In the annals of Paul Finebaum lore, the name “Millie from Rola” isn’t up there with “Phyllis from Mulga” or “Tammy from Clanton,” but last week Millie acme the center of the show’s universe. She called in to talk about the Alabama Crimson Tide and told guest host Peter Burns that while she was a lifelong fan, she had never been to a game at Bryant-Denny Stadium.
This admission first led to mocking from other Finebaum callers and then to Burns deciding he had to get Millie to a game. Burns secured tickets to Alabama’s 24-0 shutout of #16 Mississippi State himself. His fellow SEC Network personality and former Bama offensive lineman Barrett Jones secured a parking pass for Millie. To round out the package, regular Finebaum caller Captain Jack volunteered to show Millie around Tuscaloosa and the Alabama campus.
She called The Paul Finebaum Show on Monday to thank everyone involved. She called Saturday “the most fabulous experience I’ve ever had in my life.”
According to Peter Burns, more than 100 Finebaum listeners reached out to him on Twitter to help Millie get to Bryant-Denny Stadium. “To see how much it meant to Millie really made me realize how lucky we are to do this for a living,” Burns said in an interview with ESPN Front Row. “We often take our jobs in sports for granted, so to be able to see it through someone else’s eyes truly put everything into perspective about how we really do have the best jobs in the world.”
