Chronic Illness Statistics in Tennessee: Implications for Social Security Disability Cases

0

Chronic diseases significantly impact the health and economy of Tennessee, affecting many residents’ quality of life and ability to work. With six in ten adults living with at least one chronic condition, the demand for support through programs like Social Security Disability is pressing. Understanding how chronic illness statistics in Tennessee influence Social Security Disability cases is crucial for those affected.

Navigating the complexities of Social Security Disability claims can be daunting, especially for those dealing with chronic and debilitating illnesses. The Social Security Administration must consider various factors when evaluating applications, including the prevalence and impact of chronic conditions. These statistics provide insight into how chronic diseases affect individuals’ eligibility for disability benefits.

The implications for those seeking Social Security Disability are profound, as chronic illnesses are a leading cause of disability and death in the U.S. Exploring the intersection of chronic illness statistics and disability benefits helps illuminate the challenges faced by applicants in Tennessee, offering a clearer picture of the health outcomes that shape their lives and the support they require.

Overview of Chronic Illnesses in Tennessee

Chronic illnesses significantly impact the health and economy of Tennessee. A wide range of diseases like heart disease, cancer, and diabetes contribute to morbidity and mortality across the state. These health issues increase healthcare spending and affect quality of life.

Prevalence and Types of Chronic Diseases

In Tennessee, chronic diseases are prevalent, with notable conditions including heart disease, diabetes, and cancer. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 6 in 10 adults have at least one chronic condition, while 4 in 10 adults live with two or more. The Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System provides insights into these conditions’ prevalence, highlighting risk factors like tobacco use, physical inactivity, and obesity.

Multiple chronic conditions are common, often leading to complications such as stroke and chronic pain. Health disparities remain a concern, with certain populations experiencing higher incidence rates. Factors like poor nutrition and social determinants of health further exacerbate these issues. Addressing these challenges requires robust chronic disease prevention strategies.

Impact of Chronic Illnesses on Public Health and Economy

Chronic illnesses account for a significant portion of healthcare spending in Tennessee. The annual cost of managing these diseases impacts both personal finances and the state’s economy. Cardiovascular disease and diabetes alone contribute extensively to health care costs.

Public health practice aims to mitigate this burden by focusing on prevention and management strategies. The economic implications are evident as chronic diseases affect workforce productivity and quality of life. Social Security Disability cases often increase due to these health challenges, emphasizing the need for comprehensive public health initiatives to reduce morbidity and mortality rates. Improved management of chronic conditions can lead to better population health and reduced healthcare expenditure.

Navigating Social Security Disability with Chronic Illness

Navigating Social Security Disability (SSD) with chronic illness involves understanding the nuances of eligibility requirements and application procedures. Successfully securing disability benefits provides essential support for those unable to maintain substantial employment.

Understanding Disability Benefits and Eligibility

The Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) program provides financial support to individuals who can no longer work due to chronic illness or significant impairments. Eligibility requires the accumulation of sufficient work credits, which depend on age and duration of work history. Typically, workers need to have contributed to Social Security through payroll taxes.

Chronic illnesses that may qualify include conditions listed in the SSA’s “Blue Book.” These include severe cases of Alzheimer’s disease, effects of alcoholism, or physical impairments from diseases like multiple sclerosis. Medical evidence is crucial for demonstrating how the condition inhibits work capability.

Benefit calculations take into account the worker’s average lifetime earnings prior to becoming disabled. The understanding of these calculations and eligibility specifics is key for those applying for SSDI.

The Application and Appeals Process

Applicants must complete a detailed application process that involves the submission of medical records and work history documentation. The process begins with an initial application, where outcomes of applications for disability benefits are decided based on medical evidence and SSA criteria.

In instances of denial, an administrative appeals process is available. This involves reconsideration, where new evidence or clarification of existing data is presented. If denied again, a hearing before an administrative law judge is the next step. Legal representation can be beneficial during these appeals.

Accuracy and thoroughness in documentation increase the likelihood of a favorable decision. Understanding the various stages and requirements of this process is essential for applicants and their advocates.

Challenges and Considerations for Disabled Workers

Disabled workers face unique challenges when applying for SSDI. Geographic variations can impact access to health care and disease management resources. Social determinants of health, such as economic status and access to care, play a role in both the onset and management of chronic illness.

Work incentives exist to encourage disabled individuals to attempt re-entry into the workforce through trial work periods. However, cash benefits may be affected by these ventures. Additionally, public disability benefits like workers’ compensation might influence SSDI eligibility and benefit calculations.

Navigating SSA regulations concerning drug addiction, alcoholism, cigarette smoking, and excessive alcohol use is vital, as these factors can complicate eligibility. Preparing for benefit termination scenarios is also essential, ensuring ongoing support for those unable to resume employment.

Fox Sports Says Michigan’s Upset of Ohio State Was Year’s 2nd Most-Watched College Football Game of Season

0

Fox Sports said Michigan’s stunning upset of arch-rival Ohio State drew 12.3 million viewers to its Big Noon Saturday broadcast.

Citing estimates from Nielsen, Fox Sports said The Game was the second most-watched college football game of the season, trailing Georgia’s victory over Texas in the SEC in October.

The Michigan-Ohio State game was the most-watched Big Ten game on any network this season, but it drew fewer viewers than last year’s contest, which drew 19.1 million viewers. Last year both Ohio State and Michigan were ranked in the Top 10. Michigan was unranked and a three-touchdown underdog going into this year’s big game.

Michigan has now beat its rival four straight times.

The broadcast ended with a melee as Michigan and Ohio State players fought and law enforcement used pepper spray to try to clear the field.

MSNBC President Rashida Jones Considering Exit Amid Ratings Downturn

0

MSNBC has seen a ratings decline since Election Day, and that has led network President Rashida Jones to consider leaving her post, according to a new report.

Oliver Darcy of Status News shared that Jones is considering leaving MSNBC early next year after the inauguration of Donald Trump.

A spokesperson for Rashida Jones — who took over as President of MSNBC from Phil Griffin in 2021 — has denied that she would look to exit the network after the inauguration.

The news that Jones could consider stepping aside comes as parent company Comcast has announced plans to place MSNBC — along with the company’s other cable channels — in a separate company called SpinCo. Rumors of a potential sale of the channel have persisted, with billionaire Elon Musk continually floating jokes on social media that he’d be interested in purchasing the network. CNN media reporter Brian Stelter has reported a billionaire with “liberal bona fides” is also interested in purchasing MSNBC.

The network is in the midst of a ratings slump, seeing a 50% decline in primetime audience since November 5th. MSNBC has seen an average audience of 661,000 in weeks following the election of Trump. That is down from the 1.34 million it averaged leading up to election day.

Meanwhile, Morning Joe — the morning show hosted by Joe Scarborough and Mika Brzezinski — has seen a 43% decrease in viewership since the pair announced they met with Trump at his Mar-a-Lago home following his election in an effort to repair their relationship.

670 The Score and Chicago Cubs Announce Contract Extensions for Long-Running Broadcast Team Pat Hughes and Ron Coomer

0

The Chicago Cubs and Audacy’s sports radio station 670 The Score officially announced signing new long-term contract extensions with their on-air broadcast team of Pat Hughes and Ron Coomer.

Hughes and Coomer have worked together calling Cubs games for 11 years, including the 108=year curse-busting 2016 season, when the lovable losers turned into World Series champs..

Local outlets reported that Hughes and Coomer would be coming back last month. Hughes and Coomer appeared on the Score’s Mully and Haugh show Wednesday morning to discuss their new contract.

“We join Cubs fans around the world in celebrating having Pat and Ron back next season and beyond,” Mitch Rosen, Vice President and Brand Manager of 670 The Score, said in a statement. “He and Coom make a fantastic team, and they truly are the voices of Spring and Summer in Chicagoland and around the country. It will be extra special to celebrate Pat’s 30th season behind the mic for Cubs baseball in 2025.”

Hughes will be marking his 30th season as the radio voice of the Cubs next spring. He was inducted into the Nation Baseball Hall of Fame in 2023, earning the Ford C. Frick Award.

Coomer was a one-time All-Star who played for the Cubs in 2001 before becoming a broadcaster.

“Pat and Ron have been with our fans for many of the most memorable moments in Cubs history,” said Cubs Chief Commercial Officer Colin Faulkner. “Their voices are synonymous with Cubs baseball and the voices of our summer. We are thrilled they will continue to bring their passion and expertise to our fans for years to come.”

Kevin Kisner Named Lead Golf Analyst for NBC Sports

0

Four-time PGA TOUR winner Kevin Kisner has been named the lead analyst for golf coverage on NBC Sports, succeeding Paul Azinger in the role after he departed the company following the expiration of his contract. Under his new role, he will work with play-by-play announcer Dan Hicks for presentations of PGA TOUR events and major championships broadcast by the network. Some of these men’s golf events include the U.S. Open, the Open Championship, the FedExCup Playoffs, the Ryder Cup and the PLAYERS Championship.

“Kevin always shared frank and honest opinions about the game of golf during our various conversations through the years,” Tommy Roy, lead golf producer for NBC Sports, said in a statement. “Those kinds of opinions and his engaging personality make Kiz a great fit for our broadcast team. He knows these players, he knows this game, and the audience will get to hear more of those opinions and that personality this season.”

Although Kisner will be giving analysis for several key properties within the PGA TOUR, he will also maintain a limited playing schedule for competitions within the organization as well. Kisner most recently won the Wyndham Championship in 2021 and served as a captain’s assistant at this year’s iteration of the Presidents Cup in Montréal, Québec. Earlier this year, he made his debut as an analyst on NBC Sports coverage of the PGA TOUR, commentating events such as the WM Phoenix Open, The PLAYERS and the FedExCup Playoffs. Kisner worked with Smylie Kaufman for Happy Hour coverage as these events were taking place as well.

“I’m humbled and grateful to have the chance to sit in the seat that many legends like Johnny Miller and Paul Azinger have sat in before me on NBC,” Kisner said in a statement. “I’m looking forward to offering a different voice and adding a new dynamic to the broadcasts, hopefully reaching more fans and telling things like it is. That’s what I think I do best. I’m also excited to continue to compete on the PGA TOUR amongst my peers, which I think will help me to tap into what these guys are really feeling on the course.”

Earlier in the day, Sports Business Journal reported that Kisner’s role will only focus on weekend coverage from NBC. The company is also reportedly expected to continue utilizing two play-by-play announcers and two analysts rotating holes at major events. This rotation is expected to include returning commentators Brad Faxon, Curt Byrum, Terry Gannon, Steve Sands and the aforementioned Kaufman.

News Media Reacts to NBC News Report on Former Fox News Host Pete Hegseth And Alcohol Abuse Allegations

0

On Tuesday, NBC News released a report that former Fox News host Pete Hegseth drank alcohol in ways that “concerned his co-workers.” Those co-workers responded in droves backing the Defense Secretary nominee.

The NBC News report claimed that 10 current and former Fox News employees spoke on the record about the allegations. Two of those reached say on more than a dozen occasions they could smell alcohol on the breath of Pete Hegseth before he went on the air. The report came on the heels of additional dispatches from The New Yorker that claimed drinking by Hegseth was an issue at two previous jobs he held before joining Fox News in 2017.

Others said they felt the need to “babysit” Hegseth during his time at Fox News. No one, however, could remember a time Pete Hegseth missed a scheduled appearance on the network due to his drinking.

After the report came to light, several former and current Fox News hosts took to social media to share their support for Hegseth, openly questioning the reporting from NBC News.

FOX & Friends Weekend host Will Cain — who worked alongside Hegseth on the weekend morning show — strongly pushed back on the allegations, sharing that he was never contacted by NBC News to share his insights.

“Your story is (expletive) NBC News,” Cain wrote. “Put my name on it. On the record. It’ll be your only on the record source. Signed, the guy who sat next to him for 8 hours every week for five years starting at 6 AM.”

“I was not contacted by anyone at NBC News,” Cain continued. “And no one had closer proximity on a continuous basis. Well…maybe Rachel Campos-Duffy since she sat between us!”

“The losers at NBC News never reached out to me either,” Campos-Duffy said. “Will Cain is right – your story IS (expletive). You now have 2 people who sat next to him 8+ hours a week on the record. Will you retract or correct your story?”

She continued by adding that NBC News “used anonymous sources” and “unconfirmed stories to smear Pete Hegseth as a drunk on the djob and never once asked his FOX & Friends coworkers who sit right next to him?”

“I’ve co-hosted with Pete and have never experienced anything like what was claimed in this anonymously sourced report,” said Fox News host Guy Benson.

“Worked with Pete for years,” added former Fox News host Dan Bongino. “This is absolute (expletive).”

“I don’t drink. I’m disgusted by the smell of alcohol on someone’s breath,” wrote Fox News contributor Johnny Joey Jones. “I’ve never EVER seen Pete drink like that, and have never smelled alcohol on his breath at work. These hit pieces are getting laughable.

“Pete has always been the epitome of a class act and a great guy. These attacks are shameful BS,” added OutKick host Tomi Lahren.

On Wednesday morning, amid reports that Hegseth may no longer have the support of enough Senate Republicans for confirmation, the former Fox News host revealed he had been informed by President-elect Donald Trump to “keep going, keep fighting” as if he will be confirmed.

Ryan Leaf to Host ‘The Last Mile Radio’ on SiriusXM

0

When Ryan Leaf retired from the NFL, he was struggling to combat substance abuse and was eventually incarcerated for burglary and drug offenses in 2012. The Montana Department of Corrections sentenced him to seven years in custody, and two of those years would be suspended if he adhered to certain conditions. Leaf did not need to serve an additional sentence for violating Texas probation when he committed the aforementioned crime in Montana, and he was released from prison in 2014.

Since that time, he has traveled around the country to discuss his experiences and stigmas that are associated with mental health and substance abuse that prevent other people from seeking care. Leaf also serves as the president and chief executive officer of RAM Consultant, Inc. and is an NFL game analyst for Westwood One Sports.

Leaf will be starting a new role as the host of The Last Mile Radio on SiriusXM, a program that looks to promulgate voices who shape the U.S. Justice system. This show shares potent stories and covers topics such as substance use recovery, prison reform and emotional literacy. The program had previously been hosted by co-founder Chris Redlitz and musician/audio producer Eric Abercrombie. New episodes of the show premiere on Saturdays at 12 p.m. EST, and replays of the program air on Sunday at 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. EST.

“For someone like me, who’s been at the bottom, The Last Mile Radio means everything,” Leaf said in a statement. “It’s not just about telling stories – it’s about building bridges and showing what’s possible when we invest in people’s potential, not their past. This show and its relationship with SiriusXM is a testament to what happens when voices from inside the system are finally heard. It’s a privilege to amplify those stories and inspire listeners to see the humanity in everyone.”

Leaf has previous experience working in the sports media business, serving as the host of the eponymous podcast, The Straight Line with Ryan Leaf. Prior to the start of the Pac-12 Conference season in college football, he was named a game analyst for The CW. Throughout the game schedule, he worked with play-by-play announcer Ted Robinson and sideline reporter Nigel Burton to bring fans the latest action from around the country. Leaf, a former quarterback at Washington State University, previously worked as a college football analyst for ESPN and has also appeared on the NFL Network morning show, Good Morning Football.

“SiriusXM is proud of the strong relationship we have built with The Last Mile, and the success of TLM Radio over the last year,” Scott Greenstein, president and chief content officer of SiriusXM, said in a statement. “With the addition of Ryan as the new host, the show will only continue to grow, focusing on important topics impacting today’s society, including criminal justice reform, mental health, and incredible stories of transformation.”

The Last Mile was founded in 2010 and looks to provide opportunities to justice-impacted individuals for personal and professional growth. The Oakland-based organization is currently in eight states and 16 facilities, having served 1,200 students and more than 700 returned citizens. Listeners can access The Last Mile Radio through their SiriusXM subscriptions on a variety of platforms, and the outlet is also included with the company’s audio trials and plans.

“We are excited to welcome Ryan Leaf as the host of The Last Mile Radio on SiriusXM,” Kevin McCracken, executive director of The Last Mile, said in a statement. “The show aims to inspire listeners with stories focused on social impact, a mission we have long admired in Ryan’s community engagements over the years. Building on the momentum generated since the show launched in 2023, Ryan will continue to engage with changemakers who are committed to shifting the status quo.”

ESPN Tile Added to Disney+ App, Bringing Sports to More Streamers

0

The Walt Disney Co. said it added an ESPN tile to the Disney+ app, making sports content more easily accessible to more viewers via streaming.

Consumers who subscribe to a Disney Bundle–Disney+, Hulu and ESPN+–will be able to access all ESPN+ content, including live games, without leaving the Disney+ app starting December 4.  Customers who only subscribe to Disney+ will be able to watch a selection of ESPN+ programming. Available content includes the The Simpsons Funday Football animated Monday Night Football game, five NBA contests on Christmas Day, the Dunk The Halls animated NBA presentation and day-one golf coverage from the Australian Open.

The move is part of Disney’s strategy to make Disney+ into a single, seamless source for programming of all genres for the entire family.

It is also part of ESPN’s plan to give sports fans everything they want, wherever they want it. The move comes ahead of next fall’s launch of ESPN Flagship, which will offer all of the programming currently available to cable subscribers via streaming. (Once flagship launches, subscribers will be able to access ESPN content via the ESPN app and through the Disney tile on Disney+.)

“This is the next step in both the evolution of Disney plus, and also ESPN streaming future,” said Alisa Bowen, president of Disney+, during a Zoom conference call with reporters.

“This launch really highlights Disney as the preeminent, global storyteller that can bring together entertainment and Sports in a truly unique way like no other streamer,” Bowen said.

Disney+ users will find ESPN+ content in the carousel at the top of the app. Under the ESPN tile, live and upcoming programming is emphasized. Viewers will be able to find content by sport or team. ESPN+ content will be included in search results and intermixed in categories such as “bingeable series,” “recommended for you” and “recently watched.”

Standalone Disney+ consumers who try to access content available only to ESPN+ subscribers will be offered the opportunity to upgrade their subscription.

Brian Marshall, VP, sports, product management, said Disney has been working hard to seamlessly blend entertainment and sports in one app. Which should create a stickier, more user-friendly experience.

“It’s all part of ESPN’s strategy to serve sports fans of all kinds–new or established, casual or die hard–wherever they want to watch, read and or listen to sports,” Marshall said.

Disney will be able to dynamically insert commercials into live games available to Disney+ subscribers, giving advertisers more reach and scale. Stand alone subscribers to the ad-free version of Disney+ will not see ads in the ESPN+  studio shows and library content available to them.

“We already utilize our proprietary ad technology to deliver data-informed and targeted advertising in Disney+ content,” Marshall said. “Now we’re adding the ability to deliver dynamic ad insertion into live content at scale, right in Disney+.”

Hulu Too

At the same time Disney is bringing ESPN+ content to  Disney+, it is also making selected Hulu content available to standalone Disney+.subscribers. The content includes the hit Shogun, the series Will Trent and Reservation Dogs, as well as movies such as Dawn of the Planet of the Apes.

The content available to stand alone Disney+ subscribers from Hulu and ESPN+ will be rotated to provide fresh content monthly.

A Hulu tile was added to Disney+ in March and Bowen said the move has proved successful.

“It’s driven deeper engagement with our content and better retention and showcases the value of our bundle offering. In fact, 40% of the entitled subscribers are engaging with Hulu content on Disney+ every month,” she said.

Having Hulu and ESPN+ content available to standalone Disney+ subscribers  will allow them to sample the breadth of the content available across our streaming services, and if they choose a course, they can easily update their subscription to a bundle entitlement,” Bowen said.

The Joe Rogan Experience Earns Top Podcast Spot in 2024 Spotify Wrapped

0

Spotify has released its 2024 Spotify Wrapped rankings. To no surprise, The Joe Rogan Experience was listed as the most popular program of the year.

In the top video podcasts in the U.S., The Joe Rogan Experience eclipsed Call Her Daddy and the Lex Fridman Podcast for the top spot.

While already the most popular program in the space, the show hosted by Joe Rogan also saw gigantic audiences after featuring conversations with Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump, and his running mate Sen. JD Vance (R-OH) in a separate episode.

The news that Rogan remains the top podcast on the streaming platform comes after he inked a new deal with the company that added wider distribution to his contract. Previously, the program was only available on the Spotify app. However, Rogan’s show is now available on all major podcast platforms. The video simulcast is also available on YouTube and Rumble.

According to Spotify, 2024 featured a 50% increase in those publishing video podcasts on the platform. In total, there are now more than 300,000 video podcasts available on the platform.

“When you look at some of the best video podcasts, you can see that they don’t always have the most sophisticated and manicured set,” Spotify Head of Content Partnerships Jordan Newman told Yahoo Entertainment. “You can do something that feels really raw and authentic, and that’s what podcasting is all about. I think the barriers for entry are pretty low.”

Joining The Joe Rogan Experience in the Top 50 Podcasts in the US, according to Spotify, were other news media shows like The Daily (#5), The Tucker Carlson Show (#6), The Shawn Ryan Show (#10), Up First from NPR (#11), The Journal (#13), NPR News Now (#27), and The Ben Shapiro Show (#35).
