Hugh Douglas To Be Inducted Into the Philadelphia Sports Hall of Fame

0

Philadelphia sports radio host and former NFL standout Hugh Douglas will receive one of the city’s highest honors later this year. Douglas is set to be inducted into the Philadelphia Sports Hall of Fame on November 5 at the Event Center at Live! Casino and Hotel Philadelphia.

Fellow Sportsradio 94 WIP host Joe DeCamara will serve as master of ceremonies. The announcement was revealed during a guest appearance by Kay Magee, a trustee of the Philadelphia Sports Hall of Fame.

“Thank you very much. This is a huge honor to be in the Philadelphia Sports Hall of Fame,” said Douglas following the announcement.

Douglas has long maintained a strong connection with the city, even beyond his playing days. He noted the support he received early on left a lasting impression.

“To come here and have people know who I was, even before I played here, that was special,” he said. “The love I’ve gotten since coming back has meant a lot.”

The former defensive end built an impressive NFL career spanning a decade. He entered the league as the 16th overall pick in the 1995 NFL Draft by the New York Jets and quickly made an impact. Douglas earned NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year honors from both the Associated Press and the Pro Football Writers of America.

He later became a key figure for the Philadelphia Eagles, where he earned three Pro Bowl selections from 2000 through 2002. Douglas also spent time with the Jacksonville Jaguars during his career.

After retiring, Douglas transitioned into broadcasting. He contributed to several Philadelphia television outlets before joining ESPN in 2011 as an NFL studio analyst. Douglas later spent multiple years in Atlanta sports radio before making his return to Philadelphia in 2023.

He now co-hosts the midday show on SportsRadio 94 WIP alongside Joe Giglio.

Mark Jones Reportedly Departing ESPN Following His Final NBA Call on Sunday

0

Longtime ESPN play-by-play announcer Mark Jones is set to call his final game for the network this weekend, according to a report from The Athletic. Jones’ last broadcast is scheduled for Sunday, bringing an end to a tenure that spans more than three decades.

He originally joined ESPN in 1990 and quickly became a versatile voice across multiple sports properties.

Over the years, Jones handled play-by-play duties for the NBA, college football and, more recently, the UFL. Additionally, he contributed to coverage of the WNBA and both men’s and women’s college basketball, further establishing himself as one of the network’s most reliable broadcasters.

His work extended beyond basketball. Jones called a variety of events for ABC, including college football and international competitions. He also covered the World Track and Field Championships in both Stuttgart and Gothenburg during the 1990s.

Earlier in his career, Jones played a prominent role in the network’s marquee NBA coverage. He hosted SportsCenter segments surrounding the NBA Finals during two separate stretches and also handled play-by-play responsibilities for the 2011 NBA Finals on ESPN 3D.

Beyond that, he contributed to coverage of All-Star Weekend events and the NBA Draft.

Before arriving at ESPN, Jones built his foundation in Canada. He worked for The Sports Network in Toronto, where he served as a sports desk anchor and hosted a program focused on the Toronto Blue Jays.

A Toronto native, Jones attended York University, where he played basketball and earned All-Conference honors. He later received the school’s Bryden Award, recognizing leadership and achievement. Jones also represented Canada in international basketball competition.

ESPN has not confirmed the news of Jones departure, and how the ESPN broadcast teams will adjust for the upcoming postseason play.

WTCM 580 Morning Hosts Ron Jolly, Colleen Wares Retire

0

After 12 years together on the air, WTCM 580 morning hosts Ron Jolly and Colleen Wares retired on Friday from the Traverse City news/talk station.

The duo hosted from 7-10 AM. Jolly began hosting morning drive on the station in November 1994, making him the longest-running host of a radio show in Northern Michigan.

Wares joined the station in 1979 before departing in 1983. In 1986, she returned, working with Jolly in the station’s newsroom for three years. They were reunited in 2014 and ultimately decided to retire together.

“The hardest part is leaving. We can’t see you, you can’t see us, but we are connected,” Jolly said of their retirement.

Following their final show together, Jolly and Wares met with listeners at a nearby brewery.

The celebration for Jolly and Wares was a somber one, however, as Vic McCarty — who followed the morning show on WTCM 580 — died earlier this week after a battle with stage four metastatic cancer.

FOX Sports Adds Javier “Chicharito” Hernández to World Cup 2026 Coverage

0

FOX Sports is adding international star power to its FIFA World Cup 2026 coverage. The network announced that Javier Hernández, widely known as “Chicharito,” will join its broadcast team as a studio analyst for the tournament.

FOX Sports President and Executive Producer Brad Zager revealed the move ahead of Mexico’s opening match against South Africa on June 11.

Hernández brings significant credibility to the role. He remains Mexico’s all-time leading scorer, totaling 52 goals in 109 appearances with the national team. He also represented El Tri in three World Cups, finding the net in each tournament from 2010 through 2018.

Zager said the addition aligns with FOX Sports’ strategy of building a globally recognizable roster. He noted that Mexico’s prominent role in the 2026 event made it essential to include voices closely tied to the country’s soccer identity. Hernández, he added, offers both name recognition and firsthand tournament experience.

For Hernández, the move marks a transition from the pitch to the studio.

“When the opportunity came to join a great company like FOX Sports and cover the FIFA World Cup™ this summer, it was a no brainer,” said Hernández. “I’m a rookie, so I expect to have fun as an analyst and learn, but really I just want to share my perspective on how I see the beautiful game and sport that I’ve been playing my entire life with fans watching at home.”

The forward’s professional career spans nearly two decades. He played for several top clubs around the world, including Manchester United, Real Madrid CF and West Ham United. Hernández also spent time with Sevilla FC and Bayer Leverkusen.

In 2020, he made the jump to Major League Soccer, signing with the LA Galaxy. During his tenure in Los Angeles, Hernández scored 38 goals in 74 regular-season appearances, becoming one of the league’s most recognizable names.

He joins an already high-profile FOX Sports lineup. The network previously announced additions such as Thierry Henry and Zlatan Ibrahimović, along with veteran host Rebecca Lowe. More on-air talent is expected to be revealed in the months leading up to the tournament.

FOX Sports will carry all 104 matches of the expanded competition. Coverage will air across FOX and FS1, with every match also available to stream in 4K on the network’s digital platforms.

The 2026 edition will be the largest in World Cup history. For the first time, three countries — the United States, Mexico and Canada — will serve as hosts. The tournament will feature 48 teams competing across 16 cities, including 11 venues in the United States.

Jim Chones Stepping Down From Cleveland Cavaliers Radio After 17 Seasons

0

Veteran broadcaster Jim Chones will step away from his role as lead analyst on the Cleveland Cavaliers Radio Network at the conclusion of the current NBA season, capping an 18-year run in the position and a career in broadcasting that spans nearly three decades.

Chones confirmed the decision during an appearance on WTAM 1100, describing the move as part of a broader transition rather than a departure from the organization.

“It is a transition,” Chones said. “I’ll be doing other things, you know, in partnership with the Cavs and other parts and other relationships.”

He added that his future plans will reflect the evolving nature of the sport and its connection to fans beyond the court.

“What I’ve learned over the years is that basketball has changed,” Chones said via WTAM 1100. “Basketball is a social network. There’s a lot of other things that contribute, projects and to the viewing of the team. That’s only a small part of it. I want to be in partnership with the Cavs and develop other projects and try to be a part of that.”

Chones has served as the team’s lead radio analyst since 2007. During that time, he became a consistent and recognizable voice for Cavaliers fans. His tenure included multiple playoff runs and the franchise’s 2016 championship season.

Before moving to radio, Chones spent 11 seasons as a television color analyst for the team. That experience helped shape a style rooted in clarity and perspective. He focused on explaining the game in a way that resonated with both seasoned fans and newcomers.

Chones’ connection to the Cavaliers extends well beyond broadcasting. A standout at Marquette University, he earned All-America honors in 1972 after averaging 20.5 points and 11.9 rebounds per game. He then became one of the earliest players to leave college early for the professional ranks.

The 6-foot-11 center began his pro career in the American Basketball Association with the New York Nets and Carolina Cougars. He joined Cleveland in 1974 and appeared in 400 games across five seasons. During his tenure, the team reached the Eastern Conference finals. He later played for the Los Angeles Lakers and won an NBA championship in 1979.

After retiring in 1982, Chones transitioned into broadcasting. He steadily built a reputation for preparation and professionalism. His work on both television and radio made him a fixture in the Cavaliers’ coverage for decades.

While Chones will leave the lead analyst chair, his comments suggest he will remain involved with the organization in new ways. The Cavaliers have not yet announced plans for a successor.

ABC News Names John Schlosberg Executive Producer of This Week with George Stephanopoulos

0

ABC News has announced it has named Jon Schlosberg as the Executive Producer of This Week with George Stephanopoulos.

Schlosberg will lead all aspects of the Sunday public affairs program. He originally joined ABC News in 2018 as a producer on the network’s streaming platform, ABC News Live. Since 2021, he has served as the senior producer for the platform’s Prime with Linsey Davis newscast.

“Jon is a tenacious journalist and exceptional leader who has been instrumental across the ABC News Group for more than a decade, bringing precision, creativity and integrity to some of the most consequential stories of our time,” said ABC News Washington Bureau Chief Rick Klein.

“His sharp political instincts, deep experience in linear as well as streaming television, and proven ability to build winning teams make him exactly the right person to lead This Week into its next chapter,” concluded Klein.

Prior to joining the outlet, he worked for the company-owned TV station in San Francisco — KGO-TV — and at WVUE-TV in New Orleans.

Schlosberg will officially begin his duties on Wednesday, May 6th.

Trey Wingo: ESPN Attempting to Hype ‘The Masters’ Is Risking the Broadcast Rights to the Tournament

0

Former ESPN anchor/host Trey Wingo is urging ESPN to tread carefully with its coverage of The Masters, warning that overcomplicating the presentation could come at a cost. During a recent discussion, Wingo took issue with elements of the network’s expanded approach.

He argued that certain additions feel unnecessary for an event that has long thrived on simplicity and tradition.

“It’s The Masters. It doesn’t need hype,” Wingo said, criticizing what he described as excessive features surrounding coverage like the Par 3 Contest.

He also questioned the strategy of trying to broaden the audience for a product that already dominates television golf. According to Wingo, the tournament’s built-in appeal should guide programming decisions rather than efforts to chase incremental viewers.

“Your audience is there. The idea of appealing to a wider audience. You can’t cut off your base to find somebody else” he said. “Know who you’re talking to, and know who you’re sending this out for. Know who’s going to be watching it. When you turn on the people that matter the most about the thing that you’re putting out there, you have lost the proposition.”

That point underscores a larger concern. Wingo believes leaning too far into experimentation risks alienating loyal fans who expect a certain tone from Masters coverage. While ESPN and other networks often look to innovate, he suggested that approach can backfire when it clashes with audience expectations.

At the same time, Wingo made clear his criticism is not rooted in negativity toward ESPN. In fact, he expressed strong support for the network’s golf team and its long-term relationship with Augusta National.

“I want ESPN to be incredibly successful. I want them to continue to have The Masters for as long as they want it,” Wingo said. “When it’s left to their own devices, and the people that do golf, they’re great. It’s all the other crap, for lack of a better term, that’s being shoved down golf viewers throats. That is [what’s] turning people away”

More notably, Wingo warned that pushing too far could have broader implications. The Masters remains one of the most tightly controlled properties in sports, and its organizers have historically prioritized consistency.

Wingo went on to reference the value of the rights agreement. He added that feedback does not go unnoticed. Augusta National, he said, is likely aware of how coverage decisions are being received by fans and media observers alike.

“Why are you trying to gain, tangentially, some fringe viewers. While at the same time you are taking your core viewers and pissing them off,” said Wingo. “It’s not just users on Twitter. It’s not just the Hollywood Reporter. You can be in danger of losing the thing that you hold most dear, the rights to this tournament.”

The comments arrive at a time when networks continue to search for ways to maximize major rights deals. Expanded shoulder programming and digital content have become common across sports. Yet The Masters remains a unique case, built on tradition and careful presentation.

“Let the Masters speak for itself. It doesn’t need all this hyperbolic nonsense. It’s the freaking Masters,” said Wingo. “That’s why, for years, ESPN did everything they could to get the rights, because they knew it was the most important tournament in golf to have on your network. Don’t piss these guys off, especially in a situation where more layoffs are coming at ESPN.”

His message is simple. Respect the audience, respect the tournament and avoid doing too much with a product that already works.
