Amy Poehler added another milestone to her entertainment resume Sunday night, capturing the first-ever Golden Globe Award for Best Podcast and further cementing podcasting’s arrival on one of Hollywood’s biggest stages.
Poehler earned the inaugural honor for Good Hang With Amy Poehler, a conversational comedy podcast produced by Paper Kite Productions in partnership with The Ringer. While the show debuted less than a year ago, it quickly gained traction. It did so by leaning into Poehler’s longstanding relationships across television, film, and comedy.
Accepting the award, Poehler acknowledged her relative newcomer status in the medium while expressing admiration for fellow nominees.
“I just want to say that I know I’m new to this game and have great respect for this form. I have great respect for all the people that I am nominated with,” Poehler said in her acceptance speech. “I’m big fans of all of you – except for NPR! Just a bunch of celebs phoning it in. Try harder!”
The win marked a full-circle Golden Globes moment for Poehler, who has long been associated with the ceremony. In addition to multiple acting nominations for her work on Parks and Recreation, she previously served as a four-time co-host alongside Fey. This year, however, she was recognized not for acting. Instead, she was honored for translating comedic chemistry into an audio-first format.
Poehler framed the podcast as a response to challenging times. She described it as an effort to foster connection, kindness, and shared laughter. She emphasized the joy behind the project and thanked listeners for allowing the team to continue producing new episodes.
The award was presented by Snoop Dogg, who used his stage time to acknowledge the momentum behind podcasting as a medium.
The Golden Globes also leaned into the moment with a pre-recorded sketch hosted by ceremony emcee Nikki Glaser. The segment parodied movie theater advertising while spotlighting podcast culture, weaving in clips and fictional ad interruptions involving other nominees. Cameos from well-known podcast figures added to the industry-insider humor.
Nominees for Best Podcast included Armchair Expert With Dax Shepard, Call Her Daddy, Smartless, The Mel Robbins Podcast, and NPR’s Up First. According to the Globes, the category was selected from a larger pool of eligible submissions, identified with assistance from data partner Luminate.
