94WIP Pays Tribute To Retiring Producer Joe Weachter in Final Show

"For everybody who listened, I just feel a lot of love,”

Date:

Today was the final day at 94WIP in Philadelphia for veteran radio producer Joe Weachter, who has produced the station’s morning show for the last 35 years. Earlier this week, he announced his retirement after 38 years with the Philadelphia sports radio brand, making him the longest-tenured employee at the station.

Earlier today, 94WIP’s morning show, featuring Joe DeCamara and Jon Ritchie, paid tribute to Weachter with a special broadcast dedicated to their producer. The show featured visits from former WIP morning show host Angelo Cataldi, along with many other notable figures in Philadelphia sports radio.

“For everybody who listened, I just feel a lot of love,” said Weachter. “I loved this station; I wanted it to be the best even after The Morning Show took the mantle from Angelo (Cataldi). Keep running with it.”

Weachter has spent the last two years working with DeCamara and Ritchie, who took over the morning timeslot following Cataldi’s retirement. His final day on the job brought a special in-studio reunion with Cataldi, who reflected on their time working together.

“I owe my career to him because he saved me so many times,” Cataldi said on 94WIP. “His talent, his ability to pick out the exact right sound bite. The ability to find the exact right sound effect, to keep everything rolling perfectly. To berate off the air any caller who’s completely inappropriate. To just be the guy who ran it all, and to be able to do that at the best radio station who does sports in America. At this level for this long is mind-boggling.”

Adding to the heartfelt send-off, Al Morganti, who co-hosted with Cataldi on WIP, was also in the studio to share his thoughts on Weachter’s lasting impact.

“You did a great job; you’re a great friend,” said Morganti. “You kept the chaos to a minimum, but you knew that we had to be on the edge of disaster. You loved living on the edge and then taking it all back. So, thanks for everything and enjoy the beer.”

As the tribute continued, the current 94WIP Morning Show duo, Joe DeCamara and Jon Ritchie, expressed their gratitude to their longtime executive producer.

“The Beatles said all you need is love. It’s not actually true. In radio, to have any chance of having any shot to be any good, you do need some love, but you need a lot of help,” noted DeCamara. “You need a lot of help behind the scenes and on the air, and you provided both. We love you, and we thank you. Congratulations to you on a stupendous career.”

Ritchie also shared his appreciation for the relationship he built with Weachter over the years.

“You set the standard for a sports radio producer,” said Ritchie. “It was an honor to know you, and I will continue to be honored, and I promise I will continue to know you. I can’t wait to hear where your adventures take you.”

Weachter’s final day at WIP served as a touching tribute to his remarkable career at the station. As he embarks on retirement, he shared a few final words with listeners and colleagues.

“I appreciate everything today. This was a very nice day for me today,” said Weachter.
