Vice President Kamala Harris has chosen Gov. Tim Walz (D-MN) as her running mate atop the Democratic ticket for the 2024 presidential race.
The news broke Tuesday morning that Harris had chosen Walz from a list of vetted candidates that reports included Gov. Josh Shapiro (D-PA) and Sen. Mark Kelly (D-AZ), among others.
An Army National Guard veteran who rose to the rank of command sergeant major, Walz was a high school social studies teacher and football coach before entering politics in 2006. He served six terms in the United States House of Representatives before being elected to governor of Minnesota in 2018.
Vice President Kamala Harris is expected to introduce the 60-year-old Walz at a campaign rally Tuesday evening in Philadelphia.
Reactions poured in from news media members. Some called the decision by Harris to choose Tim Walz as her running mate a foolish one. Others argued that the decision not to select Shapiro, the governor of a swing state, could come back to haunt Harris. Many shared their belief that Shapiro wasn’t selected due to his religion, as the Jewish governor could be viewed as controversial to some voters who support Palestine.
