Dan Le Batard: I Think Stephen A. Smith is About to ‘Shake the Industry With His Next Contract’

0

ESPN morning program First Take continues to finish at the top of the television ratings, recently completing its most-watched year ever with an average of 496,000 viewers. The program has attained 19 consecutive months of year-over-year growth and continues to grow its digital media presence on YouTube and other social media platforms. Featured commentator and executive producer Stephen A. Smith appears on the show regularly alongside host Molly Qerim, both of whom are joined by a rotation of commentators and analysts who contribute to debates and discussions. Outside of First Take, Smith also hosts his podcast, The Stephen A. Smith Show, which is produced by his production company, Mr. SAS Productions, and distributed by iHeartMedia’s podcast network.

Last year, Meadowlark Media co-founder and host Dan Le Batard welcomed Smith onto his program, The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz, to discuss facets of the sports media industry. A central point of the discussion surrounded Smith’s role in promoting debate culture through his work on ESPN with Skip Bayless. In the past, Le Batard has conveyed that he believes Smith is building something outside of ESPN, calling First Take an “infomercial” for what he is going to do next. In addition to The Stephen A. Smith Show podcast, Smith’s production company has been greenlit to produce a docuseries called Up for Debate and a drama series outside of ESPN and The Walt Disney Company.

Smith has expressed numerous times that he feels he is underpaid for his work at ESPN and that the deal the network inked with Pat McAfee to license his show does not bother him. Le Batard believes that Smith knows his worth to the network and has more power than ever before. In comparing and contrasting Smith and Bayless, Le Batard shared that while they make the same amount of money, Smith’s production company is an aspect of what he is working to build.

“It’s going to be powerful and impressive whether he does it with ESPN or outside of ESPN because Stephen A. Smith wants to play with Tom Brady and Peyton Manning in the sphere of, ‘I’m as big a star in sports right now as there is. I’m a media star and I’m at my company and I’m underpaid,’” Le Batard expressed. “He’s going to have an ability to get power here because he brought in Shannon Sharpe too; he carried him over.”

Smith advocated for Shannon Sharpe to join First Take as a contributor after the end of his time with FOX Sports 1 (FS1) on Undisputed. In addition to joining ESPN on this basis, Sharpe also inked a deal with Colin Cowherd’s sports media company, The Volume, to host his Club Shay Shay podcast and develop new programming under the aegis of Shay Shay Media. While there, Sharpe launched the Nightcap podcast with Chad “Ochocinco” Johnson and Gilbert Arenas with timely, insightful and entertaining discussion about collegiate and professional sports.

“We’re watching the end of Skip Bayless because those numbers are so bad, Stugotz – we were doing twice those numbers on ESPNEWS,” Le Batard said, referring to the ratings for Undisputed. “He’s coming to the end of his contract and Nick Wright is here to have the money that FOX has to offer, and Colin Cowherd’s going to do whatever he wants with him and his company and Shannon Sharpe, and they’re going to compete at the top of the game – the sports media games and the athlete games at the top of the business.”

Le Batard believes that Smith and Sharpe are in the midst of changing the sports media landscape and have liberty to build whatever they want. It is unknown whether he and Sharpe will collaborate in a business venture outside of ESPN or continue working separately. Nonetheless, Le Batard understands the trials and tribulations they have had to overcome throughout their careers to successfully build their own brands and garner ostensible leverage in the sports media industry.

“Skip Bayless created an economy; Stephen A. Smith buried it,” Le Batard said. “He’s super-competitive, he’s a conqueror and he’s getting bigger than he’s ever been. What is about to happen is he is about to, I think, shake the industry with his next contract and should because he’s a ratings monster.”

Mets Broadcaster Howie Rose Cutting Back His Schedule on WCBS

0

Mets broadcaster Howie Rose told Newsday he will be cutting back his schedule again this season. Last year, Rose, who recently turned 70, did 125 games but plans to be around 100 this year. Rose started limiting his schedule in 2022 after missing time in 2021 after being diagnosed and treated for bladder cancer.

Rose also said he plans to call all of the home games and a select number of mostly close trips. He did also say the schedule was subject to change depending on where the Mets are in the standings later in the season. As for any postseason games, Rose told Neil Best, “Obviously, if they get to the postseason, I don’t care if they’re playing in Timbuktu, I’m doing those games.”

Synonymous with the Mets, Rose’s coverage of the team dates back more than three decades, when from 1987 – 1995 he worked for WFAN in various roles including as the host of Mets Extra. He later had a tenure as their TV announcer for FOX Sports Net New York and MSG.

Rose has done Mets games since 2004, following the team through their different broadcast partnerships with WFAN, WOR and now WCBS.

Rose’s broadcasting partner, Keith Raad, will work with Pat McCarthy, the third man on the Mets’ radio team, when Rose is out.

Holly Rowe, known mostly for her work with ESPN, is starting a new podcast. The show will be called “Call Your Mother,” and will feature Rowe with her son, McKylin.

Announcing the show on her X account, Rowe said, “How do you stay connected with your adult kids? For me and my son, we get together and laugh. “Call Your Mom” podcast drops tomorrow. Hope you enjoy.”

Rowe works as a sideline reporter for ESPN/ABC’s coverage of college football, including the College Football Playoffs, the WNBA, women’s college basketball, and the Women’s College World Series, among other high-profile assignments.

Rowe signed a long-term extension with ESPN last March and told The Athletic’s Richard Deitsch at the time of the announcement,“I feel like I am living my best life and I am so grateful to ESPN for letting me keep doing this.”

Rowe was named the 2023 Curt Gowdy Media Award winner from the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame for her electronic media work.

McKylin Rowe is a certified personal trainer and also an actor, who played a part in the film American Underdog about the story of Hall of Fame quarterback Kurt Warner.

Bret Baier Defends Himself From Criticsim After Laura Ingraham Praise of Donald Trump

0

Fox News presented extensive coverage of Super Tuesday, with anchor Bret Baier receiving criticism from some viewers for supposedly biting his lips while Laura Ingraham heaped praise on former President Donald Trump in the aftermath of his victory. He says that wasn’t the case at all.

One user on X posted a photo of Baier looking off to the side with his lips pursed together.

After that screenshot received more than 100,000 views on social media, Baier defended himself on the social media app.

“What does this show? I said the same thing later with Trace (Gallagher), I needed to get the chicken out of my teeth I ate during the commercial break,” Baire wrote. “But thanks for watching — closely.”

He subsequently posted a video of him echoing sentiments from Ingraham that Trump’s victory in the Republican primary is a “remarkable political comeback.”

When another user suggested the Fox News star is a “Trumper,” Bret Baier shot back “Or a complete obvious Never Trumper — or maybe just a news anchor.”

0

On Friday, March 8, ESPN will celebrate International Women’s Day with an all-women led NBA live game and studio broadcast as the Minnesota Timberwolves visit the Cleveland Cavaliers at 7:30 p.m. EST/4:30 p.m. PST. This will mark the third consecutive year that the network will present an all-women broadcast within its NBA coverage, which begins with NBA Today at 3 p.m. EST/12 p.m. PST.

Malika Andrews will host the show along with reporter Ramona Shelburne and analysts Chiney Ogwumike and Becky Hammon. They will be on the air again at 7 p.m. EST/4 p.m. EST on Friday night for NBA Countdown leading into the live game broadcast from Rocket Mortgage FieldHouse.

Beth Mowins will deliver the call of the game alongside color commentator Monica McNutt and sideline reporter Katie George. Mowins has been the play-by-play announcer for the two previous all-women broadcasts, which will also include a game production team led by women at ESPN. Some of the roles implemented in this initiative last year, as outlined by the network in a press release, include producer, director and statistics analyst among others.

Friday will mark the fifth time this season ESPN is using an all-women broadcast on the season. The network will have 175 women working on the network’s slate of games that day, many of whom work on its NBA coverage daily.

Following the Timberwolves-Cavaliers game, the network will present a matchup between the Milwaukee Bucks and Los Angeles Lakers from Crytpo.com Arena in downtown Los Angeles. Dave Pasch will be on the call for that game joined by color commentator Stephanie White and sideline reporter Cassidy Hubbarth.

The broadcast will commence at 10 p.m. EST/7 p.m. PST and feature a star-studded matchup between Bucks forward Giannis Antetokounmpo and Lakers forward LeBron James. The commentary team will remain in Los Angeles to commentate the Sunday night game between the Timberwolves and Lakers at 9:30 p.m. EST/6:30 p.m. PST.

Preceding that matchup is the Philadelphia 76ers’ tilt against the New York Knicks from Madison Square Garden, which will include Beth Mowins and Katie George on the broadcast along with color commentator Hubie Brown.

The Michael DelGiorno Show Adds 4 More Affiliates

0

After launching his show with iHeartMedia last October on a trio of stations, The Michael DelGiorno Show has been added to four more markets.

DelGiorno — who hosts from 6-9 AM ET — can now be heard on 600 WREC in Memphis, 1060 WKMQ in Tupelo, 570 WKBN in Youngstown, and 640 WHLO in Akron, according to a report from RadioInsight. All four stations are also owned by iHeartMedia.

The program originates from Talk Radio 98.3 in Nashville. DelGiorno was based in the city from 2007 until March 2023 at SuperTalk 99.7 WTN before exiting his midday program. When his show with iHeartMedia launched, it also debuted on Newsradio 1000 KTOK in Oklahoma City and 1300 The Patriot in Tulsa. He spent time in the Tulsa and Oklahoma City markets earlier in his career.

The four new stations airing the program are the latest expansion for DelGiorno. When the company flipped 1250 WHNZ in Tampa back to its former Impact Radio branding — moving away from Spanish news/talk — it added The Michael DelGiorno Show in morning drive.

Report: Peyton Manning Pursuing Bill Belichick for Omaha Productions

0

Andrew Marchand of The Athletic has reported Peyton Manning and Omaha Productions are interested in hiring former New England Patriots head coach Bill Belichick. Marchand’s reporting goes a step further and also says his sources are telling him, if Belichick does partner with Manning, there is a possibility of Omaha and ESPN partnering for a Bill Belichick and Nick Saban “Manningcast” type broadcast.

Bill Belichick and Jason Kelce are two names at the top of several outlet’s list of new talent to potentially bring in for football analysis. Nick Saban has already been hired by ESPN to work on College GameDay, the NFL Draft and other projects. Saban retired from coaching, however, several people close to Bill Belichick believe he is still planning to coach after taking this year off. So, signing Belichick could be a short-term plan for whichever outlet retains his services.

Marchand reports that Belichick has told networks he has met with that he is not interested in doing a weekly studio show. If a network is hesitant to give Belichick a prime seat in an NFL booth, perhaps the alternate broadcast route could make the most sense.

Omaha Productions collaborates with ESPN on the “Manningcast,” which features Peyton Manning and his brother Eli discussing the Monday Night Football game while interjecting guests into the conversation. The alternate broadcast debuted in September, 2021

Parkins & Spiegel Already Miss Jason Benetti in Chicago

0

Danny Parkins and Matt Spiegel, of 670 The Score in Chicago, couldn’t make it past one broadcast without missing former White Sox announcer Jason Benetti. Benetti made his Detroit Tigers broadcasting debut alongside Craig Monroe and Johnny Kane earlier this week in a Spring Training Game.

On the Tuesday edition of Parkins & Spiegel, the hosts hit on a hot topic in the Windy City, which is why Benetti is no longer calling White Sox games and chose instead to move, within the division, to Detroit.

Coming out of break, a clip was played of an old White Sox broadcast with Benetti and analyst Steve Stone talking about a sandwich served at the ballpark. Benetti took a bite of the sandwich on the air, which is really only notable because of things Benetti has said since his departure from Chicago.

Benetti had previously told Parkins and Spiegel that there were little things that he wasn’t such a fan of when it came to working with the White Sox, things like eating on camera or singing, but Benetti never pinpointed one specific thing as the reason why he decided to move to Detroit.

“I’m just saying all this to tell you all that it is super complicated and there were a ton of factors,” he said on 670 The Score in early December. “But in the end, it really is a thing that I felt like I was pulled to do.”

This week, when the clip was played, Spiegel jokingly said, “How dare you sell the experience and the product for a terrible organization…Get outta here.”

Parkins added Detroit wanted Benetti “…because they recognized his talent and his worth and they wanted to make him feel important.”

“They wanted to do a really good TV broadcast, do the Tigers, and they think a broadcaster should help to shape the TV broadcast,” Spiegel said. “…I do believe that the team should absolutely support and build the broadcast with the help of the broadcasters.”

After playing several clips of Benetti’s first Tigers game, the 670 The Score hosts both noticed something immediately. “How happy and excited did he sound to be there?,” asked Spiegel. “He sounds happy,” replied Parkins.

Benetti had been with the White Sox for eight seasons before he decided to take the position with the Tigers. The versatile play-by-play announcer, who also calls college football, college basketball and MLB games for FOX Sports, will call a minimum of 127 Tigers games each season, allowing him to continue his national broadcasting responsibilities.

Daily Wire co-founder Ben Shapiro has long been a mainstay in the conservative podcast realm. However, the syndicated radio host is rising up the podcast rankings in the month of February.
