Eugene Daniels, who has served as the co-author of the “Playbook” for Politico and a White House correspondent for the digital entity, is joining MSNBC in a full-time role on The Weekend.
MSNBC officially announced the addition of Daniels as a Senior Washington Correspondent and new co-host of The Weekend during Morning Joe on Monday morning.
“You guys put me on TV all the time, so now they just stuck me there,” Daniels joked with Joe Scarborough and Mika Brzezinski during the announcement. “This is all your fault.”
Daniels is no stranger to MSNBC. He has served as a contributor to the network since 2021, later being elevated to senior contributor on Morning Joe in 2022.
Having worked at Politico since 2018, Daniels covered the Biden administration while also co-authoring the outlet’s “Playbook”, the popular early morning newsletter.
In his new role at MSNBC, Daniels will co-anchor The Weekend alongside Jonathan Capehart and a yet-to-be-named co-host, widely believed to be Ayman Mohyeldin. The previous hosts of the show — Symone Sanders Townsend, Alicia Menendez, and Michael Steele — exited the timeslot to move to the 7 PM ET weekday window in place of The ReidOut with Joy Reid.
In addition to his role at Politico, Eugene Daniels also serves as the president of the White House Correspondents’ Association.
The addition of Daniels comes at a tumultuous time for MSNBC. The network recently saw a change at the position of President, as Rashida Jones resigned before being replaced by Rebecca Kutler. The network is in the midst of changes to its lineup as Reid has exited in favor of the Sanders Townsend, Menendez, and Steele trio.
Additionally, MSNBC is making preparations to be spun-off from NBC News as Comcast will bundle its cable television properties into a new company labeled “SpinCo” later this year.
