Anthony Edwards, all-star guard for the Minnesota Timberwolves, is reportedly slated to become a star of the new Netflix docuseries spotlighting different players around the NBA. Modeled after the Quarterback docuseries last season produced in tandem with Omaha Productions, NFL Films and 2PM Productions, the venture spotlights various parts of the 2023-24 season and is expected to be released in the fall. Shams Charania of The Athletic described Edwards’ role in the project as being “the breakaway act” as the company releases its first NBA documentary series. Additional players featured in the series include Los Angeles Lakers forward LeBron James, Boston Celtics forward Jayson Tatum, Miami Heat forward Jimmy Butler and Sacramento Kings forward Domantas Sabonis.
Netflix is not reportedly part of the new NBA television media rights package, which is said to include ESPN, NBC and Amazon’s Prime Video for a collective $76 billion over 11 years. The streaming company, however, is broadcasting two NFL games on Christmas Day this season as part of a three-year deal with the league. The production of the NBA-focused series, as reported by The Athletic, includes Omaha Productions, SpringHill Company and Higher Ground Productions.
Edwards recently signed a contract extension with Adidas that reportedly pays more than eight figures per year. The All-NBA guard is participating in the Olympic Games Paris 2024 as a member of Team USA. During the NBA regular season, he averaged 25.9 points per game on 5.4 rebounds and 5.1 assists in 79 games played. Edwards will be entering his age-23 season in the league this fall, his fifth season as a member of the Timberwolves and in the NBA.
In addition to Quarterback, Netflix recently premiered Receiver, its new NFL docuseries that follows Davante Adams, Amon-Ra St. Brown, George Kittle, Deebo Samuel and Justin Jefferson throughout the 2023 season. The venture is produced by NFL Films, Omaha Productions and 2PM Productions.
