According to a report in the Sports Business Journal, NASCAR is considering launching an over the top streaming service. The service would be missing live race coverage though, as the sport’s streaming rights are currently locked up with Fox and NBC. SBJ reports that the service could launch as early as 2020.
Any NASCAR owned streaming service would be unable to show live races from the sport’s top three divisions until 2025. So what would the content be?
It could show everything from lower-level forms of racing to archived events and NASCAR/motorsports lifestyle content. It is unknown whether the network could show highlights after races air on Fox and NBC channels.
Andrew Bucholtz of Awful Announcing notes that in addition to a lack of live races, the service would also be dealing with a demographics problem. The sport’s average fan is 58 years old, making it the third oldest fanbase after men’s tennis and golf. The average age of fans has jumped by 9 years since 2006. It seems unlikely that demographic would be eager to consume streaming content.
