The 20th anniversary of Hurricane Katrina slamming into the Gulf Coast is this weekend, and WWL Radio in New Orleans has prepared a special broadcast to look back on those events.
Katrina…20 Years Later “remembers the tragedy, heartbreak, and catastrophe, and as we celebrate the victories, recovery, and progress two decades after” the Category 5 storm hit the area, the Audacy New Orleans news/talk brand says about the special.
During the hurricane, WWL Radio was one of the only media outlets that remained on the air and was the first to broadcast how much damage had been inflicted on the Louisiana city. The station’s coverage went on to win Edward R. Murrow and Marconi Radio Awards in 2006 and 2007.
As part of the special, WWL spoke to Newell Normand — who hosts middays on the station, and was working at the Sheriff’s Office of Jefferson Parish at the time of the event — as well as former host Garland Robinette, current host Bobby Hebert, former New Orleans Saint running back Deuce McAllister, and several others to recount their experiences and how far the city has come since that event.
