Netflix Announces Ronda Rousey, Gina Carano Bout Coming In May

0

A long-anticipated showdown between two of the most recognizable figures in women’s mixed martial arts is officially set, as Ronda Rousey and Gina Carano will square off in a featherweight bout on May 16 at Intuit Dome in Los Angeles, with the event streaming exclusively on Netflix.

Most Valuable Promotions, the fighter-first promotion co-founded by Jake Paul and Nakisa Bidarian, confirmed the matchup Tuesday. The announcement marks the company’s first major move into MMA. Until now, it had focused on building a presence through high-profile boxing events.

While MVP built its brand by centering fighters and embracing streaming distribution, this announcement marks a strategic pivot. The company now aims to create a crossover spectacle. It hopes to attract longtime MMA fans. It also seeks to capture a broader entertainment audience.

Rousey returns to competition for the first time in nearly a decade, having last competed in the UFC following consecutive stoppage losses to Holly Holm and Amanda Nunes. During her hiatus from MMA, she transitioned to professional wrestling and became a featured performer in WWE, which expanded her mainstream visibility and further cemented her place as one of combat sports’ most influential stars.

Now, she returns to the cage on Netflix. She called it the biggest super fight in women’s combat sports history. She framed the bout as both a personal mission and a celebration of the sport’s evolution.

Carano, meanwhile, has not competed professionally since suffering her lone defeat to Cris Cyborg under the Strikeforce banner in 2009, yet she remained a central figure in the sport’s early rise and later built a successful acting career.

Recent training footage sparked speculation that a comeback could materialize, and that momentum culminated in Tuesday’s announcement.

In a statement, she characterized the fight as an honor and acknowledged the shared history that links their respective careers, while expressing confidence that she would emerge victorious despite anticipating a difficult challenge.

“Ronda came to me and said there is only one person she would make a comeback for and it has been her dream to make this fight happen between us,” Carano said.

For MVP, the bout represents more than a single event. Jake Paul and Nakisa Bidarian said their company plans to disrupt traditional promotional models. They also intend to use their partnership with Netflix to stage live events with cross-generational appeal. The executives cited Ronda Rousey’s past drawing power as proof. They argued that women’s combat sports can anchor marquee programming on a global platform.

The promotional tour begins March 5 with a press conference in Los Angeles. It marks the start of what fighters and promoters expect to be an aggressive marketing push. They believe it will build toward one of the most discussed returns in MMA history.

Westwood One Sports Tabs TM Studios, Core Image Studio to Elevate Its Network Sound

0

Westwood One Sports is utilizing a powerful tandem to handle the network’s sports imaging. TM Studios and Core Image Studio are collaborating with Westwood One to deliver a modern sound for the new 24/7 National Sports Network.

TM Studios created a new thematic jingle package featuring a wide variety of high energy contemporary thematic show opens and beds, all built around a brand new, unique four-note sonic signature. Sources close to the situation say the packages were custom-built in record time. It reinforced TM’s reputation for elite customer service on tight deadlines and maintaining focus on creativity and originality.

Core Image Studio meanwhile was summoned to bring it all to life. Justin Dove is managing the network’s production, building WW1’s sports updates, show intros, and show promos for radio affiliates.

“Working with the TM team is such an invigorating creative process,” said Bruce Gilbert, SVP Sports, Cumulus/Westwood One. “We started with the conceptual overview of what we believed Westwood One Sports meant to the consumer. Then we identified some sounds that we felt spoke to that consumer. The team at TM was able to masterfully blend the trap beats of hip hop, the high energy of EDM, and the catchy melodies of pop to formulate a modern sound that fit the contemporary presentation of Westwood One Sports. Justin Dove is now utilizing those pieces to make sure Westwood One Sports sounds modern and unique.”

TM CEO, Greg Clancy, said, “Westwood One approached TM to create a new sonic identity, both with a new logo and a specific feel, to capture the vision of the Westwood One/Audacy sports powerhouse. Once we knew Bruce Gilbert was leading the charge, we were all in.”

Core Image Studio’s Justin Dove also chimed In. “Working with a sports radio legend like Bruce Gilbert, along with Armen Williams and the Westwood team is a dream come true” shared Dove. “The icing on the cake, was utilizing TMs jingle work in the imaging. Dave at TM is crazy talented. The jingle package he created is cutting edge. It helps make the network sound big, and elevates the work I do for the entire WW1 team.”

Westwood One Sports is utilizing accomplished voice talent Steve Kamer for on-air voiceovers. Listeners can hear the entire package on Westwood One Sports’ hundreds of radio stations. Programming is also available via Sirius/XM Channel 375 and the Westwood One Sports app.

Mike Ryan Ruiz Admits Reaching a Breaking Point in Comments About Boomer Esiason

0

Mike Ryan Ruiz says he is not backing down from his criticism of WFAN morning host Boomer Esiason, but he is offering additional context for why he reached what he describes as a breaking point. Speaking Tuesday on The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz, Ruiz addressed the fallout from his fiery comments about Esiason’s stance that American Olympians should “pipe down” politically while representing Team USA.

Rather than retreat, Ruiz framed his reaction as the culmination of long-simmering frustration with what he views as inconsistent standards in sports commentary.

“I did reach a breaking point, and Boomer [Esiason] was an amalgamation of a lot of people like Boomer and Boomer himself, included, that wade into these waters just to scold what is obviously opposition,” Ruiz said. “Because Boomer does not have these takes when the UFC is on.”

Ruiz argued that Esiason’s remarks reflect a selective approach to politics in sports, contending that some commentators only object when viewpoints clash with their own sensibilities. In his view, the debate is less about patriotism or decorum and more about who controls the boundaries of acceptable speech.

“Boomer Esiason and others like him only venture into these waters when someone says something pretty innocuous,” Ruiz said. “You want to talk about it like a triggered snowflake — the Olympian was asked a question, and all he said was, ‘I feel conflicted.’ Yet that’s when you decide to inject politics into the conversation, because that’s when you don’t want sports and politics.”

Ruiz also suggested that a relative decline in outspoken activism from athletes in recent years has emboldened certain media voices to grow more comfortable sharing their own political leanings within sports discourse.

He pointed to what he perceives as a shift from the more demonstrative athlete-led movements of the 2010s.

“There have been plenty [of athletes] over the last four and a half years — plenty of issues that athletes would have taken a stand in the 20-teens have decided, ‘No, we’re not going to do that,’” Ruiz said. “They have made people like Boomer and other MAGA conservatives feel more comfortable. Even though they can go ahead and inject politics into the discussion whenever they feel like it. They just don’t like other people’s politics.”

At the same time, Ruiz drew a distinction between disagreement and dismissal, emphasizing that he accepts ideological differences so long as debate remains even-handed.

“I respect other people’s opinions, because I have to sit there and take it,” Ruiz said. “When it comes to sports, we can disagree. But if you’re just trying to shut up one side because it makes you feel better and it helps you sleep at night, that’s where I take issue with it.”

The exchange underscores a broader tension within modern sports media, where personality-driven programming increasingly collides with questions about activism, patriotism and platform. While neither side appears inclined to soften its broader philosophy, Ruiz’s latest comments make clear he views the dispute as part of a much larger cultural conversation rather than a singular feud.

Boomer Esiason has yet to comment on the commentary by Mike Ryan Ruiz.

Alexis Thompson Exits myTalk 107.1 After More Than 20 Years

2

myTalk 107.1 morning host Alexis Thompson has exited the Minneapolis talk station after Hubbard Broadcasting chose not to renew her contract.

Thompson helmed Jason & Alexis from 6-9 AM each morning on the station.

The news was confirmed on Tuesday morning by her longtime co-host Jason Matheson, who worked alongside Thompson since 2006 before being elevated to morning drive in 2013.

Thompson took to social media to share the news, as well.

“Thank you for 20+ years of supporting me as I built my career in radio,” wrote Thompson. “I loved my job and I loved entertaining you. But today marks a new chapter.”

“I believe community is everything and I hope you’ll come along with me as we build something new…together, ” she continued. “I have been lifted by your love and trust and I continue to be grateful. For now, I’m going to take a beat and do something I haven’t done in a long time…sleep past 4:20 am!”

The station has yet to announce what its plans for the daypart include, or whether Matheson will continue to host the daypart solo or a new partner will be brought in.

550 WGR Launches FM Simulcast Replacing 107.7/104.7 The Wolf

2

Audacy Sports 550 WGR has officially expanded to the FM dial beginning this morning with a full simulcast on 107.7 and 104.7 in Buffalo after flipping the former Country outlet known as The Wolf. The format change occurred overnight, transitioning both 107.7 FM and translator 104.7 FM from country music to a full-time simulcast of WGR, which continues to brand primarily around its 550 AM frequency while on-air talent has begun acknowledging the added FM signals.

The flip ends the run of 107.7/104.7 The Wolf, which debuted in June 2021 and featured a local morning show hosted by Liz Mantel alongside nationally syndicated country programming throughout the remainder of the broadcast day.

According to reports, Mantel will remain with the Audacy Buffalo cluster as Promotions Director, maintaining a role within the market despite the format transition.

From a strategic standpoint, the FM simulcast strengthens WGR’s competitive position at a pivotal time for the station and the broader Buffalo sports landscape. The Buffalo Bills announced plans to depart WGR, and the co-owned Buffalo Sabres are also expected to move their broadcasts at the conclusion of the current season.

The teams will produce and distribute its radio broadcasts for preseason, regular season, and playoff broadcasts beginning with next season. It will work with Good Karma Brands to build its content plans going forward. Along with the move, the daily show One Bills Live also moved to in-house production and exited WGR 550 and 950 The Fan in Rochester. The show is now streamed on BuffaloBills.com, the Buffalo Bills app, and will continue to simulcast on MSG Western New York.

WGR 550 has served as the radio flagship of the Buffalo Bills for the past 14 seasons. It is unclear where the NFL franchise will place its radio broadcasts beginning with the 2026 season.

Ultimately, the launch of WGR’s FM simulcast on 107.7 and 104.7 marks both a brand extension and a strategic shift. The move reflects broader industry migration trends toward FM distribution. It also ensures Buffalo’s longtime sports voice reaches listeners with greater clarity. Coverage will now expand across Western New York.

Fox News to Launch ‘Hang Out with Sean Hannity’ Podcast

0

Fox News has announced it is launching a new podcast with Sean Hannity, set to debut next month.

Hang Out with Sean Hannity will debut on Tuesday, March 3rd. The podcast will release new episodes twice per week, featuring long-form conversations between Hannity and guests filmed inside his Florida man cave.

“I’ve always been interested in how people got to where they are,” said Hannity about the new project. “The risks they took, the failures they pushed through, and the lessons that don’t make it on TV. This podcast is a chance to slow down and have those conversations, no scripts, no talking points, just real discussions with people who have something meaningful to say.”

The new podcast for Sean Hannity will complement his nationally syndicated radio show, which he will continue to host. However, the new project will mean the end of his Sean program on the FOX Nation platform.

“Sean Hannity remains one of the most influential voices in media, grounded by the same values and work ethic that defined his early days,” said Fox News Digital and New Media President Porter Berry. “We’re thrilled to expand our podcast portfolio with one of the most accomplished broadcasters to ever pick up a microphone.”

The new podcast will be available on YouTube, Spotify, and all major podcast platforms.

Paul Pabst: Dan Patrick Still Has “His Fastball”

0

With retirement penciled in for 2028, speculation has naturally followed Dan Patrick’s timeline, yet those inside his inner circle insist the longtime host remains firmly in command of his sports talk approach. During a recent appearance on Spiegel and Holmes on Chicago’s 104.3 The Score, Dan Patrick Show producer Paul Pabst offered a candid look at what daily life alongside Patrick still feels like as the clock ticks toward the end of an era.

Patrick, who has said publicly that he plans to step away from the microphone in 2028, long ago established a personal standard for when he would call it a career. Pabst explained that the benchmark has never been contractual or ratings-driven, but performance-based.

“He said he wants to always do it when he’s got his fastball,” Pabst said. “And if he doesn’t have his fastball, hand it off to a younger person. I think he completely still has his fastball.”

That assessment carries weight from someone who has worked alongside Patrick for more than two decades. He has watched him handle breaking news cycles, Super Bowl radio rows, and the daily unpredictability of live broadcasting. According to Pabst, there has been no noticeable decline in preparation or execution. That remains true even as quiet discussions about the show’s eventual succession circulate within the industry

In fact, Pabst revealed that interest in what happens next has already surfaced from outside the show.

“He just wants to do some things with his family here and there,” Pabst said. “But it’s been interesting [talking with] some people in the industry. Some people said, ‘Hey, who’s going to take over for Dan?’ I’ve had people call and text and write, send gift baskets of muffins.”

The comment drew laughs, yet it underscored the stature of The Dan Patrick Show within sports media. Replacing a host who helped redefine the modern sports talk format is no small task, and the curiosity speaks to the brand Patrick built after leaving ESPN and launching his own syndicated platform.

Still, Pabst believes the true differentiator remains Patrick’s approach to interviews, particularly on the sport’s biggest stages. He pointed to a recent Super Bowl week appearance in San Francisco as a prime example.

“We got Bo Jackson on set, and we never had Bo Jackson on set,” Pabst said. “Dan is asking some questions, and he’s like, we got to get one thing that I don’t know, that we don’t know about Bo Jackson.”

What followed, according to Pabst, was a story about Jackson suffering a concussion and mistakenly wandering to the opposing sideline before being redirected — an anecdote many listeners had never heard.

“That’s what I think Dan’s genius is,” Pabst added. “He wants to get you something on every interview you’ve never heard before.”

As 2028 approaches, the succession chatter will only intensify. For now, however, Pabst maintains the host he works with daily remains at the top of his game, delivering the kind of moments that built his reputation in the first place.
