Podcast listeners are becoming less politically predictable as Republicans gain ground and independents expand their share. New data from Signal Hill Insights shows the audience increasingly resembles the broader U.S. population ahead of the 2026 midterm elections.
What We Know: Signal Hill Insights President/CEO Paul Riismandel examined political affiliation trends through Demos+, a quarterly study conducted with Triton Digital that surveys more than 3,000 monthly podcast consumers. In 2022, Democrats represented 39% of monthly podcast listeners, compared with 28% of the general population. By 2025, Democrats, Republicans, and independents each accounted for 33% of podcast listeners. However, the latest data suggests another shift is underway as independents gain ground.
What The Numbers Show: Third-quarter 2026 data shows 33% of monthly podcast listeners identify as Democrats, while 29% identify as Republicans. Independents account for 39%, up from 36% in the first quarter. Meanwhile, the share identifying as Republicans fell from 31% during that period. Podcast consumption has also expanded, with 48% of Americans aged 12 and older listening monthly in 2025, up from 38% in 2022.
What Remains Unclear: The data doesn’t establish why the political composition of podcast listeners has changed. However, Vidler points to the growth of podcasts appealing to Republicans and increased discovery among conservative audiences. It’s also unclear whether podcasts will influence the 2026 midterms as significantly as the 2024 presidential election.
What It Means: Podcasting’s political audience now more closely mirrors the broader population, creating opportunities for publishers across the political spectrum. According to Signal Hill Insights and Voxtopica research, 63% of registered voter listeners agreed that podcasts change their opinions on news and current events. Additionally, one in four likely voters who consume podcasts said a candidate’s appearance could make them more likely to vote for that candidate. With independents representing the largest share of listeners, neither party has a clear advantage.
