One day after being shot and killed during an appearance at Utah Valley University, President Donald Trump has announced that Charlie Kirk will be awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom.
Early Thursday, while attending a 9/11 memorial service, Trump stated that he will award Kirk with the honor later this year.
“I can only guarantee you one thing: We will have a very big crowd, very, very big,” said Trump.
He began his remarks on the 24th anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks by addressing the slaying of Kirk.
“Before we begin, let me express the horror and grief so many Americans at the heinous assassination of Charlie Kirk have felt. Charlie was a giant of his generation, a champion of liberty and an inspiration to millions and millions of people,” Trump said.
“Our prayers are with his wonderful wife, Erika, and his beautiful children — fantastic people they are,” Trump continued. “We miss him greatly, yet I have no doubt that Charlie’s voice and the courage he put into the hearts of countless people, especially young people, will live on.”
Charlie Kirk will not be the first conservative radio host to earn the Presidential Medal of Freedom from Trump. In 2020, he famously gave the award to Rush Limbaugh during the State of the Union Address. Additionally, President Trump has announced he’ll also honor former New York mayor and former 77 WABC radio host Rudy Giuliani with the top civilian honor.
