Following weeks of outcry from the digital media publication OutKick, the outlet was finally granted an opportunity to attend an Atlanta Dream WNBA game and received a day-of-game credential approval. OutKick founder Clay Travis was one of the leading voices in seeking clarification on why the league—and more importantly, the Atlanta Dream—were continuing to deny media access to OutKick following a viral clip of star center Brittney Griner saying what many believed to be “trash f***ing white girl” after fouling out of a game against the Indiana Fever.
Eventually, OutKick reporter Dan Zaksheske was granted access by the Dream over the weekend and questioned Griner on the viral moment—not once, but twice. Before the game, Griner told the reporter that she remembered the play where she fouled out but couldn’t recall what she said on the bench afterward.
Later, following the game on Sunday, Griner was asked again about the incident by Zaksheske.
“No, I would never say that,” said Griner. “There’s no place for that in our league. I wouldn’t say that. I was mad about the call.”
When asked a follow-up by Zaksheske—pointing out that even though Griner couldn’t remember exactly what she said in the viral clip—she stated she would never say anything of the sort.
“I know it wasn’t that because I wouldn’t use that type of language,” said Griner.
Subsequently, Travis took to social media following Zaksheske’s questioning of Griner and pointed out the amount of time between the incident and the line of questioning.
“No one else in the WNBA media has asked Griner about this video for weeks. Interesting that she specifically remembers that play and situation, but nothing about the viral video,” said Travis on X. “How do you think sports media would respond if a white player has a mega viral video where it appeared she used a racial slur against black women and then when asked about it said she didn’t remember it?”
Furthermore, the credential granted by the Atlanta Dream was not the first approval by the WNBA for OutKick. Travis noted earlier this month that OutKick had been granted credentials in the past but hadn’t received any since the Griner video made waves online.
