The Radio Television Digital News Association (RTDNA) has announced the winners of the first round of the Edward R. Murrow Awards, and KIRO Newsradio 97.3 saw several wins.
The winners of the Region 1 awards — which encompass Alaska, Idaho, Montana, Oregon, and Washington — were announced, and the Bonneville International Seattle news/talk station earned wins in three categories in the Radio | Large Market sector.
First, the station earned the top honor for Feature Reporting for its story on the graffiti problem being exacerbated on local freeways.
Secondly, the station earned the Murrow Award in the region for Sports Reporting for its story on how the WNBA’s Seattle Storm was preparing to utilize the surge in women’s basketball popularity ahead of its season.
Finally, KIRO Newsradio 97.3 earned the Overall Excellence honor for the Edward R. Murrow Awards in the large market sector.
Public radio saw plenty of victories in the Region 1 awards, too. KUOW in Seattle won five categories in the Large Market Radio sector. Meanwhile, Oregon Public Broadcasting won three awards, while Mountain West News Bureau in Boise and KNKX — the jazz, blues, and NPR News station in Seattle — took home an award for best newscast.
Public radio earned each of the wins in the small market sector, as Alaska Public Media, Boise State Public Radio, KFSK Radio, KYUK Public Media, KLCC in Eugene, KUCB in Unalaska, Montana Public Radio, and Jefferson Public Radio each earned award wins.
