Mack Brown Leaving ESPN for UNC

ESPN’s Mack Brown is leaving the broadcast booth and returning to the college football sidelines. 247 Sports is reporting that Brown has reached an agreement with the University of North Carolina to become the school’s next football coach., and has already begun recruiting assistants. One of his targets may be ESPN colleague Gene Chizik.

Todd Luginbill was the first national media figure to say this would happen. He was on air on SiriusXM’s ESPNU Radio on Sunday when the news broke that the Tar Heels would part ways with current head football coach Larry Fedora. Luginbill did not mince words on what he expected to happen next.

A deal could be announced as early as Tuesday. This will be something of a homecoming for Brown, who is 67-years-old. He served as UNC’s football coach from 1988-1997 before leaving for the University of Texas, where he won a national championship in 2005.

If Chizik gives up his role at SEC Network to join Brown, that too would be a homecoming scenario. Chizik was UNC’s defensive coordinator in 2015 and 2016.
