WNBA season. The outlet has become the flagship home of the team and will commence live game broadcasts on Thursday night when the team faces the Chicago Sky at 7 p.m. EST from Capital One Arena. Live game broadcasts have been revealed through the conclusion of the regular season in the fall.
The audio feed over the air will be simulcast from the television broadcast on Monumental Sports Network, which features play-by-play announcer Meghan McPeak and analyst Christy Winters-Scott on the call, along with the halftime show. Most game broadcasts are slated to air on The Team 980; however, there will also be select games airing on 106.7 The Fan and The Bet Washington. All games will also be streamed locally through the free Audacy app.
“We are delighted to broaden our relationship with Audacy and continue to drive the fast-paced growth of women’s basketball in the DMV region,” Zach Leonsis, president of new media and new enterprises at Monumental Sports & Entertainment, said in a statement. “We have seen incredible television viewership for the Mystics during the first weeks of the season and we’re thrilled to offer our fans another way to tune into our games.”
In addition to the Washington Mystics, The Team 980 contains a robust live and local lineup of sports programming and game broadcasts. The station features The Sports Junkies, Kevin Sheehan, Chris Russel and Craig Hoffman, along with broadcasts of Washington Wizards contests during the NBA season. Moreover, the outlet broadcasts collegiate sports such as Maryland Terrapins football and men’s and women’s basketball, as well as Georgetown Hoyas men’s basketball.
“The Team 980 is where the DMV goes to talk basketball,” Chris Kinard, vice president of sports programming and cluster director of operations at Audacy Washington, D.C., said in a statement. “We are excited to bring an audio presentation of Mystics games to their growing fanbase on The Team 980 AM and available on mobile and smart speakers through the Audacy app.”
Monumental Sports Network garnered the highest television viewership in six seasons for a regular-season WNBA game when the Washington Mystics opened the season against the New York Liberty on May 14. The telecast was the most-watched WNBA regular season broadcast since at least the start of the 2021 season. The network is airing 32 of the Mystics’ 40 regular-season matchups and also producing additional programming surrounding the team.
“Demand for Mystics live game coverage is at an all-time high and adding a radio broadcast will allow even more fans to follow our team throughout the season,” Alycen McAuley, chief business officer of the Washington Mystics, said in a statement. “We are proud to see Monumental Sports Network and Audacy partner in this way and use their platforms to elevate women’s basketball.”
