Colin Cowherd Talks Future of Broadcasting Rights with FOX President of Insights and Analytics, Mike Mulvihill

0

Colin Cowherd talked with FOX President of Insights and Analytics, Mike Mulvihill on the most recent episode of The Colin Cowherd Podcast. Football was the main topic that came up as the two discussed where broadcasting rights are headed in the age of cord cutting.

Cowherd pointed out that not only is the NFL the dominant player in sports television, but that it is college football which has become the second most-watched sport in America.

Mulvihill responded, “Not only was viewership up last year, you can go a step further, viewership for college football last year was the highest it has ever been, so this is the most-watched college football season ever. I do think that there’s been a nationalization of interest which will be enhanced by the West Coast teams coming to the Big 10.”

Cowherd and Mulvihill went on to discuss how games are chosen by networks and that in a couple of weeks they will have a draft of games. Mulvihill said with all that is happening in college football realignment, “there are games that are on the draft board this year that in the old Big 10, you might have thought ‘this is the second or third best game in the pool.’ This year, those games might not go until sixth, seventh, eighth, ninth. The depth of quality games, the number of quality games I would be comfortable putting in a FOX Noon window, our showcase window, there’s at least 40 or 50 games like that.”

He continued saying he would assume it is the exact same way at the Disney offices when ESPN is looking at their SEC schedule of games with Oklahoma and Texas now a part of the SEC. “The depth of great games in those two conferences is just extraordinary,” Mulvihill said.

Cowherd mentioned the days when people wondered when the inflation of sports broadcasting rights would end and pointed to those negotiations now including streaming services such as Amazon and Apple. He asked Mulvihill to talk about the erosion of cable television and how it will play into future sports broadcasting negotiations.

“…Sports content has, in some way, been subsidized by non-sports fans who pay for cable TV,” he said. “…What we have always seen in sports is a rising number of pay-TV subscribers and more people paying for content. So, the pool of money that’s available to us in sports has grown and grown and grown…Entertainment viewers are figuring out they can get the content they want from streaming platforms and so fewer and fewer non-sports fans are paying for sports content. That era of subsidization is either coming to an end or its already over. That pool that we have to pay for sports rights, is going to contract and forces all of [the networks] to be a little bit more disciplined in our deal making and in the way we consider rights opportunities.”

Mulvihill pointed out that cable subscriptions used to be nearly 100 million and is now closer to 70 million. “I believe most of the people that are getting out of the pay-TV bundle, they’re not really big sports fans, they’re people who were subscribing to cable for entertainment content,” he added.

With everything going on and eyeballs moving platforms, it is fairly remarkable that at the same time, sports viewership is rising. Cowherd and Mulvihill talked about FS1 being up 7% and Mulvihill named ESPN, live events with the NFL and college football and added women’s college basketball and, recently, NASCAR as properties that are seeing groth. “There’s a lot out there that is growing,” Mulvihill said.

In summation, Mulvihill said, “I think when we talk about the power of sports on television, what we are often really talking about is the power of football. Football has sort of become a stand-in for the strength of the sports business in general.”

He added that as it relates to FOX, “We really identify with football. That’s what we build our brand on. We are very much aligned with the fortunes of the game. What’s good for football is kind of good for FOX. That’s probably where our investments are going to continue to be, predominantly.”

77 WABC Host Sid Rosenberg Attending State of the Union As Guest of NY Congressman

0

77 WABC morning host Sid Rosenberg hosted his show from Washington D.C. Thursday morning, as he’ll be in attendance at President Biden’s State of the Union address as the guest of Rep. Anthony D’Esposito (R-NY).

Earlier this week, D’Esposito asked Rosenberg to be his guest at the event, which the 77 WABC host accepted with grace.

“On a very serious note, it’s a huge honor. I don’t know what I did to deserve it, other than being the most important radio host in the world, but I really appreciate it. From the bottom of my heart,” Rosenberg said. “Thank you so much.”

When the representative said he hopes Rosenberg has a “great experience and a memorable one”, the New York host joked he’d be a rabble-rouser at the event.

“You’ll never be able to go back again, of course, because when the Secret Service hauls me out, and they find out you invited me, that’ll be done for you,” Rosenberg said with a loud chuckle.

“We’ll deal with that Friday,” D’Esposito joked.

Sid Rosenberg has long been a vocal critic of President Biden’s but said the opportunity was too good to pass up.

CBS Sports Launches New Basketball Podcast ‘Beyond the Arc’; Could NBA Games Return to CBS?

0

CBS Sports has a new NBA podcast launching soon — could it be a harbinger of the future for the NBA’s upcoming rights deal? On Monday, Mar. 11, CBS Sports debuts Beyond the Arc, a new daily show and podcast covering all things NBA featuring co-hosts Ashley Nicole Moss, Bill Reiter, and John Gonzalez and CBS Sports basketball contributor Avery Johnson. Reiter and Gonzalez posted the news via their X accounts:

Each weekday at 2:00 PM, ET, Beyond the Arc will stream live on YouTube and be made available on all podcast platforms. The show will offer insider news and analysis, and break down all of the league’s biggest storylines with the playoffs on the horizon.

A new NBA podcast as part of a platform that hasn’t featured NBA games since 1990 may be a bit peculiar — but the NBA’s current rights deal expires at the end of the 2024-25 season. CBS may be making a move to add NBA games to its existing basketball portfolio which already includes the NCAA March Madness tournament and WNBA games. Becoming the NBA’s third broadcast partner could sync well with CBS’ current sports offerings and the NBA’s desire to stream games, of which CBS has extensive experience with Paramount+.

Grace Curley: I Get Criticized For Focusing Too Much on Media Stories

1

MSNBC hosts Jen Psaki and Rachel Maddow received widespread criticism for a quip made during the network’s Super Tuesday coverage, with Boston-based host Grace Curley turning her ire toward the cable news stars.

During The Grace Curley Show Wednesday, the host argued she has tried to stay away from media topics in recent weeks.

“Sometimes I get criticism for focusing too much on the media. And, definitely, it’s where I go. We oftentimes will talk about Howie (Carr) loves Whitey (Bulger), and he loves crime. I do love, to a degree, to follow what these people are saying because I think they’re so crazy and they’re so insane,” said Curley. “I’ve been trying to bring a little balance to it and not focus on it too much.”

However, she said the interaction between the MSNBC hosts was too much for her to ignore.

“This one I can’t resist. I’ve got to talk about it because there’s an element here of arrogance and condescension that I think can be, fingers crossed, so deadly in politics,” Curley continued. “I think when you start treating people like you’re better than them, or they’re stupid, or they’re dumb and they don’t follow things like you do, and they’re not in the loop, I think it can backfire in a big way.”

After playing the clip of Psaki and Maddow laughing about Virginia sharing a border with West Virginia, Curley took aim at the two MSNBC hosts.

“Really nice stuff from the people at MSNBC,” said Curley, sarcastically. “They’re always wondering, ‘Why doesn’t anyone watch our programming? Why does anyone like us? Does everyone think we’re obnoxious?’

“Do you have a mirror? Do you ever watch your shows back?,” she concluded.

Chris Cuomo Hosting Tucker Carlson for Sit-Down Conversation on NewsNation

0

Tucker Carlson has long been a vocal critic of former CNN and current NewsNation host Chris Cuomo. Now, the two will sit down to reconcile their differences in a made-for-TV conversation.

Cuomo recently traveled to Florida for a conversation between the two cable news stars, which will air Monday, March 11th at 8 PM ET on his NewsNation program, a report from Variety claims.

Despite their differences, the two — at least professionally — have much in common. Both were unceremoniously dumped by their cable news homes, with Cuomo being ousted by CNN in 2022 and Carlson following in 2023. Chris Cuomo subsequently joined NewsNation, while Carlson hosts a program on various digital platforms, namely the Elon Musk-owned X.

The discussion will mark the first time Tucker Carlson has spoken on national TV since departing Fox News last April.

Rich Zeoli: There’s No Way Joe Scarborough Believes What He Says on MSNBC

0

MSNBC morning host Joe Scarborough made an impassioned speech defending President Joe Biden earlier this week, calling the 81-year-old leader “the best Biden ever”. 1210 WPHT afternoon host Rich Zeoli wonders if Scarborough is being truthful.

While discussing the current President on Morning Joe, Scarborough shared his belief that the President is as great as he’s ever been, while detractors argue he is not mentally competent for office.

“I’m about to tell you the truth. And eff you if you can’t handle the truth, this version of Biden intellectually, analytically, is the best Biden ever,” said Scarborough. “Not a close second and I’ve known him for years.”

In response, Zeoli questioned the authenticity of Scarborough’s claims.

“Joe Scarborough went full on North Korea state TV today defending Joe Biden, even dropping the F-bomb. I mean, the sheer passion in his voice as he comes out and just tries to make everybody believe what he’s saying here,” The Rich Zeoli Show host said. “There’s no way he can believe this, right? This is something he had to say in his contract or something. They made him say this.

Zeoli then likened the comments made by the MSNBC host to a situation in his profession.

“I gotta promote the stupid Audacy app. Like, I have to do that. The dumb app, I have to say that, in my contract. Is it like Daddy Scarborough has to come out and he’s got to say this about Joe Biden? Because this sounds like something that he was required to read,” Zeoli quipped. “Like maybe they were holding his children hostage or something. I don’t know. But he can’t possibly believe this.”

Kevin Harlan to Jim Rome: “I Like the Chance to Do Even Better the Next Game”

0

In the 304th edition of his podcast, Jim Rome welcomed broadcasting great Kevin Harlan. Harlan is in one of the busiest stretches of his broadcasting year and described his current route to Rome.

“We’re heading in to the home stretch of the college basketball season with the NBA playoffs right around the corner,” Harlan said. “So, we leave the Super Bowl, we go to the NBA All-Star game, finish up with March Madness with CBS and TNT and then right into the NBA Playoffs. So, it’s a busy time of year, but a lot of fun.”

Noting all those great assignments Harlan gets with CBS, TNT and Westwood One, Rome asked, “How much does it mean to you continue to get such prestigious, marquee assignments, given how long you’ve been in this game?”

“It’s an honor, clearly, Jim,” replied Harlan. “Everytime you get a game with my employers…I’m always very thankful. I don’t necessarily look at the quality of the game I have ahead of me, but I do really pay attention to my own personal work and try to give them the best that I can.”

The conversation turned to the preparation involved in major national broadcasting assignments as well as how much critiquing of his own work Harlan does.

“The preparation that goes in to those broadcasts is pretty significant…it’s basically seven days a week,” Harlan said. “But, we love the business, I think we all feel very fortunate to be in the business and we take it as personal pride to do our best everytime we go on the air.”

Harlan mentioned a recent college basketball game he did which featured two teams which both had about .500 records. He noted you still have to bring it on the broadcast and those games can be a little more challenging than a major event featuring two top teams. But, the answer is always preparation.

“Doing the Super Bowl is pretty easy,” Harlan said. “That is a game which doesn’t need any build up, you just hope your own performance is up to the task. I would say that more times than not, I’ll listen back and give it a check…all in all you’re pretty pleased. Preparation takes a lot of the down side away. Preparation takes a lot of the anxiousness away. Preparation certainly is a key, but at the end of the day…it’s all about how you sound, your performance, your delivery on game day. So that’s what I really cherish the most, that challenge to be the best I can be every broadcast.”

Rome asked Harlan, who will turn 64 in June, whether he still listens back to his broadcasts. His answer may surprise some.

“Every game,” he said. “Every single game and I think if you don’t, you are robbing yourself of a chance to improve, personally and individually. I feel that a lot of my career has been based on self-improvement and I like to think I am evolving season to season and year to year and I like that challenge. I like the business of broadcasting and I like the chance to do even better the next game.”

Harlan and his wife have four kids, three daughters and a son. He said he told his kids they have gotten to see the very best of broadcasting with his career. They never had to move and he has kept his jobs. He used that to try and talk his kids out of wanting to be in the broadcasting business. As he described, three of his children listened and one, his youngest daughter, “gave him the Heisman” and entered the field.

Olivia Harlan Dekker is as the sideline reporter and host for Sky Sports, which televises the NFL in the United Kingdom. This year, Kevin and Olivia became the first father-daughter combo to call and cover a Super Bowl, repeating the history they made as the first dad-daughter combo in the regular season and playoffs. Kevin Harlan was calling his 15th Super Bowl while Olivia was working her first. Harlan Dekker married a former NBA player (Sam Dekker) who is now playing overseas. While living in Europe, Harlan Dekker was hired by SkySports, their version of ESPN.

Talking about his daughter and getting to work the Super Bowl together, Harlan said, “It was really a gratifying experience watching her work, in that arena, at the very top of her game. I continue to be very, very proud of her.”

Report: Stephen A. Smith, Pat McAfee Have ‘Explosive’ Phone Argument Over Creative Differences

0

Not since Hulk Hogan and Jeff Jarrett at Bash at the Beach 2000 have we seen two titans within the same company feud so fiercely — but at least the latest ESPN-vs.-ESPN spat wasn’t live on pay-per-view. According to the New York Post’s Ryan Glasspiegel, Stephen A. Smith and Pat McAfee had a private conversation that turned ugly over creative differences on an unnamed project that Stephen. A will produce through his production company, Mr. SAS Productions.

Allegedly, McAfee called Smith a “motherf*****r” at one point during the call. Glasspiegel said the argument caused Smith to ban McAfee from appearing on First Take, but that ban was since lifted once cooler heads prevailed. The Post reached out to both McAfee and Smith who said any animosity between the two has since been resolved.

“I have nothing but love for Stephen A.,” McAfee said in a text message to The Post. “I think I’m still welcome on First Take? I was scheduled through football season to join on Tuesdays, hopefully next year that’ll happen as well.” Smith had much more to say about McAfee and his status on First Take:

“Pat McAfee and I have no issue and the notion that he’d be banned from First Take is B.S. We are No.1 and he has absolutely contributed to us remaining No.1. McAfee was asked to come on each Tuesday through the Super Bowl and he did just that, kicking ass each time he came on the air. If McAfee wants to be on First Take next season, he will be on First Take. I love winners and McAfee has proven he wins  — which helps ME win. I don’t know how many times I have to tell folks that he’s trail-blazed a path into a new era for so many of us. I’m grateful to have him as a part of my team and the ESPN Family. And I’m looking forward to having him on for years to come. I sincerely hope that I will not have to repeat myself on this nonsense again!”

Stephen A. Smith via the New York post

The pair have been outwardly kind to each other in the past and Stephen A. has been appreciative of the money McAfee and his show have earned — because it will impact his upcoming contract renewal. McAfee and his crew signed a five-year, nearly $85 million deal to bring the show to ESPN platforms. Smith may shatter expectations with his upcoming deal, according to Dan Le Batard.

X Usage Drops 30% Since Elon Musk Purchase, New Edison Research Study Shows

0

Billionaire Elon Musk bought then-Twitter, which he has since rebranded as X, in the fall of 2022. Usage of that social media platform has dropped noticeably since that purchase.

As part of its Infinite Dial report, Edison Research shows that in both 2022 and 2023, 27% of the U.S. population claimed to use the social media platform. However, that figure has dropped to just 19% in 2024, the report says.

“While The Infinite Dial has recorded many incremental changes over its long history, a 30% change in any metric year-over-year is incredibly rare and noteworthy,” the company said.

The company does note that in 2022 and 2023 those surveyed were asked whether they were users of “Twitter”, while the rebranded “X” was used for respondents in 2024.

Respondents also showed a decline in both monthly and weekly usage of the Elon Musk-owned platform.
