MASN will have to completely overhaul its pre- and post game coverage of the Washington Nationals. Just one month after the network announced that it would not renew Ray Knight’s contract, his partner on those broadcasts, Johnny Holliday has decided he is not coming back either.
Barry Svrluga of The Washington Post says it was travel commitments that made the job so hard for Holliday. His home is very close to Nationals Park, which is where home game broadcasts were set. When the team was on the road though, Holliday and Knight would broadcast from a studio in suburban Baltimore. The commute got to be too much for him.
Holliday also told Svrluga in an email that the show is at a natural transition point. “With Ray gone, seems like a good time to back off a little.”
Johnny Holliday is 81-years-old. This is not a full retirement from broadcasting. He intends to continue calling play-by-play for the Maryland Terrapins football and men’s basketball teams.
