For the first time in 20 years, ESPN will be bringing SportsCenter on a cross-country tour this summer for a mixture of live on-site shows and original segments emanating across the United States. The program will be airing content from all 50 states for 50 consecutive days, an initiative that will bring the show and its anchors to fans throughout the nation. Programs will air from athletic venues, events and other hometown locations across the seven-week venture as ESPN prepares to launch its direct-to-consumer product later in the year. Segments from the tour will be featured across ESPN platforms, and there will be multiple editions of the show airing across various outlets.
“SportsCenter isn’t just a studio show – it’s part of the fabric of sports culture across the country,” David Roberts, executive vice president and executive editor of sports news and entertainment at ESPN, said in a statement, “and we can’t wait for our anchors and other ESPN personalities to show up in people’s backyards as we celebrate the passion for sports that we all share.”
Throughout the tour, the show will air from events such as WNBA All-Star Weekend, MLB Home Run Derby, The Ocho at ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex and the ESPYS. Scott Van Pelt will begin the proceedings on Friday, June 27 with the official kickoff episode taking place from Washington, D.C. at 5 p.m. EST. Eight hours later, Nicole Briscoe and Michael Eaves host the second edition of the show from UFC 317 in Las Vegas, Nev. at 1 a.m. EST. The opening weekend closes with Shae Cornette anchoring from BMX Mount Rushmore Nationals in South Dakota at 7 a.m. EST.
This initiative concludes in mid-August with the Friday, Aug. 15 edition of the show airing from Burlington, Vt. around University of Vermont soccer with anchor Kelsey Riggs. The final edition of SportsCenter: 50 States in 50 Days broadcasts from the Little League World Series and is slated to feature Kevin Neghandi as the anchor.
