NAB ‘Remains Commited to Working with Next Congress’ to Pass AM Radio for Every Vehicle Act After Bill Doesn’t Receive Vote

0

The AM Radio for Every Vehicle Act won’t receive a vote before Congress before this session ends, but the National Association of Broadcasters (NAB) will continue to work towards its passage.

The 118th Congress will adjourn without taking a vote on the bill, despite it receiving 271 co-sponsors in the House of Representatives and an additional 63 supporters in the Senate.

NAB President and CEO Curtis LeGeyt shared that the organization will continue to work toward the bill’s adoption despite the setback.

“While we are disappointed the AM Radio for Every Vehicle Act did not pass this Congress, the overwhelming bipartisan and bicameral support underscores the vital role AM radio plays in keeping Americans safe during emergencies and connected to their local communities,” said LeGeyt. “We are grateful to the bill’s sponsors, more than 125 supportive organizations, hundreds of thousands of listeners who contacted their lawmakers, and more than 330 members of Congress who championed this effort.”

“Their voices reflect the urgent need to preserve this essential service, which millions of listeners rely on every day for lifesaving information and trusted local news. NAB remains committed to working with the next Congress to swiftly pass this legislation and ensure AM radio’s critical role is preserved in automobiles for all Americans.”

The AM Radio for Every Vehicle Act had been awaiting a vote in the House since September. Some had hoped the bill would be included with another piece of legislation that would grant billions in disaster relief to areas impacted by hurricanes in 2024. However, it was not included, leading to another delay in its potential enaction.

Evan Cohen, Chris Carlin and Freddie Coleman to Call the Boca Raton Bowl on ESPN Radio

0

As an array of Bowl games commence within the college football landscape, ESPN platforms are delivering 33 games including coverage of the 12-team College Football Playoff. The company has presented three games within Bowl season thus far, and starting at 5:30 p.m. EST on Wednesday, a first-of-its-kind broadcast team will take the air on ESPN Radio to call the Boca Raton Bowl between Western Kentucky and James Madison. The three hosts summoned for duty, weekday hosts: Evan Cohen, Chris Carlin, and Freddie Coleman.

Chris Carlin serves as the play-by-play announcer, working alongside Freddie Coleman on analysis, with Evan Cohen reporting from the sidelines. ESPN Radio revamped its lineup in 2023, pairing Cohen with Chris Canty and Michelle Smallmon on its morning show UnSportsmanLike. Coleman meanwhile partners with Harry Douglas in afternoon drive, and Carlin shares middays from Noon to 3 p.m. EST with Joe Fortenbaugh. When asked to take part in calling the game, Cohen, Carlin, and Coleman didn’t hesitate.

“It’s kind of cool to have three of our shows represented as part of the same broadcast, and I said, ‘Absolutely, 1000%, I’m in,’” Cohen said. “I just thought it was a really smart idea by [management].”

Cohen emphasized that there is camaraderie across the ESPN Radio lineup, evidenced by the rapport between hosts and frequent guest appearances in other parts of the lineup. Being able to promote the game throughout the week through different on-air segments and draw awareness towards the unique endeavor. Although the broadcasting team has not had a chance to work together in this capacity, they have listened to each other in sports talk radio and are familiar with their programs.

“It’s just a new adventure that all three of us are combining to do,” Coleman said. “I don’t recall in all my years in ESPN Radio having not just air talents who do a regular show on a day-by-day basis on ESPN Radio, but from the morning show, then also afternoon drive with me, and then you have the midday show, having all of us come together where we’ve done stuff like this before and doing it together, representing ESPN Radio is going to be really, really cool.”

Coleman has previous experience working as a color analyst on collegiate broadcasts for football, basketball and hockey for several institutions. During his time with ESPN, he has also forayed into play-by-play announcing and has an understanding of how to effectively serve multiple roles. The versatility within his skillset will be exhibited on the radio call Wednesday night as he provides his insights and perspectives on the action.

“You have to allow your eyes to tell you the truth, and be the eyes for people out there, whether they’re watching on TV or listening on radio,” Coleman said. “I’m always going to do everything I can to paint a picture with my words – and you can definitely do that as a play-by-play broadcaster – but as a color analyst, especially on radio, you have to be very vivid in your descriptions.”

Cohen will be situated on the field level gathering stories and enhancing the overall broadcast, working at a game that he has attended for the last decade. Throughout the week, he has been preparing for the action by studying the rosters of both teams, researching information and thinking about potential storylines. The assignment takes place just after the morning radio program with Cohen and co-hosts Michelle Smallmon and Chris Canty celebrated one year on the air together.

“I truly believe what we have done is create a unit that is really going in the same direction, and we like being around each other and we look forward to it,” Cohen said. “I think the No. 1 thing that a listener or a viewer can tell that it’s no B.S., we make fun of each other constantly. You don’t make fun of people that you’re not comfortable with. If you listen to our show, you will hear all of us making fun of each other in a healthy, loving way, and that did not happen a year-plus ago because we did not know each other.”

Coleman is grateful to managers at ESPN Radio, including Justin Craig, Liam Chapman and Pete Ciccone, for recognizing the abilities within the radio lineup and implementing them into the game broadcast. Working with Douglas on the afternoon drive program has given Coleman someone to bounce ideas off of and gain firsthand knowledge and intel about what happens on the field. This new assignment, which begins on Wednesday night, is something he hopes is the “beginning of something special,” but he does not want to put any pressure on the unit with this opportunity.

“I don’t have any doubt,” Coleman said. “That’s why they put us all together, because we’ve had extensive experience doing this, and it’s a chance to only bring that kind of expertise to the broadcast, but also further what we do on a day-by-day on ESPN Radio with our shows.”

Charles Barkley Reveals Meetings with NBC and Amazon Ahead of New NBA Media Rights Deal

0

ESPN announced last month that it will air Inside the NBA surrounding marquee events within its NBA coverage, licensing the award-winning TNT Sports studio show in the first season under a new 11-year media rights contract with the National Basketball Association. A few months earlier, TNT Sports reached a long-term commitment with analyst Charles Barkley to have him exclusively contribute to the company for years to come. Barkley signed a 10-year deal with TNT Sports in 2022 and has been with the sports division for the last 25 years. While it was presumed that he would continue to take part on Inside the NBA next season, that is apparently not the case.

Barkley, while appearing on Tuesday’s edition of the Dan Patrick Show, divulged that he is listening to NBC and Amazon as the companies build out their broadcast teams ahead of obtaining NBA live game broadcast rights next season. Moreover, he wants to know everything that is on the table for him before he chooses where to sign. Barkley expressed that he loves the people at ESPN and would do the best he possibly could “if we end up there,” but ostensibly wants less ambiguity surrounding the situation.

“First of all, they haven’t even given us any type of schedule whatsoever, but I’d be doing myself a disservice not to meet with NBC, which I have, and meet with Amazon, which I have,” Barkley said, “and the No. 1 thing – and I’ve told everybody – ‘Can you all please give me a damn schedule?’ because nobody knows anything.”

Barkley emphasized that he wants to know how much he is going to be working before deciding where he will broadcast next season. Furthermore, he stated that he is not going to be contributing to coverage on ESPN, ABC and TNT at the same time. TNT Sports had divulged that it is developing an Inside Sports show for next season that will feature talent from Inside the NBA. The company also reached a five-year extension of its digital partnership with the NBA concurrent with the settlement of a lawsuit.

“If we go to ESPN, I got nothing but love and respect for those guys, but I’m not going to do ABC, ESPN and TNT,” Barkley said, “so I took my time meeting with the other two networks.”

In further discussing the situation, Barkley presented several examples of him stepping up to do extra work for TNT Sports to help the company. He revealed that there was no additional money involved in being part of college basketball coverage, and also conveyed how he started a podcast with Ernie Johnson and took part in The Match.

“I’ve never asked them for an extra dime for doing extra stuff, but we got traded to another network, [so] I want to know exactly what’s going on because, like I say, I’m not going to be doing five shows,” Barkley explained. “I’m not going to be working four days a week on any network, either NBC or Amazon. That’s not going to happen.”

Barkley mentioned that he would potentially be willing to work two days a week, but he emphasized that people would be nuts if they think he will go to three or four days. Patrick, a former SportsCenter anchor at ESPN, said that if he went to the network, he would have to participate in shows such as College GameDay, take part in a radio show and appear on First Take.

“That’s not going to happen, Dan,” Barkley said. “Listen, you have my word on that. I’m not going to be working all the time.”

WPOC Baltimore Names Michael J & Bethany Linderman New Morning Hosts

0

iHeartMedia’s Country 93.1 WPOC in Baltimore has announced that ‘Michael J,’ currently the afternoon host, will step into the morning slot alongside co-host Bethany Linderman.

This change comes following the departure of Laurie DeYoung (BMM 12/17), who has been a fixture in morning radio for 39 years. The new lineup will begin on Monday, January 6.

Michael J has been the afternoon host at WPOC since January 2000. In addition to his role at WPOC, he also handles middays for the sister station, Country 98.7 WMZQ in Washington, D.C., and contributes tracks for various other iHeartMedia Country stations.

Michael J. said, “I finally found a job that lets me wear my pajamas to work. As a Baltimore Boy, to quarterback mornings on THE station I grew up listening to as a kid with my granddad, who was a Country superfan; I’m truly living the dream!”

iHeartMedia Washington/Baltimore Region SVP Programming and WPOC Program Director Jeff Kapugi commented, “Michael was born and raised in Baltimore and has been hosting afternoons on WPOC for 25 years. I am excited to pair him with Bethany in the morning and watch them go. I feel like this new lineup on WPOC has all the right talent in all the right places.”

Jeff St. Pierre, the current morning co-host, will transition to the afternoon slot. St. Pierre has been with the station since 2008, initially starting as a morning show producer before becoming the co-host.

Linderman joined WPOC’s morning show in November 2023. Before this role, she co-hosted mornings at Audacy Hot AC “Mix 106.5” WWMX in Baltimore from 2018 to 2020.

Other stops include morning co-hosting at Townsquare Media Country 107.7 WGNA  Albany, NY, and hosting at “95.7 The Big Pig” WPIG-FM in Olean, NY. Additionally, she worked as a morning producer at 99.5 WQYK in Tampa.

Hubie Brown to Call Final NBA Game February 9 on ABC

0

ESPN has announced that Hubie Brown, the legendary basketball coach and broadcaster, will call his final NBA game on Sunday, February 9, 2025, at 2 p.m. ET. The game will feature the Milwaukee Bucks hosting the Philadelphia 76ers and will air on ABC. Brown began his professional coaching career as an assistant coach for the Milwaukee Bucks in 1972.

Brown, a two-time NBA Coach of the Year, will work with Mike Breen. The two are both Naismith Basketball Hall of Famers and worked together during the NBA Finals in 2006.

In a release, ESPN said, “During the broadcast, ESPN and the NBA will honor and celebrate Brown’s history-making career, which includes 50 years in the NBA and 35 years as a national television and radio analyst. More details about the special broadcast will be announced in the coming weeks.”

Brown, 91, recently suffered a major loss when his 54-year-old son Brendan, also a former coach and broadcaster, died suddenly in November.

After spending two years as an assistant coach for the Bucks, Brown moved over to the ABA as the head coach of the Kentucky Colonels where his team would win the league championship in his first season. In 1976 he came back to the NBA as the head coach of the Atlanta Hawks for five seasons.

After doing some broadcasting, he would return to the bench as head coach of the New York Knicks. Brown’s head coaching career would come to a halt after 16 games into the 1986-87 season. He would next coach in the NBA more than 15 years later when Jerry West brought him to Memphis as the head coach of the Grizzlies at the age of 69. Brown spent parts of three seasons with Memphis and coached his last game at the age of 71.

Brown joined ESPN in in 2004. In addition to the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame, Brown has also been inducted into the College Basketball Hall of Fame, the National Sports Media Hall of Fame and the Sports Broadcasting Hall of Fame.

Doug Gottlieb: ‘My Tone Was Pretty Negative’ Towards Adam Schefter

0

Michael Vick, a four-time Pro Bowl quarterback and NFL analyst for FOX Sports, has reportedly been hired as the head coach of the Norfolk State University football team, according to a report from David Teel and Michael Sauls of The Virginian-Pilot. The newspaper divulged Vick’s interest in the position on Monday while ESPN NFL insider Adam Schefter shared that Vick met with Sacramento State about its head coaching job as well. Within his post, Schefter wrote that the school has more than $50 million in funding for name, image and likeness (NIL), something that caused other reporters to raise objections.

Doug Gottlieb, afternoon host on FOX Sports Radio and head men’s basketball coach at the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay, replied to Schefter’s post by articulating that he should edit what agents tell him. Gottlieb added that there is no chance the school has $50 million in NIL money, a response that prompted Schefter to explain the situation. From there, Schefter shared a photo of the Horizon League standings, asked Gottlieb why his team was in last place and had lost seven straight games and implored the sports radio host to spend “less time on social media and more time in the gym.”

The tweet went viral on social media, and Gottlieb responded to what took place on the Tuesday edition of The Doug Gottlieb Show on FOX Sports Radio.

“I’ve been in plenty of these before,” Gottlieb said. “I think the difference is two or threefold, okay? One is that in the past when you tweet something you don’t like the way it comes out, you just take it down, but somehow we’ve gotten into this ‘screenshot gotcha’ sort of thing where if you take it down, now it’s like, ‘Ooh, we found you tweeting something,’ when you’re allowed to erase something if you’re like, ‘Aah, I wish I would have reworded that.”

Gottlieb admitted that he is not super defensive and may not have been able to recognize potentially incendiary language in his own tweets. After explaining his perspective as a college basketball coach towards NIL, during which he mentioned a pending settlement in House v. NCAA that could presumably lead to schools owing compensation to former students for name, image and likeness, he asked producer Dan Beyer his thoughts on his reply.

“I think it’s more of a group text sort of thing, like, ‘Guys, get a load of this. This is completely off base. None of this is true,’ so I thought the wording of it was a little harsh, even if you were correct in what you were saying,” Beyer explained. “And then the comeback from Schefter because of how you worded it leaves you open to taking that sort of blow with the screenshot, and yeah, and then it just absolutely took off from there.”

Beyer articulated that it was not more important to be right in this case and spoke about how the interaction seemed to be carried on. Furthermore, he stated that it seemed to be the remark about getting information from agents that annoyed Schefter and implied that it may have been better to leave that part out.

“There’s no question because that’s how by and large he gets that information,” Gottlieb said. “The agent [was] probably not involved in this one, but it’s more the point of insiders – and you and I know lots of them, and Schefter’s really good at NFL stuff. Part of it is Schefter trying to say he can do the basketball stuff, which is like, again, if you haven’t been in a business, your ability to understand that business is made really, really difficult – really difficult.”

Gottlieb referenced another NFL insider who obtains information from agents and inflates information to benefit the players. While he did not name the insider, he commended Schefter for doing a much better job in general of stating what is taking place and what is going to happen.

“In that case, he was literally discussing something that either he didn’t have any desire to look into; he might have been doing somebody a favor,” Gottlieb said. “It might have been helping encourage Mike Vick – ‘Here’s why you should take the job. We got $50 million in cash right on hand,’ but it’s not true. And I completely understand my tone was pretty negative there, I got it. I didn’t think I went as personal as he went.”

FOX Sports Talking Broadcast Deal with LIV Golf, Per Report

0

According to a report from the Sports Business Journal, FOX Sports and LIV Golf have had discussions about a potential agreement which would see the tournaments air on the network starting next season. Josh Carpenter said his sources have told him the talks are at a high level but if a rights fee is involved or where exactly the tournaments would air, FOX or FS1, was not yet clear.

For the past two years, LIV events have aired on The CW. There was reportedly a third-year option in that agreement which was not picked up.

LIV Golf kicked off with the 2022 LIV Golf Invitational Series which was streamed live on Facebook and YouTube. In June 2022, the league signed a worldwide deal with video streaming service DAZN with additional deals in specific countries signed later. In January 2023 LIV signed with The CW, which is owned by Nexstar Media Group.

The SBJ report said Scott O’Neil, who is expected to be named the new CEO and commissioner of LIV, has been on site in Las Vegas this week for “The Showdown,” which will feature LIV golfers Brooks Koepka and Bryson DeChambeau against PGA Tour players Rory McIlroy and Scottie Scheffler. Carpenter reported O’Neil was playing in the Pro-Am with CAA head of sports Alan Gold and EVP of business development and media for FOX Sports Jordan Bazant.

Indications are LIV built their schedule around a possible new media deal. This past season ended the third week of September, with the new season schedule to finish in August, before football programming would begin on a network such as FOX.

ESPN ‘Monday Night Football’ Week 15 Doubleheader Games Overlap for Average of 17.8 Million Viewers

0

ESPN Monday Night Football presented a doubleheader of Week 15 games with start times separated by a half-hour that obtained an overlapping audience averaging 17.8 million viewers from 8:30 to 11:15 p.m. EST. The first matchup emanated from U.S. Bank Stadium with the Minnesota Vikings hosting the Chicago Bears at 8 p.m. EST on ABC and ESPN+. The Vikings recognized former wide receiver Randy Moss, who is recovering from surgery last week that removed a cancerous mass in the bile duct “between the pancreas and the liver.” Play-by-play announcer Joe Buck, analyst Troy Aikman and sideline reporter Lisa Salters were on the call for the game.

The second game of the doubleheader took place from Allegiant Stadium with the Atlanta Falcons visiting the Las Vegas Raiders airing on ESPN and ESPN Deportes. This matchup came down to the final possession, during which the Falcons were able to hold on for the 15-9 victory. The overlapping audience for both Monday Night Football games peaked at 19.4 million viewers during the first half of both games within the 9 to 9:15 p.m. EST quarter-hour. Chris Fowler, Louis Riddick, Dan Orlovsky and Laura Rutledge were on the broadcast for the interconference showdown. Individual viewership metrics for both games were not immediately available from Nielsen Media Research.

As outlined in its current media rights agreement with the NFL, The Walt Disney Company airs 23 football matchups during the season, including three weeks with doubleheaders. Throughout the remainder of the regular season, ESPN will be simulcasting Monday Night Football games on the ABC broadcast network, continuing a practice that it exercised last year amid the writers strike in Hollywood. Disney is in the midst of its second season within a 10-year media rights deal that includes broadcasts of the Super Bowl to conclude the 2026 and 2030 seasons.

Broadcasts of Monday Night Football averaged 14.4 million viewers per game through the first half of the season, with data from Nielsen Media Research spanning to Monday, Nov. 4. As of ratings for Week 14 contests, NFL games have accounted for 65 of the top 70 shows on television. ESPN and ABC will broadcast Monday Night Football in Week 16 when the New Orleans Saints visit Lambeau Field to face the Green Bay Packers. ESPN, ABC and ESPN+ will air a Monday night Super Wild Card matchup for the fourth consecutive season and a divisional round playoff game for a second year to conclude the broadcast schedule.
