ESPN Signs Contract Extension with NFL Draft Analyst Jordan Reid

0

ESPN announced it has re-signed NFL draft analyst Jordan Reid to a new contract. Reid will continue as a member of the network’s year-round coverage of the NFL Draft along with the likes of Mel Kiper Jr., Field Yates and Matt Miller.

Reid will continue to be found primarily on ESPN.com and ESPN+. During NFL draft season, Reid will also make appearances across ESPN studio shows and contribute to ESPN’s on-site NFL draft coverage. Reid will continue to post NFL draft prospect rankings, position rankings, mock drafts and 2024 NFL rookie rankings, among other things.

Reid joined ESPN in 2021 and previously served as a writer and scout for The Draft Network. Previously, Reid served as a football coach at his alma mater, North Carolina Central University, from 2014-18, helping the Eagles win three MEAC titles. His move to coaching followed his playing career at the school (2010-13), where he started for three seasons at quarterback and achieved the school record for completion percentage.

Greg Gutfeld to Return to Fox News After Paternity Leave

0

Fox News host Greg Gutfeld is set to return to the network on Monday, January 6th after stepping away for paternity leave after he and his wife welcomed a baby girl in December.

On Tuesday, December 10th, Dana Perino announced that Gutfeld was absent for the best of reasons, as his wife had given birth to a daughter. In a statement sent to the show, Gutfeld joked that his daughter was “healthy with a real set of lungs.”

Greg Gutfeld’s return to Fox News follows 2024, which was his late-night show — Gutfeld! — seeing its best year in program history, as it averaged 2.5 million viewers. A September visit with then-Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump set a new high-water mark for the show as nearly 5 million viewers tuned into the conversation.

In addition to hosting the late-night show, Gutfeld, 60, is also a panelist on the network’s show The Five — alongside hosts Jesse Watters, Dana Perino, and Jeanine Pirro — which led all of cable news in total viewership during 2024.

College Football Playoff Quarterfinal Games Average 16.9 Million Viewers on ESPN Networks

0

Quarterfinal games within the 12-team College Football Playoff averaged 16.9 million viewers on ESPN platforms as the network presented pivotal game action last week. The Rose Bowl Game led the pack with an average of 21.1 million viewers watching the matchup between Ohio State and Oregon on Wednesday night, according to data from Nielsen Media Research. Compared to the previous year, the matchup was down 24% from the overtime thriller between Michigan and Alabama in the semifinals last year. The game was the most-watched non-NFL sporting event since the National Championship Game within last year’s College Football Playoff. Viewership for the matchup peaked at 24.3 million viewers, helping to garner the largest audience of the college football season thus far.

As part of the ESPN MegaCast presentation, the network presented a new edition of Field Pass with The Pat McAfee Show on ESPN2. The telecast made history as the most-viewed alternate broadcast in ESPN history with an average of 2.4 million viewers. Earlier in the day, College GameDay also collected an average of 2.4 million viewers for a three-hour episode of the show airing live from the Rose Bowl Game. The pregame show was up 70% year-over-year and peaked at 4.6 million viewers.

The Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl between Texas and Arizona State drew an average of 17.3 million viewers, marking the most-watched College Football Playoff game in history to kick off before 3 p.m. EST. Viewership declined by 22.7% from the last iteration of the Peach Bowl when Georgia attained a sudden victory over Ohio State in prime time. Yet viewership within the overall 1 p.m. EST window recorded a 7% increase from the 16.1 million it averaged last year when three different Bowl games aired concurrently on ABC, ESPN and ESPN2. The viewership of this year’s Peach Bowl peaked with an audience of 23.6 million, marking the third most-watched Peach Bowl in history. Texas will face Ohio State in the Goodyear Cotton Bowl Classic on Friday at 7:30 p.m. EST with a spot in the National Championship Game on the line.

A truck attack on Bourbon Street in New Orleans that killed 14 people and injured several more civilians delayed kickoff of the Allstate Sugar Bowl by 20 hours from Caesars Superdome. The quarterfinal game between Notre Dame and Georgia averaged 15.8 million viewers in the afternoon slot, down 16% from the semifinal game in the traditional Rose Bowl window last year. The game was the least-watched playoff edition of the Sugar Bowl and peaked with 19.5 million viewers.

Concluding the slate of games, the Vrbo Fiesta Bowl started action in the quarterfinals on Tuesday night at 7:30 p.m. EST and averaged 13.9 million viewers. This is the least-watched playoff edition of the matchup in its history, according to Jon Lewis of Sports Media Watch, and peaked with 15.9 million viewers. The game was also the only quarterfinal game to fall behind average viewership for a game in the first round (Tennessee-Ohio State, 14.7 million viewers). Penn State will face Notre Dame in the Capital One Orange Bowl on Thursday at 7:30 p.m. EST, with the winner advancing to the National Championship Game.

VSiN Rejoins SiriusXM, Launching New Joint Program with Mad Dog Sports Radio

0

VSiN has announced its return to SiriusXM, bringing some new friends along for the ride. Today, the companies announced that VSiN would return to the satellite radio provider on Jan.17 on SiriusXM channel 158.

In addition to the 24/7 sports betting channel, VSiN and Mad Dog Sports Radio will team up to produce more sports betting content. “VSiN Live on Mad Dog Sports Radio” will air on weeknights from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. ET, bringing back former “The Wrap” host Patrick Meagher and longtime cohort Dustin Swedelson to the channel. That show premieres on Jan. 6 and promises to deliver “sports talk and wagering-focused content to listeners while games are in progress.”

“I’m thrilled to be working with the great team at SiriusXM again and excited that this agreement will allow us to collaborate on wagering and fantasy sports content that will entertain their national sports audience,” said Steve Cohen, executive vice president of talent and programming at VSiN. “A great first example of this collaboration is the daily show we’ll be jointly producing for Mad Dog Sports Radio, and we look forward to delivering additional first-in-class sports talk programming together.”

VSiN originally aired radio programming on SiriusXM from 2017 to 2020 but has since been absent from the platform since then. The station was headlined by Brent Musburger’s “My Guys in the Desert,” a show that played off Musburger’s longtime broadcasting nod and wink to Las Vegas’ sports betting scene before the activity was legalized elsewhere. Musburger still acts as the lead broadcaster and managing editor for VSiN. His nephew, Brian, is the company’s president and chief business officer and is equally excited about the news.

“We’ve always understood the importance of the SiriusXM platform for sports fans and betting enthusiasts and are thrilled to deliver the unique sports betting content this engaged and growing audience is looking for – straight from the entertainment and gaming capital of the world in Las Vegas,” the younger Musburger said in a statement. “Distribution on SiriusXM is a critical component of our expansion strategy and helps solidify VSiN’s position as the nation’s largest sports betting network.”

VSiN officially returns to SiriusXM on Jan. 17 via channel 158 on both Sirius and XM devices. There’s been no word yet on a show schedule, but it will likely mirror VSiN’s existing schedule that is disseminated via its own live streaming platform.

Fubo Settles Litigation Against Venu Sports in Merger with Hulu + Live TV

0

The Walt Disney Company and FuboTV Inc. have reached a deal to merge online television businesses, as first reported on Monday morning by Bloomberg News. This deal merges Disney’s Hulu + Live TV entity with Fubo and forms the second-largest digital pay television provider in the United States with over 6.2 million subscribers. Disney will own 70% of this new joint venture, while Fubo will earn the other 30% as both companies enter into this merger. Fubo’s management team, which is led by co-founder and chief executive officer David Gandler, will operate this newly combined business. This deal does not include the Hulu streaming video on demand business, which has 47.4 million subscribers according to the latest quarterly earnings report from Disney.

Under the terms of the agreement, Hulu + Live TV and Fubo are continuing to operate under two distinctive brands. Moreover, Fubo has settled all legal claims against Venu Sports, the attempted joint venture from The Walt Disney Company, FOX Corporation and Warner Bros. Discovery to create a centralized streaming optionality for sports fans. Venu Sports was unable to launch prior to the football season after Fubo earned a preliminary injunction upon expressing antitrust concerns. The three media conglomerates will make an aggregate cash payment to Fubo of $220 million, while Disney provides it a $145 million term in 2026 as part of the deal.

“We are thrilled to collaborate with Disney to create a consumer-first streaming company that combines the strengths of the Fubo and Hulu + Live TV brands,” Gandler said in a statement. “This combination enables us to deliver on our promise to provide consumers with greater choice and flexibility. Additionally, this agreement allows us to scale effectively, strengthens Fubo’s balance sheet and positions us for positive cash flow. It’s a win for consumers, our shareholders, and the entire streaming industry.”

Fubo, which has a market capitalization of about $481 million, would remain publicly traded under the deal, according to the report. The company has encountered challenges in its operation related to programming costs, subscriber churn and outside competition. The virtual multichannel video programming distributor (vMVPD) provides users with an alternative to cable, satellite and/or fiber television as cord cutting continues in the United States. Hulu + Live TV is another alternative to cable television, offering approximately 100 live television channels spanning genres such as sports, news and entertainment.

“This combination will allow both Hulu + Live TV and Fubo to enhance and expand their virtual MVPD offerings and provide consumers with even more choice and flexibility,” Justin Warbrooke, executive vice president and head of corporate development for The Walt Disney Company, said in a statement. “We have confidence in the Fubo management team and their ability to grow the business, delivering high-quality offerings that serve subscribers with the content they want and offering great value.”

Fubo had communicated to the court that if Venu Sports had successfully launched, it would run out of money by the fiscal first quarter and result in insolvency. Furthermore, it argued that Disney, FOX and Warner Bros. Discovery would be bundling 60-80% of the live sports streaming rights in the United States if the joint venture was allowed to proceed. The three media conglomerates are reportedly planning to ask the U.S. Court of Appeals in oral arguments on Monday to reverse the ruling pertaining to the launch of Venu Sports, according to Dawn Chmielewski of Reuters.

As part of the deal, Disney is entering into a carriage agreement with Fubo that allows the streaming provider to create a sports and broadcast service. This category will include sports and broadcast entities from Disney, including ABC, ESPN, ESPN2, ESPNU, SEC Network, ACC Network, ESPNews and ESPN+. Aside from the aforementioned term loan, a $130 million termination fee will be payable to Fubo under certain circumstances, including if this transaction fails to close due to being unable to obtain requisite regulatory approvals.

Lawsuit from Former FOX Sports Employee Names Skip Bayless, Charlie Dixon, Joy Taylor as Defendants

0

A former hairstylist who worked at the Los Angeles studios for FOX Sports has filed a lawsuit alleging various claims against Charlie Dixon, executive vice president of content at FS1, along with on-air host Joy Taylor and former commentator Skip Bayless. The 42-page lawsuit, which was filed in the Superior Court of California and first obtained by Front Office Sports, featured several allegations by plaintiff Noushin Faraji. The document also contains a class-action provision, affirming that FOX Sports has not paid all employees minimum wage or sufficient overtime wages.

Attorneys on behalf of Faraji explained that she is looking for unspecified monetary damages and demanded a jury trial. In addition to listing Dixon, Taylor and Bayless as defendants, the lawsuit claims that FOX Sports executives Mark Silverman and Eric Shanks could be named as defendants based on discovery. The suit also alleges that Silverman, Shanks and the FOX legal team “worked hard to protect perpetrators by forcing individuals who were witnesses to or targets of misconduct and/or harassment to sign nondisclosure agreements upon separation from employment.”

“We take these allegations seriously and have no further comment at this time given this pending litigation,” FOX Sports said in a statement provided to Front Office Sports.

Faraji started working at FOX Sports as a part-time employee in 2012 and was hired as a full-time hairstylist four years later. After meeting Taylor in March 2016 shortly after her move to Los Angeles from Miami, she befriended her and went out for a drink and Santa Monica. Taylor arrived with Dixon, and as he accompanied them on future outings, she suspected that the colleagues were sleeping with one another. Later in the summer, a new show with Bayless and former NFL tight end Shannon Sharpe was beginning and Taylor, despite having “very little TV experience,” was added to be the moderator.

“Mr. Bayless later disclosed to Ms. Faraji that he did not want Ms. Taylor on the show, but Mr. Dixon was adamant that Ms. Taylor should star,” the lawsuit reads. “At first, Mr. Dixon arranged a dinner between Mr. Bayless and Ms. Taylor where she arrived in provocative clothing and acted in a provocative manner. When that did not change Mr. Bayless’ opinion of Ms. Taylor, Mr. Dixon asked him to approve of her as a favor to him. Reluctantly, Mr. Bayless agreed to do so as a favor to his friend.”

An inappropriate interaction between Dixon and Faraji was described earlier in the lawsuit as “unsolicited touching,” something that left her mortified. When she turned to Taylor, she informed her to “get over it” and that Dixon was the reason Faraji had her job. It is also alleged that Dixon declined to extend the contract of an anonymous female talent member for refusing to have sex with him. The lawsuit claims that he was doing this to other women talent, Faraji should warn Taylor to be careful and that a talk show host had recently reported him. While conveying what she was told, Taylor replied that “no one gives a f***” about this anonymous female talent or talk show host.

“Ms. Faraji later observed that Ms. Taylor’s remark appeared accurate, as no actions were taken to address the concerns raised,” the lawsuit said. “If it was not already apparent, it became even more clear that Fox enabled high-ranking individuals to abuse their authority, exerting undue control over female talent and employees.”

After Bayless requested Faraji to give him a weekly haircut in the makeup room, he allegedly started to find reasons to touch Faraji. Uncomfortable with this physical contact, she would make excuses to leave, and was eventually referred to as “voluptuous” by the Undisputed co-host.

Deciding to remain kind to Bayless to avoid risking her job, she allegedly put up with it and later divulged that she had issues with her left ovary and could have cancer. Instead of Bayless taking pity on her, he said that he wanted to be with her and offered her $1.5 million to have sex. Following other advances and text exchanges, Bayless accused Faraji of having a relationship with Sharpe and demanded she come to his car after the show, which she refused.

Four days later, Faraji placed a recording device in the makeup room and started speaking with Bayless. Knowing that the room was always recorded, he stated that the room was bugged and said that he would hate for her to lose the job but cannot be “doing a big thing with my archrival.” Responding that being polite to Sharpe is part of her job, Bayless called “bulls***” and revealed that he has loved her for six years.

Throughout the rest of the lawsuit, there are further accusations against Taylor, details of an internal investigation and events that led to her firing. The final interaction between Bayless and Faraji took place this past summer in which he described a new opportunity he was expecting to take part in outside of FOX. Bayless allegedly told Faraji that “he fantasizes about having sex with her and asked how much money it would take for her to have sex with him.” Six days after Undisputed was canceled, FOX stated that “they can only afford to have one hairdresser work on all three shows (a new morning show, Speak, and Undisputed) and fired her.

“Ms. Faraji brings forth this action because for over a decade at Fox, she was forced to endure a misogynistic, racist, and ableist workplace where executives and talent were allowed to physically and verbally abuse workers with impunity,” the lawsuit articulates. “When Ms. Faraji and others came forward to report the wrongdoing, instead of addressing their concerns, Fox retaliated against them while the perpetrators and those who protected them were inexplicably promoted. This case thus represents yet another in a long line of cases chronicling the toxic culture at Fox, marked by bad faith promises and repeated failures to address a poisonous and entrenched patriarchy.”
