Jeff Fisher is reportedly considering a return to the NFL, but according to Michael McCarthy of The Sporting News the former Titans and Rams coach will not be headed to a sideline. Fisher is reportedly in talks with Fox to join the network’s NFL coverage.
McCarthy says that Fisher has a high enough profile and enough name recognition to take on a major role.
Fisher has said he wants another NFL coaching job. But Fox has the money to pay for a big name as its devotes major resources to “Thursday Night Football” and its Sunday afternoon game of the week, the most-watched program in all of TV. According to SportsBusiness Daily, Fox will pay the NFL around $550 million per year through 2022 to broadcast “Thursday Night Football.”
A role at Fox, and a high profile one at that, seems like a pretty good landing spot. The sidelines may be desirable to Fisher, but how desirable Fisher is to the NFL is up for debate. Remember, this guy earned the nickname “Seven Nine” from ESPN’s Bomani Jones, because of Fisher’s penchant for finishing just below .500. He also has more regular season losses than anyone else in league history.
