Gennady Golovkin, better known as “Triple G” to boxing fans, is a free agent now that HBO has gotten out of the boxing business. His exclusive contract officially ended with his September 15 loss to Canelo Alvarez. ESPN’s Dan Rafael reports that it is down to his network or over-the-top streaming service DAZN to be Triple G’s future home.
Offers have been made by both sides to Golovkin’s promoter Tom Loeffler. Loeffler says that he and his client will discuss their options, but ultimately it will be Triple G’s call.
“Gennady will make a decision this year on the direction he wants to go in,” Loeffler said. “I’m going to give him the pros and cons of each offer and he is the one who will make the final decision.”
DAZN is heavily invested in combat sports, particularly boxing. It signed an eleven fight, five year deal with Alvarez earlier this year that will see that fighter make $365 million. If there is going to be a Triple G/Alvarez 3, you can bet DAZN would love to be its exclusive home.
ESPN isn’t slouching in a commitment to boxing either. It became the exclusive home of Top Rank events earlier this year when HBO gave up the contract. While a decent amount of that content has shown up on television, the network is also using it as a selling point of its own over-the-top streaming service, ESPN+.
