Joe Rogan: My Podcast Grew in Popularity Due to Lack of Trust in Mainstream Media

0

The Joe Rogan Experience has seen a steady rise in popularity in recent years. He believes it’s directly related to the diminishing trust in mainstream media outlets.

During a recent conversation with comedian Bridget Phetasy, Rogan said that legacy media outlets aren’t “going to course correct” on their coverage of President Donald Trump.

In particular, Joe Rogan called out mainstream media outlets as reason for his program’s popularity, as well as the rise of digital outlets.

“We don’t trust The New York Times, we don’t trust The Washington Post, we don’t trust CNN or MSNBC,” said Rogan. “They’re all full with propaganda. And so that’s why the internet rose. It’s not because there was some sort of a f—ing right-wing conspiracy, heavily funded. No, you guys suck. You guys f—ing suck, and you’re not real people. Nobody wants to hang out with Brian Stelter. None of these people are people that people can relate to and like.”

He added his belief that the Democratic Party has a fundamental misunderstanding of why Trump and other right-wing pundits and politicians have become so popular.

“It’s all nonsense. Their understanding of social media and the dynamics you set up by having completely state-controlled mainstream media where they only said the narratives you guys wanted,” said Rogan. “They all said it in step, so you could watch different programs repeat the exact same words and exact same phrases.”

The Volume Adds ‘New Rory & Mal’ Podcast in First Entertainment Show on Colin Cowherd-Founded Network

0

The Volume, the digital media company founded by Colin Cowherd, is set to add the New Rory & Mal Podcast — hosted by Rory Farrell and Jamil “Mal” Clay — to its growing stable of shows.

The duo previously worked on The Joe Budden Podcast before splitting from the show in 2021 in a high-profile move after a dispute over compensation for the program.

In addition to hosting their regular podcast, which is a near-constant in the top music shows according to Apple Podcasts, the duo will add a new sports-focused show called Rory and Mal Don’t Know Ball for The Volume.

“It’s a blessing to connect with people that understand you and believe in your vision and passions,” Rory and Mal said in a statement. “The Volume has built a community of creators and personalities that align with the New Rory & Mal brand. We’re looking forward to adding to that ecosystem in our own unique and unapologetic way. The Volume just got a little louder.”

In a post to social media, Colin Cowherd shared his excitement for the addition of the duo.

“Couldn’t be prouder of the team,” he shared as part of the announcement.

The news was first reported by Front Office Sports.

Dan ‘Big Cat’ Katz: FOX Super Bowl Scorebug Was a ‘War Crime’

0

As FOX Sports rewrote the record books with its presentation of Super Bowl LIX drawing the largest average viewing audience for a television program in U.S. history, there were mixed reviews surrounding its new scorebug. The network was met with criticism from fans in deviating from the look it had used throughout the year, debuting a modern and minimalistic graphic asset displaying the down and distance, score and quarter. In fact, the generally unobtrusive visual element drew the attention of Dan “Big Cat” Katz during Monday’s edition of the Pardon My Take podcast.

Katz, a Barstool Sports personality who has been with the company since 2012, called FOX deciding to debut the new scorebug as “a war crime” and referred to it as being “disgusting.” This led Eric Sollenberger, commonly known as “PFT Commenter,” to question why networks have commonly engaged in this practice during the Super Bowl. CBS Sports revealed a new scorebug during Super Bowl LVIII in Las Vegas, and FOX Sports had debuted a cartoon-inspired element two years earlier as well.

“This is something that you need like at least a full year to workshop in case you lay a dud,” PFT Commenter said. “This one was so bad, it looked like they screwed up and had to redevelop and redesign their scorebug like four hours before kickoff, and they just had time to make like two rectangles that they would put on the screen.”

Henry Lockwood, the producer of Pardon My Take, had stated that the FOX Sports scorebug resembled that used on Barstool Sports streams since the company does not have rights to certain on-air elements. PFT Commenter also mentioned the empty space in the middle of the scorebug without a background, leading Katz to contend that whoever came up with the component should be fired.

“I don’t know how that gets through,” Katz said. “It goes to what we say all the time. Just hire a regular fan for these high-level meetings, have them sit down, show them the scorebug and they’ll immediately be like, ‘What the f**k is that?’”

PFT Commenter conveyed that it is necessary to debut the scorebug a full season ahead of time so viewers can become used to it rather than revealing it during the Super Bowl. Furthermore, he surmised that the approval rating regarding a new scorebug is probably around 20% and then asked Katz if he hated the new element every time it was revealed. Katz concurred that this was a fact rather than fiction, thus backing what PFT Commenter was articulating.

“To do it during the Super Bowl, even if it’s halfway decent, which this one was not, we’re still going to act like it’s the worst thing in the world,” PFT Commenter concluded. “This was worse than anyone could have expected though.”

ESPN, NFL Discuss Control Over NFL Media Including NFL Network: Report

0

The NFL and ESPN are reportedly resuming talks about the sports programming network taking control over parts of NFL Media, according to a report by John Ourand of PUCK Media. According to the report the parameters of a deal would give full control to ESPN over the NFL Network and NFL RedZone including other league assets, which would boost ESPN’s talks with distributors and be a key piece of the network’s looming launch of their direct-to-consumer product entitled “Flagship.”

ESPN President Jimmy Pitaro shared last November that the plan is to launch the “Flagship” product in the fall of 2025.

“We are going to do so with significant product enhancements, and so we have a team of world-class engineers and product people that are working on this every single day, and I’m meeting with them almost every single day,” Pitaro shared at the ESPN Edge Conference attended by Barrett Media. “This is one of my passion areas is ‘product,’ and I don’t think I’ve ever been more excited than anything I’ve been attached to or worked on, primarily because I’m a sports fan, and everything I’m seeing from the team is resonating with me as a sports fan.”

While Ourand states in the report that it’s till too early to predict whether or not an official deal will be struck, these discussions reportedly began back in January of 2024 that took a pause in September. The NFL may opt out it’s current agreement with Disney following the 2028-2029 season, so making an agreement now would benefit ESPN with more NFL content for it’s already vast host of live 24/7 channels and the league with finding a suitor to take hold of some assets which have not performed as well as originally thought.

Overall the NFL saw a 2.2% ratings decline for the 2024 season despite 70 NFL games being in the top 100 broadcasts in the United States. The overall average viewership per game however does not include games broadcast on Peacock, ESPN+ or international games broadcast on the NFL Network. FOX Sports announced Monday night that Super Bowl LIX between the Philadelphia Eagles and Kansas City Chiefs averaged 126 million viewers with a peak average of 135.7 million viewers between 8:00-8:15pm ET.

KDWB’s Dave Ryan Suspended For ‘Inappropriate Content’

0

The Minnesota Star Tribune reports that market veteran and long-time KDWB morning host Dave Ryan was suspended from his Monday show following what the station calls “inappropriate content.”

The bit, which was executed on the air last Friday, was called “Super Blow.” It featured Ryan’s co-hosts snorting food ingredients when answering incorrectly during a trivia segment. The ingredients included flour, sugar, coffee creamer, and pumpkin spice, shaped in lines.

During Monday’s Show, a recorded message from iHeartRadio‘s Top 40 Programming Executive Rich Davis apologized to listeners and confirmed the suspension. The content was also edited out of the show’s YouTube recording.

Ryan returned to his show on Tuesday morning.

Being a News/Talk Radio Star Comes With a Cost

0

There are unique stresses associated with being an on-air radio personality. Our career is more than just a job. It is our identity and passion. It seems pretty cool to be a local or national celebrity. There is a cost to our career. Let’s talk about those costs.

You are a local celebrity without the mansion in the nicest neighborhood. Some of us have that. Celebrities are often perceived as products, not people. I’ll give you a personal example: I dated a lady and realized that she was interested in me as a known commodity and not as a person. I asked her if she liked me because of what I do for a living or for who I am as an individual. She then replied, “What you do is who you are.” So, I was a product to her. I was not someone who she loved or liked.

Being considered somewhat different than a human being can be personally costly. Do your friends consider you a trophy to hang out with? Does the person you are dating see you as nothing more than a stepping stone? You have heard the adage about famous actors or musicians being unable to sustain long-term relationships. It is because they begin to look at every human interaction as transactional. Well, I don’t think that every person that you interact with is anything less than human. If you look at people as just a transaction, you are not going to live a fulfilled life.

Every radio personality has a deep-seated insecurity about their show and performance. This is very natural. Now, some air personalities will put up a false sense of bravado. In my career, I have coached a wide range of personalities. Just like any group of people, some are very sensitive; others are insanely confident to the point of being delusional and sometimes it is somewhere in the middle.

I was asked by a Market Manager friend of mine to listen and speak to his talk show hosts. I listened to the shows and found a few things to address. And I spoke with one of the hosts who was very receptive and has since developed into a very good local host.

The second host that I spoke with was completely living in a dream world. The host’s talent was undeniable. He had a very distinctive delivery and show presentation. The second host gave excuses for every one of my observations. It was the station’s equipment, it was the studio set-up, yadda yadda yadda. It was a defense mechanism. The second host was so focused on what was wrong with everything other than his performance.

If you are fortunate enough to have strong coaching, listen. Tom Brady, the greatest quarterback of all time, hired coaches to maximize his throwing motion and footwork. Tiger Woods hired coaches to help him improve his game. If you think that you can do this on your own, you are in for a rude awakening.

You may be very successful right now or perhaps in the recent past. But the news/talk format is in the middle of a reinvention due to the competitive pressures and the desire to reach younger listeners. Hosts needing to reinvent their shows can sometimes be blindsided. There is one thing that I can guarantee. Change is a constant in our lives, the market, and your show. If you are not trying new things, you are in real trouble. We know this and it is frightening. It is just easier to keep doing what we have been doing.

I have had talk radio show hosts bring me an audio sample from something that they have tried. Sometimes, it is genius, and other times it is something that needs to be refined. This is hugely stressful. I understand. It is best for you and your show to always be innovative. Ask for coaching. Ask for a regular aircheck session.

Many Program Directors prefer to be hallway coaches. These PDs will give you a quick suggestion. An aircheck session allows you to hear yourself with a knowledgeable person in the room with you. It allows for improvement. Very few air personalities review their performances regularly. It is because we hate the process. On Sunday, we witnessed the Super Bowl. I guarantee you that every coach and player was studying the other team looking for weaknesses. The best players review their performances. The player looks for weaknesses in their own performance. When is the last time that you did that?

I had a host with a weird verbal tick. It was an on-again, off-again issue that this great host knew and feared hearing. Here is what I suggested: I asked him to edit one hour of his show removing this verbal tick and we would review the edited hour. The host hated the idea. After the personal exercise, the verbal tick disappeared! Airchecking yourself works.

We are in a time of great change. There is a lot of fear, understandably. You have great talent. You also have the skills to create a lane for yourself. It is all about reflecting your audience. It is also about understanding the competition is no longer a few radio stations. Podcasts, YouTube, websites, streaming options, personal playlists, and more. When your show’s ratings and/or revenue decline, it is on the host. While scary, it is best to address the issue preemptively.

Ultimately, you are the driver of your radio show’s success or failure. Don’t be delusional. You have the talent, experience, and creativity to make these changes. When you provide a Listener-Focused Experience, you will maximize your platform.
